Finally got around to firing up Shadow to finish off the nu Raider games. Its pretty much the same as the other two games with little innovation, though these days you can say that about most game series and sequels. The problem with these games is the gameplay loop isn't really all that compelling so they are rehashing the same mediocre shit for the third game in a row.

I'm maybe 1/3 of the way in and the story and characters are laughably bad and in places grating to the point you want to turn the game off. The first game was god awful in this regard, Rise toned it down a bit and seemingly Shadow went off a fucking cliff and the writers just gave up.

I will give the game its dues - it does look pretty nice. Its a shame the graphics aren't in service of a better game.

The writing in the trilogy and the 2018 movie just screams Tommy Wiseau levels of writing. Melodramatic to a point where it feels more like a Saturday Morning cartoon, and CW-levels of acting from the characters to the point where writers force you to feel the characters. Sure, they are laughably bad, but they're also very insulting that at times it feels more like a satire on bad dark, gritty reboots.

Having watched the 2018 movie just to jog my memory, I can say that in terms of Tomb Raider adaptions, this was easily the bottom of the barrel. Even with how ridiculous Cradle of Life got, there was still enough to make it memorable. All I remember about 2018 was the camerawork in the night scenes being godawful.

It's easily the second worst video game based movie ever (only losing to Doom Annihilation), and the people who defended this pigshit and calls it "that one who broke the video game movie curse" are a bunch of retards that have no taste. It makes Legend of Chun-Li look like The Shawshank Redemption, I am not kidding. I've seen a lot of fan films and even pornos that have better cinematography, effects and even writing and acting than big budget movies like this.

I'm always glad the sequel to this will never get made once MGM lost the rights. It's a prime example of how studios have film rights for god knows how long just to make it half-assed at the last minute before rights expired.

A few weeks late, but it turns out the new games are coming out for the Switch in addition, so there is some good news.

9 days ago, this trailer drops for a mod that revamps Tomb Raider with Croft Engine

This looks fucking rad. Love the shadow effects.

I dug out my Playstation a couple months back and started blasting through the first five games. I say "blasting through" - I mean "getting my arse handed to me on a silver platter because I haven't played a TR game since 2000". My favourite part of the games is the silence as you explore, just taking in the surroundings and taking your time, and when you hear a little music sting you think "Oh shit" in either wonder that you've discovered a secret, or dread because OH FUCK THAT'S A TIGER COMING RIGHT AT ME JUMP SHOOT JUMP SHOOT.

I remember watching my friend play through Tomb Raider 2013 and thinking it was more like "Lara Croft's Series of Unfortunate Quicktime Events". Shame really, but I guess that's the reason my older consoles still see the most use.

EDIT: Spelling FFS

Don't forget to pick up Legend and Anniversary.

I just watched it too. Fell asleep mid way but woke up around the later half and it pisses me off that they removed the supernatural element of the spooky japanese queen and changed it into a lame zombie virus. Even the Angelina Jolie movies had weird magical elements, I don't know why this new movie shied away from that. Some sprinkles of campy ancient magic would've made it less dull. The decision to remove the cliché stereotype cast was also baffling because as tropey as the 1st reboot game was at least their character beats kind of worked. The only pro in this movie was that Lara has an appropriate amount of fitness and muscle mass on her.

That and some shots felt very clunky. Like straight-to-TV-movie clunky.

It's like watching a bad Syfy Original Movie. I'm very curious as to what the filmmakers actually did with the $95 million budget aside from the awful on-the-nose Volvo product placement, which made me pissed off.

They made this awkward decision because they want to please the Chinese audience. Remember, 2016 female-driven Ghostbusters (despite also trying to please Chinese audiences) was banned for supernatural shit (which was literally the point of the Ghostbusters franchise).

The decision of removing the supernatural elements in Tomb Raider makes as much sense as removing the trademark fighting noise in Legend of Chun-Li. Face it, if Legend of Chun-Li was released a decade later, then the critical and commercial reception would never be as harsh.

Jesus, why I the only person in this earth who has to keep track with updates? Am I still the last one left? Can someone please really keep track with this thread?

Anyway, here's the reveal six days ago:

>Tomb Raider is being developed with Unreal Engine 5.
Why are people still adding UE5 as a selling point when it's literally no different from UE4?

Because it's Tencent-owned. In this day and age, people have to simp for China.

There is probably a clause in the contract for using UE5 where they have to stress that. Its a great selling point for the engine. And honestly, the engine itself looks good.

Shit as Tomb Raider 2018 was, Alicia Vikander got fucking ripped to play her, that I will admit. It just sucks that they didn't stick to the game story at all.

its like they mashed the 2 plots of the games together, changed them moderately so they arent too much like the source material, and still make it feel like generic action adventure movie

It's written more like a shitty SonAmy fanction than an actual movie. It feels more like a satire of a bad, generic movie, and even then it's a bad satire.
