Yeah the astronaut who wasn't Buzz Aldrin, Race Banyon, was even asking over the radio for "permission to sedate cargo ahead of schedule". Homer was just a prop they were hauling up there for ratings, he was going to show up on camera for a few minutes then they would have knocked him out, probably with a shoe to the head because for some reason that kept working, for the rest of the mission. Of course they didn't sedate him long enough and didn't realize that Homer had smuggled a bag of ruffled potato chips onboard....
Also I did the math for how much it would have cost to send Homer into space. I found two amounts for how much it cost to put pay load into space, either $10,000 per pound, or $18,500 per kilogram. Homer weighs 239 pounds so 239 x 10,000= $2,390,000. If we go by kilograms then Homer weighs 108.4 kilograms which means he would cost $2,005,400. NASA would have spent at least two million dollars putting Homer into space for their publicity stunt in addition to whatever it cost to train him and whatever they spent on the ant farm he destroyed.
