RIP FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE GAME. Gonna miss chasing around counselors that troll me while I rage as Jason.

Shame a relatively promising game got caught up so much in intellectual property disputes.
Wasnt there some moderation problems going on awhile ago. I remember the story of some guy that swore at a group of kids who were like 12 or something, the guy got banned but supposedly the dev team knew the under aged people and let them remain playing. Supposedly someone had recording of the incident but was never made public, weird stuff.

Game was a cool concept though.

Here's what I can understand about the legal licensing issues involving Friday the 13th. Director Sean Cunningham said that original screenwriter Victor Miller wrote the first film as a "work-for-hire," while Miller argued that copyright law would have the franchise's rights be reclaimed to him again.

The termination of those rights would go into effect around 2018. Gun Media knew of this, and wanted to release as much content as possible before the franchise would go in legal limbo. Miller won the rights back, but too much time has passed since nobody could make any money off the franchise.

Now, what I don't get is that on July of 2018, a few months before Miller won, Gun Media managed to release a limited collector's edition (and Switch port) of Friday the 13th: The Game. How was that allowed?

My sister in law adored the game and would play it constantly so I got to see it fall apart in real time. I remember there where huge plans and like just a few weeks before they where going to implement jason x and a gaint ship level completely different from anything in the game the rights shit happened and killed all hope for it. She's gotten over it but has that extreme simmering disappointment that i know to well from all dead games I used to love.

Could never really get into this game, never liked how playing as Jason was decided at random and the counselor models looked horrendous. Still, the idea of the game was promising. Another casualty of draconian copyright crap. If the fans have any sense, they should try to reverse-engineer the netcode and create server tools that anyone can use

Making such tools can get you sued, unfortunately.

And the rights holders in this case seem fairly litigious.

Fans actually tried to bring back the game called "Friday 13th Reborn" as means to play it, but got a C&D message right away and told to quit it.

The mistake any project makes that wants to either be a fangame or do something dubious like preserve copyrighted material is to go public about it. They all want clout, a patreon paycheck and all the asspats taht come along with it.

Make the thing, dump it on the internet anonymously, peace out. If its already released they can't close pandora's box.

God, I knew I should have went back to this game. I used to love it but could never get others to play it.

"we here at Friday the 13th corporation hate the idea that new fans might be exposed to our property, and we want to ensure the failure of our brand the second the last retarded 80s slasher fan dies, we haven't even considered reaching a different audience or god forbid a NEW one."

Got this on a sale a year ago but never played it once. I guess I never will and I won't get my money back.
I sure am glad physical media is going away and everything is on the cloud now.

Evolve, a 2K game "developed behind the guys from Left 4 Dead," had similar asymmetrical gameplay involving one monster and five hunters. That tanked, but this one had a cult following. How? Was it the license?
