Avoiding prior posts but this kind of needs to go here. Because a Netflix series in 2023 got to use this dialogue.

Kuina "You'll surpass me in size, strength and speed. Eventually you'll surpass me in everything. That's nature. I'm small now and fast. But soon all the boys will get taller and stronger. Their arms will be longer than mine. Don't you get it? Girls can beat boys but no woman can beat a man."

Now technically that monologue was interrupted at times. But never contradicted.
This is how you know someone (most likely Oda) had intervened and told Netflix "No, it's supposed to go like this." The stuff about breasts clearly wasn't acceptable to Netflix, but what they replaced it with in Kuina's monologue hasn't changed what she was talking about.

It pretty much is a "trans women do not belong in women's sports" rant. It's not meant that way, hell the original scene is over a decade before the topic was being discussed. But it is one of those to even the most generous of readings.

I'm fine with them dropping the breasts thing, contextually it was a young teenager reaching out to another that they are quite close to and saying "puberty sucks, right?" That is still an awkward scene on a rewatch and live action was a hell no. But what remains still boils down to one gender having an advantage over another when it comes to physical matters. And I was certain they'd skip it because it goes so close to a hot button topic that I was positive Netflix would decide to find a way to pass it on by. Instead we got something that makes me honestly astounded it made it to the final production.

So Mr Morj, of Raid Fail fame, had a video up the other week about how Imu has a serpent fruit. And that got me thinking.

As I’ve said I think Imu was Joy Boy. There’s no way Lili would go along with the 20 Kings, allow them to win, allow history to be written diwn and then paw them all over the world. I think whatever happened WG was good and only after did something change. But what?

Well, it’s speculated Imu is immortal and Doffy says you basically need to be to rule.

So at some point Imu or Joy Boy had to be dying.

And then i realised we know 3 things about Fruits. You can’t swim, you get powers and if you eat two the devils fight for control and you explode or die.

I think Imu ate a second fruit and it won out.

And because Thriller Bark has so many connections to things, I think Imu is a shadow in search of a body.

Apparently Tumblr did this to my dash.

As a rule, I don't expect much from adaptions of video games/anime/etc because they're usually bad, and even the ones I kind of enjoyed usually stray pretty wildly from the source material. This is...actually pretty ok so far, but maybe that's because my expectations were lower than low. The Luffy actor isn't really what I had in mind, but he's got sort of a sweet charm to him, and even though the scenes with Cody and Garp grinded the show to a halt at times, I liked the dynamic between the actors.

It's Netflix though, so it's definitely getting cancelled.

Just finished the Kuro Arc

No Jango, Merry actually died and Sham's kind of hot; this arc is ruined.

Kuro's 'reveal' scene is fucking hilarious. Without much prompt or reason, he just starts doing his after image dancing around Merry and Merry's just utterly confused. "What the shit, Khlahadore?"

Arlong looks terrible. Dear god.

Zorro's fight scenes are much better than Luffy's, this show has nowhere near enough energy or speed to sell Luffy's attacks. Helps that Zorro's fight here actually had some back and forth choreograhy-wise, while Luffy's fight is 90% standing about and waiting to punch Kuro once.

I'm liking Koby/Hermano/Garp's side plot so far, though I'd prefer to see more of the intense training they got in the anime.

Finished the Baratie episodes.
Sanji, Zeff, and their relationship was good. The relationships and camaraderie may be the strongest points in this series.
Nami's finally cutting loose. Her trying to hold back is great.
Good on Mihawk as well.
Wasn't sure about revealing Garp as Luffy's grandpa this early, but it did tie into Nami's choices, so...OK.
Don Krieg getting shafted is unfortunate. He was done well.
Not sure about having them fight Arlong and his gang this early. It does set up Arlong as the big threat, but I don't get that great "Which one's Arlong?" bit.
How Arlong Park is handled is gonna really depend on whether these changes fully work.
Chew is a recovering meth addict, please support him.
One more to go.

I am glad they got to use the direct dialogue but in retrospect Kunia is a fucking loser looking for an excuse for when she loses.

Big Fucking Mom's existence nukes her entire argument. Kunia wasn't gonna lose to Zoro eventually because he is a guy..she was gonna lose because She doesn't have the drive that he does so she would never be able to use Haki.

AND FUCKING USOPP CAN GOD DAMN USE HAKI MOTHERFUCKING USOPP CAN USE HAKI, Kunia has no god damn excuse for being a crybaby.

Sorry, that bit drives me insane these days given the amount of Chicks in the series that are legitimately powerful. Big Mom, Yamato, Ulti, Boa Hancock, Carrot.

Alright, finished.
There were a lot of ways for Arlong Park to go. I was expecting the worst.
I was not expecting it to pull it off as well as it did. Did it surpass the anime or manga version? probably not, could they have done stuff better? sure, but they hit it. At the least, I'm interested in Alabasta.
The practical effects of Arlong flipping a house were great.
Zoro and Sanji banter is good.
The Zeff and Garp stuff was really cool.
Buggy is still the GOAT.
Hachi is missed.
Gum Gum Axe was pretty litty my dood.
The Sanji hug bit was a legit chuckle.
Arlong literally pulled a "Whata you mean "You People?". That's amazing.
Nami calling Bellemere hit me right in the kokoro.
"You're a wanted man." "That's exactly what I wanted!" Eyyyyy.
SMOKER, YOU SON OF A BITCH.
I'm gonna collect my overall later, but I love the heart of this series. That alone puts it over most anime adaptations.
Now, I'm gonna watch it again in Japanese like a proper weeb.

Lucci vs Zoro could be fun. I don;t know about Luffy/Kizaru. For all the "we're 100x stronger" Kizaru still walked multiple crews on his own back then without any indication of effort. I don't want to see the danger admirals pose undermined but I am curious to see how Oda does it this time round. Kizaru should not be spanking Luffy as easily as he did Sentomaru.
Well, we are reaching endgame, so admirals need to start seeming approachable. I imagine they will end up in a technical tie since I don't expect Luffy to stomp Kisaru not the other way around. What I'm more intrigued by is the World Government dude near the whole ordeal, I could definitely see him jumping into the fray and being the first World Government guy to be taken down.
EDIT: They're showing Coby and Helmeppo undergoing their timeskip character arcs during the show as well, which is also weird. They turned Coby into a twink as well lol.
Well, not even a twink seeing how the actor is a pooner.

Definitely Oda. No way in fucking hell that in current year + 7 something so honest about gender differences would ever make it into any western media without somebody pushing hard for it.

That's true but I'm not sure if that was happened more because it was the early years of the manga. I'm not certain if Oda really had exactly what was going to happen planned in full so the more pessimistic idea of Kunia's sex limiting her ability eventually makes sense

One Piece is kind of a low info setting. The average person in East Blue has no idea Haki exists. Or that even without Haki humans can learn martial arts that will let them fly, manipulate water, punch holes in steel and block bullets. Devil fruits are poorly understood, cyborgs are unheard of and it's believable Kunia thinks there is a physical cap on her capabilities. Zoro however is a moron then and considers the lack of evidence that he can't manifest multiple additional limbs and faces as some sort of deity of war not to be proof that it's impossible. Kunia's smarter and went off the evidence she had based off the world she knew, not realising that once you get outside of your own island things get kind of crazy. Him inspiring Kunia to continue on trying to get better likely means she would have been a similar scale to him had she survived.

But mostly I do think it's Oda not having a truly clear path back then.

Holy shit, Kuina's just there to set up the Zoro/Tashigi dynamic. Settle the fuck down.

Big Mom is a literal freak of nature. The exception does not disprove the rule.

That being said all the powerful women you listed got bodied by the male characters without thrm even trying. And the one that has not wishes Luffy would body her.

And Big Mom lost to Kidd.

But despite all that, it is an excuse. That’s straight up why Zoro gets mad at her for saying it. Because even if it’s true, Zoro does not accept it.

It’s why I’m expecting her to come back to beat Zoro one more time before the series is over at the rate Oda is going with not killing characters.

And Big Mom lost to Kidd.
Kidd and Lawl

but they got lucky considering they could their environment and Big Mom's idiocy & arrogance to their advantage

once those factors went away in their next fight with an emperor of the sea they were screwed

Just finished the Kuro Arc

Kuro's 'reveal' scene is fucking hilarious. Without much prompt or reason, he just starts doing his after image dancing around Merry and Merry's just utterly confused. "What the shit, Khlahadore?"
Lol, I also thought the same thing. From the POV of the viewer it's literally doing a memberberry with Kuro zipping around, but form Merry's POV; for some reason the Butler has started teleporting. While also wordlessly making smug faces at him. Merry doesn't even seem all that threatened, he's just like "Okay, cool. Anyway I'm going to go now."

Well, not even a twink seeing how the actor is a pooner.
I did think that Coby looked intensely feminine for a dude. Coby wasn't that feminine in the manga; he had a massive square head; and post timeskip became a chad. Weird that they cast a 'dooooood' in the role.

they were screwed
That’s only because Oda did not allow them to Awaken, and then Awaken again and then Awaken again. Had they not been nerfed, Blackbeard and Shanks would have been screwed. And despite that nerf Shanks still needed the most broken Future Sight ever and Blackbeard literally cheats the rules of the universe.

But they had to be nerfed. Otherwise Luffy is so far below them it isn’t even funny.

Kidd and Law somehow Awaken infinite power on their own, Luffy only comes close to that by traoming with masters or the Kings Right Handand he still has to die after that.

Wano was a mistake.

image_2023-09-01_164815127.png There is some nightmare fuel with these fucking effects.

Sanji being a chav is just so wrong...

This is such an underwhelming introduction to Mihawk compared to the build up he got in the manga. Like, him in a one-man battle against an entire fleet is cool and all, but his introduction basically just being a casual phone call while he fucks up strangers just takes the menace you had from watching his ship come into view after the current threat, Kreig, has built up the mysterious monster that fucked up his fleet.

I do like how they present Zoro as the most observant one of the crew; keenly noting suspicious behaviour, pressing people on their bullshit and subtly taking his first mate role seriously. It's some good shit.

It's weird how in this show people like Mihawk can walk in and have no one but Zoro recognise him.

Zoro's near death being treated as an eye opening 'Shit got real' moment for Luffy is actually a cool change since I don't really remember Luffy having much of a reaction in the manga version, he just encourages Zoro and then moves on.

Feels like a weird change to have Zeff eat his own leg to survive rather than sacrifice it saving Sanji's life.

Arlong looks like a melted harry potter goblin.

And that's another villain introduction that's utterly underwhelming compared to the source material.

The Arlong fight is much less interesting when all Arlong does is throw Luffy around and leaves no wounds, not even any bruises.
