Hottest Take : Luffy should Marry a Random lady...because she is a better cook than Sanji.
What temperature is it if you replace random lady with anime only character? 1693648969387.png

I finished the LA and I think it was pretty enjoyable. It's the best anime adaptation I've seen so far.
Not really close to the quality of the manga or even anime, but captures the charm well and it's able to tell the East Blue saga with a great pacing.
I think this is a great way to introduce new people to the series.
Considering that the only weebs that haven't seen OP by now are the ones intimidated by the 1000 chapter/episodes number, an 8 episodes show is very easy to get into.
I'm pretty sure that soon there will be a bunch of new fans binging the manga/anime after starting with this show.

The good:
- The casting (Luffy, Sanji, Buggy and Arlong were all great. I don't think any actor sucked at their role)
- The sets (Baratie and Arlong Park specially, they looked really faithful to the manga, without feeling fake)

The bad:
- The direction. (Most of the time it was just ok, but whenever they tried to copy the angles from the anime it ended up looking like amateur shit. The problem is that they decided to copy the anime in the most iconic scenes, ZoroVsMihawk, "Luffy, help me" and it only decreased the impact of those scenes because they looked goofy instead of emotional).
- The costume design. (Colored hair looked like shit, most costumes looked like cheap trash, many didn't really work with live action and the fish-man looked disgusting at first, though they did grew up on me by the end. The black cat pirates being the stand out shittiest designs).

I have literally not once in my entire life watched one piece and up until today had 0 intrest in it and I don't even know what the characters are called, but I came across the gear 5 vs kaido fight on youtube and god fucking damn that animation was gorgeous.

That shit blows 90% of animated movies today out of the water. Even within the constraints of a TV budget it looks fucking amazing. There's some actual love and skill put into it which is something that can be very rarely said today about animation.

The Zoro vs. King fight right before it was also great with how much they animated it. If you're going to jump into the anime, this is the 5% exception to what you normally get, just be warned. They've had a new animation style for the past 150 episodes but it's still weekly TV budget level where they let some animators go ham every 20 or so episodes.

One thing I just realized is not only does Luffy have new music with his drums of liberation but I think the samurai flute is going to be Zoro's new win the battle theme.

That's fair, but it still demonstrates an inate level of care for animation in the first place that you rarely see today. Most animated movies/series simply use the animation as a medium to tell the story discarding the actual art of animation itself.

I've never seen an actual animated fight from jojo, naruto, etc, that can actually be enjoyed devoid of context or characterization purely on animation to this degree before.

Brothers started watching it without me (reeeee--oh well) and they're enjoying it so far, but they just barely got to see Buggy in action just now.

I want to find the source, but one of them mentioned that some of the changes done here was most likely from Oda himself as a way to "officially" be able to go back to fix up/change parts of the East Blue now that he knows what he's doing compared to back then. Like Nami being more involved during the Captain Morgan incident, for example. And apparently, everyone's casting (not just the Straw Hats) is more-or-less based on their nationality if they were from the real world, but I don't exactly believe that.

But yeah, I dunno when I'm going to actually sit down to watch this tbh. May save it for a rainy (well, rainier) day.

If you do decide to watch it... Make sure to find a list of the filler episodes so that you can ignore said filler episodes.

they exist for good reason (making sure the anime doesn't catch up with the comic its based off of.) But most of the fillers suck really hard because they were just made up on the spot by dudes at the animation studio to buy time.

Or you can just read said comic.

either way it's a fun ride, goofy, silly, occasionally dark, all around fun.

Agreed Rainbow Mist is so boring, skip it. Most of the other filler isn’t to bad and the G8 arc is great. Probably not a opinion shared with many here but I actually enjoyed the filler arc that happened after Enies Lobby. The one with the guys who steal pirates flags.

Don't listen to him, Oil, the filler is fine until the anime hits Water 7.

Nah, skip Rainbow Mist. The rest of the pre-Water 7 filler is fine.

Is there an accurate list somewhere of filler and nonfiller episodes? I read there was a project called one piece abridged that cuts out the filler but some people say it also cuts out important stuff so I don't know.

The only project like that I know is called One Pace. It’s supposed to cut the anime down to be more like the manga. I’ve never watched it myself though. For the fillers just google one piece filler arcs and that should be good. One Piece doesn’t have the same problem with filler as shows like Naruto and Bleach did. Where those shows would have like whole 20+ episodes of filler arcs. One pieces filler is a few episodes usually just enough to get a few chapters out. Generally it’s filler is before and after a new arc, and if there’s a movie coming out there will be a few episodes of special filler that are supposed to connect to the movie.
