Old habits die hard, but I haven't been active since Digimon Tri ended. I just happened to check my dash and there 'e is.
Also I reblogged some hilarious One Piece stuff before going inactive. For all your crazies, there was still some greatness to be found.

I have watched it through, I'll keep trying to do episode overviews since I do want to watch with the Japanese audio. By One Piece standards maybe 2 out of 10 but more like 1. By live action anime or Netflix original standards more like 7 out of 10. Overall I'd say 5. There's some big issues with the whole rather than individual episodes but my goodness are actors giving actual effort throughout. Directors and writers were the second biggest problem after the massive "you can't do anime in live action" one. It's not great, it may not be good. But it's a lot better than it should be.
The problem is I have no idea who it's aimed at. Maybe the age group that the various superhero CW shows were pitched at but it both does and doesn't feel more childish than that.
Weird aside. Did anyone else think Buggy was being played by Joel McHale from Community? Something about the performance made me think of him.
Bianca Oosthuizen is Sham's actress. An attractive woman but I struggled to see it in this role. I also would have no clue how to pronounce her surname.
Yeah, I was hoping the trailer scene would be it. If Kuro just disappeared from view once then the next appearance was that almost spider-like blades unveiling from behind it would have been great. Instead like you say it's weird.
He does. It quite annoys me. The costume is not bad by costume standards but it's the limitation live action has.

This one is for Zoro whereas before it's been Luffy, Buggy and Usopp. Also even the sylised depiction of Usopp no longer have the long noses and that saddens me.
Usopp's escorting the marines back to the mansion trying to sell them on the truth about the evil Butler. Unsurprisingly Helmeppo's pretty disbelieving that the guy his deadbeat dad constantly brags about killing is alive.
Back there Nami finds a Luffy full of poison and immobile on the kitchen table. She hides in a cupboard as she hears people approaching Kuro and Nyaban siblings enter. They are less than thrilled to find a near dead pirate and of course spill much of their schemes while Nami is listening.
Marines at the door. Kuro is less than thrilled but committing to the plan especially when it's clear the reason they are here is Usopp. Since there'sa little evidence Helmepoi stays on target and Kuro sees an excellent option to dump one problem on them, claiming Usopp brought the Straw Hats there and they drank the place dy.
Usopp gets increasingly panicky but as Koby fairly points out there's no evidence. Even so Koby is willing to try and tries to persist the questioning. Downstairs Nami nails Sham in the skull with a frying pan which while audible upstairs is explained away as old houses. Usopp goes sprinting for town to do his "the pirates are coming routine" and Kuro closes the door on team Marine"
Zoro in the well with the flashback scene. Kendo sparring on a mat in the open air rather than a dojo. Kuina and her dad are both here, her hair is looking a lot more blue than black but I guess you could argue it either way in the anime. I already bitched about them getting a young Zoro who's taller than her, what can I say. I loved little brat Zoro and his mouthy attitude in the anime.
Usopp wakes Kaya and gets in through the window to warn her. She justifiably is fairly sceptical about everything even to the extent of slapping him when he tries to get hold of her to make her leave.
I really hate that they've massively downplayed the cowardly side of Usopp down. It was a big part of his character, especially all the times he overcame entirely justifiable fear.
The Kuro crew assemble in the kitchen, finding Nami knows what's going on. Midnight's rung, Kaya's of age. It's literally murder o'clock. To help with that the house has security shutters deployed by a ship's helm in the kitchen. So we're now in a horror setting. As Nami joins Kaya and Usopp we get a shot of the Kuro crew, two of them now more similarly attired to their manga look, posing up for getting their killing on.
Kaya's suspicious even of Nami telling her the story, assuming Usopp's behind it. On the other hand given he didn't know about the poisoned medicine and has been one of the people helping her take it over the years he's pretty clearly horrified. Again though this kind of subverts quite a bit of the Kaya/Usopp dynamic by having Kaya trust a relative stranger who she's already caught stealing. Not believing Usopp over Kuro is suitable but still.
Fortunately as they do leave using servant's passages in Kuro hears her coughing in the walls and since he is now in stabby mode it's very clear what the truth is.
Zoro and Kunia meet for a duel with real blades in flashback land. People have already said it up thread but Zoro's fight scenes are likely some of the better and that holds true in the flashback. Kunia has the right level of cocky to her, she's not gloating but it's clear Zoro does get under her skin and she enjoys making him lose. The scene is interposed with Zoro climbing out the well he was dumped in, repeatedly falling. The duel ends as the manga did though I do feel that unnecessary jumping was unnecessary. There seems to be a desire to do that like it makes a final confrontation look dramatic.
Kunia goes on a clearly TERF written rant that'll see screaming in team trans activist. Joking aside it's the manga dialogue or near as damn it. It's nice, again the cast are doing their best.
With unnamed Marine extras carrying Luffy that leaves Koby and Helmeppo free to bitch at one another. Helmeppo makes some surprisingly good points but is interrupted by Luffy regaining consciousness in time to vomit blue all over blondy.
Back to the cast at the mansion Kaya has a mild freak out over Kuro's betrayal. LuckilyUsopp Nami is there with words of reassurance. There's other points inside the house with the security shutter helms but Kuro apparently knows where they are as they try to use it. Perhaps there's only that room and the kitchen.
Zoro in the well and back to the flashback which means it's time to confirm Kunia's death. Again it's not bad but her dad has had so little time till now it feels off and of course the whiplash of her death being announced. I feel some stuff maybe could have been cut to show the pair having other practice duels in a little montage before going to this but hey, it wasn't perfect in the manga either.
We get to see other students heading along to the ceremony to mourn her and it's during that that Zoro asks for the sword. Again, it feels iffy to do it here, I think it would have worked better for Zoro to be training and breaking down while the ceremony is happening then approaching him when is alone afterwards but hey, present Zoro gets out of the well.
Oh and Merry is dead, dead. I miss the sheep but I can understand wanting to kill someone.
A now conscious Luffy asks Koby to let him go back. Helmeppo provides wise words of wisdom from his father, "a dead pirate weighs the same as a live one" and I kind of see his point. This is a problem with having a Marine group specifically hunting them at this point in the group, it weakens Koby's arc because he can't commit to his Marine ideal and keep helping Luffy at the same time.
Of course at this point Zoro turns up to beat up the spare Marines and Helmeppo. Not intentionally but still. Koby tells them they are under arrest and is talked down to like a child by the pair of Straw Hats. It would have been kinder if they knocked him out.
At the mansion Kuro finds the room they are in, the victims taking cover in the room under furniture coverings and the like as he begins carving up bits of the room to try to find them while having a rant about Kaya failing to make anything of her life and being a constantly whiny child. I quite enjoyed the choice to have him draw the claw blades across a harp creating a lovely discordant sound. Again the cast do well with what they have.
Zoro gets the shutters open while Luffy puts something in place to hold them open. This kind of is a thing, while Luffy has freakish strength Zoro is constantly depicted as stronger which while possibly accurate ties into a feeling I keep getting that all the Straw Hats feel a little bit punier than they should be. Inside the two split up.
Kuro goads Kaya since he still has not found anyone who gets some sort of letter opener maybe. While Nami initially tells her to ignore it she says "I'm stronger than you think" so naturally that gets agreement that they should burst from their hiding place, rush Kuro and immediately end up with blades at their necks. Usopp takes a shot which turns his attention away long enough for them to get clear and gets Usopp a thumping.
Zoro vs Nyabann siblings. It's good. The limited surroundings inside the house affect it as does the later Kuro/Luffy fight but that is a feel throughout. The show keeps feeling restrained, unable to really stretch out. That is the harsh limits of reality without blowing stupid amounts on iffy effects. Also Sham keeps trying to hiss like a cat and that faintly annoys me in live action. Mostly because thanks to the Farms I know that's making someone creepy very erect. A nice touch is they gave Sham a small bell so we do get a similar sound effect to the anime at times and indeed a lot of the fight coreography is taken from the fight. Buchi trying a two-handed smash, Sham launching off their sibling, the theft of a sword. It's quite good.
Luffy arrives to stop Kuro, who gives excellent distaste face. As mentioned by other posters the swift movement works oddly, though in the room with lots of cover he's able to stop Luffy finding him. Anime Luffy however would have trashed half the room before this Kuro got too far into his "you can trust no-one " speech. Kuro manages to cut him and another recurring issue for this live action shows. An unwillingness to go bloody. They're not the injuries of blades of that side, they're barely razor blade level cuts. I'm not certain if that is a rating thing but I know it's going to be a bigger issue down the line.
Stop hissing Sham.
Luffy and Kuro continue to have a discussion about giving up on dreams and what defines a pirate. Bear in mind the other three are still here at this point. Anime Kuro would have tried to stab them a lot by now. Luffy lands a hit by listening for Kuro starting to move.
Back to other fight. Damn Buchi nice flip. Zoro is winning at this stage even before he gets his sword back, looks like no Nami assist in this version. And indeed a fairly low key drop of the two.
Again they take some stuff from the manga for the Kuro Luffy fight but it's too short and too small for it. Eventually rubber boy grabs both of Kuro's hands, slowly twists them to get the blades out of the way then gives him a Gum-Gum Bell to the face to send him flying out of the window.
Stop hissing Sham. And name whoever the writer who gave you creepy vibes when he gave you your dialogue was.
Kaya of course suggests giving them a ship to help them on their way resulting in Luffy being smug and Nami being irked.
They name the ship for the dead lawyer. Seems weird for someone they barely exchanged words with but hey, he did look like a sheep so that makes sense.
Naturally Usopp gets invited on board, again the rushed feeling makes it feel iffy. And his point that Kaya needs him is kind of fairer in this case. She's lost the family lawyer and everyone else she trusted was plotting to betray her. But still, she wants to stand on her own two feet.
And she kisses him. Because of course. Fuck off Netflix.
Cue We Are as the background music as Merry sets out to sea, cannot fault that choice. And the ship does look good. We get a look at the crew settling into their new home. Nami navigating, Zoro hanging up two of his swords and taking the third to the hammock with him, Usopp eating popcorn and Luffy sat on Merry's head cheering.
Meanwhile Kuro's in a small rowboat heading away from the island. I was hoping the Marines would pick him up but instead Garp's explaining Koby's failure was the plan as they begin pursuing Merry.
Usopp presents his flag for the ship. As mentioned the nose is normal size and looks completely wrong. He and Luffy get into an argument about who is captain causing Nami to finally snap and start laughing. Naturally this moment is interrupted by Marine cannon fire with Luffy providing the revelation to his crew about his relationship to Garp.
Two things. First this was a chance to try to sell Garp as the terror he is. The Marine's should be shooting from outside cannon range because Garp should be throwing this. They do sort of address that as it goes on but it is a weakness of the show overall rather than a strength. Secondly I really hate them bringing this in this early. I get it but still, it weakens everyone's characters doing this way. Adaptation, things will change, blah blah. I still disagree. But that's for later episodes.

Short answer no. There's nothing new or better here than the manga or anime. Longer answer if you have time to kill and nothing you want to watch more maybe. I think if the first episode does it for you the rest likely will.

Well, it's not the first time somebody with an obscene power gets sidelined/nerfed conveniently. Robin already suffered that fate since her fruit is stupid powerful and till the timeskip, the only decent fight she had was in skypea.

Feels apt to pirate this show, and it's gotten much worse as the series goes on, the first episode feels like the most scrutinized and rewritten. The show just doesn't want to embrace the silliness or speed of the manga. As a result it feels like a retarded version of the manga.
Why is Mihawk a gay now? In the manga he's trying to be goth but that's not gay. Usually.
Killing Merry is just a faggot move, that comes across as hollywood writer mean spiritedness.
Zoro's flashback was a joke and making him a tween undercut the whole story by not making him an annoying punk kid. Going back to not embracing the silliness, Zoro would just parkour out of the well in episode 4, but be so lost he finds himself back in it. And getting taken out by a wine bottle by Shem of all people makes Zoro scenes seem written by the stereotype of a Sanji fan.

I don;t think Mihawk is meant to be gay but I know what you mean. He feels underwhelming. Not every scene is bad but I think if you gave the actor the voiceover job he would go to town. Limited by live action he just can't nail it.
Yes and no. Even manga fans agree Oda pusses out on killing people sometimes. Now when he commits, he fucking commits. But I see Half Piece here thinking killing Merry makes them more deep and gritty and (insert Crawling In My Skin here)
Can't argue much. I want my angry midget Zoro and I don't want one of the more credibly dangerous members of the crew KO'd by slapstick unless it is good slapstick. Luffy accidentally downing a gallon of poison is good for an example in show.

I don't think keeping Merry dead was done necessarily for the sake of edge alone. Going by the Producer's own words, the call was probably made as a way to tighten these arcs up to two episodes. Which, in the grand scheme of things in One Piece, is an easier call to make.

Arlong Park looks like an actual park. Neat.
Arlong basically shames the corrupt Marine Commander into giving him reparations. I can't tell if that's amazing or stupid.
Bellemere looks spot on but sadly she doesn't keep any of her charm. I know she's a small character with barely any screen time, but I always appreciated seeing where Nami got her attitude from.
I don't like the change of having Luffy there to hear Nami's backstory or getting to actually talk to Nami. What made his moment with Nami powerful is how he didn't need any context, he didn't need to understand anything, he didn't need Nami to explain herself; all he was waiting for was for Nami to tell him to go kick down Arlong's door. Doesn't help that Luffy screaming for everyone to form up and go kick some ass is swiftly followed by them awkwardly coming to a stop to observe that Coco Village is getting raided, and then they walk over there to talk with the townsfolk. Really takes the wind out of this moment's sails.
We do not get the iconic walk to Arlong Park. My day is ruined.
Ussop's arc is completely removed, doesn't even hesitate to fight Chew.
The biggest problem I find with the fights here is that they lack much tension or, better to say, moving parts. It's just fight until someone wins rather than a back-and-forth where the characters are faced with multiple factors they have to deal with. There's no having to deal with the fishmen trapping one of them underwater and abusing the racial trait differences, there's no scrambling to counter Arlong's deadly moves, there's no dealing with Zorro's injuries holding him back, there's no Ussop needing to overcome his cowardice, it's just punch, and then punch and then punch and then bring the whole building down. Arlong doesn't bite Luffy once, I don't think he even bruises Luffy; even Kuro got to cut Luffy.
Arlong basically shames the corrupt Marine Commander into giving him reparations. I can't tell if that's amazing or stupid.
Bellemere looks spot on but sadly she doesn't keep any of her charm. I know she's a small character with barely any screen time, but I always appreciated seeing where Nami got her attitude from.
I don't like the change of having Luffy there to hear Nami's backstory or getting to actually talk to Nami. What made his moment with Nami powerful is how he didn't need any context, he didn't need to understand anything, he didn't need Nami to explain herself; all he was waiting for was for Nami to tell him to go kick down Arlong's door. His costume makes his head look much bigger than the rest of his body; I think they simply needed a 'wider' actor. Otherwise, unless he's positioned next to another character, he almost looks scrawny.

Most likely. But there was other disposable shit that could have gone to tighten up the episode rather than kill Merry. Him surviving could have been easy, just have him gasp to life as Zoro leaves the well and remind him to send help, Zoro only remembering as they leave the island and him show up later, likely coated in bandages, when Kaya is smiling at the wanted posters.
Speaking of, mostly because I am a long way off that. I really loved Zeff pinning up Luffy's wanted poster under Employee of the Week in the Baratie
Pretty much. I've a lot of Arlong issues not all of which are costume related. They needed to playing the perspective tricks a lot more than they did and they had ample opportunity to do so.

The live action sounds really fucking gay and bad besides a few moments and some like able actors.
So enough of that here’s my hot take on One Piece, maybe: I think Dressrosa is much better than Wano. Besides some moments, and story/lore/etc. Wano felt like it didn’t live up at all to all the buildup it had. It’s why I’m really worried about them going to Elbaf because that has been built up even longer.
What are some of your guys hot takes, or maybe this isn’t a hot take here like it would be other places lol.
