If you ever do, make sure you pick up the ReMind DLC since it adds a bunch of QOL and combat features. It's not as extensive as Final Mix for the first two games, but it's a big jump nonetheless.
Loved ReMind. Did not like that if effectively took my platinum trophy in 3 and spit on it with the new Data Org trophies I had to get lmfao

The new combos and keyblades are a free update, the dlc does add the challange options for new game plus and the fantastic extra bosses

Now, if you wanted to completely ruin the above what would you do? You'd somehow bring said character back and restore everyone's memories. The whole fucking plot meant absolutely nothing.
It was obvious Xion will be revived by the end of D3. One of the big problems in KH3 is that there isn't really a hook to the game. You don't learn anything until you get the big final battle. Every world beforehand feels more like an obligation of showing a Disney IP, wasting your time and showing another game boss that you stopped caring about by now. It doesn't help that all those "real" Organization 13 look far more bland than the original and that you don't even get to play as new characters that have an actual past with them. Having the nobodies suddenly be good and stable also ruined their entire point and tragedy. If anything you sometimes got answers to things you didn't know were even a thing like all those cellphone games.

The gameplay itself was awful and way too floaty. All the IPs world sucked. How the fuck you ruin Hercules' world

The only thing I remember from the game is Metokur's stream that Canadian tv show with "Let the darkness grow" and accidentally based morals.

This is really just proving what I said that fairweather fans just wanted a rehash of 2.

I love Kingdom hearts, played the fuck out of 2 and 358/2. I was excited for 3 for years. Then it gets released and its just underwhelming. For me the story felt rush and the disney worlds literally served no purposed other than to stretch the lenght of the game. Although i did enjoyed the toy story world. After i finished 3 i just stopped caring for the franchise, the dlc didnt motivated me to buy it or even play the game again. The mobile just made shit more overly complicated and now i recently discovered that theres a new one in the way called missing link. I know that it is supposed to be a new arc, but after the sour taste that 3 left in my mind, i dont know if the series deserves its fan to come back to it.

Alright.. Time to dive into Kingdom hearts X(chi)

1701469573132.png

This was actually two games and ironically the first title was not a mobile game. It was a PC browser title that was japan only before being folded into the mobile version that continued the story. Developed around the same time as 3, It used a card based battle system and was one player, although you could interact with other players and share cards. (surprisingly luxord never appeared in this game or the next) For simplicity's sake we'll just go over the story that it had for now and tackle the next one later.

The plot is a prequel to every KH game, but they have worlds and items from the Original KH that they handwave as being Projections and power from the future? (90% percent of the most confusing elements are the lore explanations for gameplay elements.)

Basically the man who introduced keyblades out into the wild is the Master of Masters, Nobody knows who he is (although there are plenty of hints at his past later on). He trains 6 apprentices, 5 of which become masters and train/impart keyblades to kids below them. The MOM gives them a book that supposedly tells the future, says bad shit is coming, sets everybody up to be paranoid with each other and then mysteriously disappears.

Overall it's not that complicated (YET) You start out as a random customizable keyblade wielder and you've got to choose from one of 5 unions.

In order of player count popularity from best to worst (This never changed by the way)

1701469856735.png
1701469931971.png

Vulpus led by Foreteller Ava. (Greed) The most fair and decent union leader that wants to save as many wielders as possible. Although not above questionable decision making.

1701469991284.png
1701470118333.png
Unicornis led by Forteller Ira. (Wrath) An all around good guy who supposed to be the leader, but lacks charisma and is quick to get pissed off when he suspects someone of intentionally being a traitor. (This is the union I picked)

1701470617152.png
1701470685555.png

Leopardos Led by Foreteller Gula. (Gluttony) Paranoid of everyone else, he's the first to gather up the light and start the arms race that leads to the keyblade war.

1701471059479.png

1701471087621.png
Anguis led by Foreteller Invi. (Envy) She aggressively spies and snitches on everyone and is zealously dedicated to the MOM

1701472082927.png

1701472239847.png
Ursus led by foreteller Aced. (Sloth) He's the dumbass of the group. The first to start shit, piss everyone off and adopt a might makes right attitude. (He's sloth in the sense that he completely ignores his orders to support ira)

The choice of union doesn't really matter that much plot wise. It will change the union leader that interacts with you from time to time and a bit of the dialogue, but nothing major. (mostly) This is all basically set up and backstory for these guys to become the next flunky bad guys in KH4. I highlighted it, but all their names are shorthand for the seven deadly sins.

The Movie they included in 2.8 backcover does a very good job of setting these guys up and the relationship they had with the MOM. But to make it short, he gave them conflicting orders and set the stage for them to come into conflict and start the keyblade war.

You and everyone else are given a cute cat familiar named Chirithy ( later revealed to be a dream eater, which raises some interesting unaddressed implications) who basically serves as your mission control. Your objective is to work with other keyblade wielders, kill heartless, find out where they are coming from and Most importantly gather Lux (light) from visiting other worlds to shore up your power.

We are supposed to gather the light because it's been prophesied that if we dont the world we come from (daybreak town) will be overcome with darkness. Unfortunately the book say's there's also a traitor among the unions, which has put everybody on edge. Ava acting on instructions from the MOM ignores the Lux and gathers wielders to join her dandelion club so they can survive the coming keyblade war

So.. a lot of the game is simple stuff until the endgame. Go out to disney worlds repeat a bunch of shit you did in KH 1 with minor variations and find the source of the heartless. Eventually you make two friends

1701473083868.png
Ephemer

1701473235635.png

Skuld

You then figure out that you actually have not been going to real disney worlds at all. They are (holographic?) projections from the future and you've merely been draining all the light from Daybreak Town. As a result the darkness is actually growing stronger.

After doing some digging Ephemer disappears and gets recruited as a dandelion leader by Ava. You dont know this and start receiving ominous dreams about him. While all this is going on you've also been getting cryptic and increasingly menacing interactions with another nightmare Chirithy that eventually sics a bunch of fallen heartless keyblade kids on you

1701473560947.png

You fight them off but everything goes to hell in a hand basket anyway. Eventually Keyblade wielders and foretellers start attacking each other in the streets and it escalates to the brink of full blown war.

Ava tests you by pretending to be your union leader turned evil ( or Ira if you picked her as your leader ) and attempts to recruit you. Skuld joins up but you don't trust her and try to stay neutral.

You fight nightmare Chirithy one last time as it reveals it comes from your darkness and has been manipulating you with an item that gathers the "sins" or darkness of other wielders to grow stronger.

1701473696522.png

I love how genuinely nightmarish this is.
You beat it, but it vows to return in "another dream"..

Ava finally finds the sixth apprentice luxu (Lust) who claims to be spying on everyone for the master and has done nothing to prevent the conflict. Ava impulsively assumes he's behind everything and attacks him, kicking off the war proper.

As the final battle kicks off, you end up fighting all the union leaders(except the one you picked) and just barely survive without defeating them. even Ava for some reason gets involved.(and fights you if she's not your leader) eventually you're the last one standing on the brink of death in a graveyard full of keys.

1701474714230.png

Suddenly Ephemer and skuld arrive in a heavenly light to rescue you... And then you wake up. You're in the sleeping beauty world wondering what that dream was about and then wander off as maleficent in the background muses she's in a place sora can't meddle with. (It'll make sense soon.... Eventually,)

Ok so Kingdom hearts Union X
1701555785039.png
the game America got and essentially retells/ continues the story of xchi.

It actually had the name change more then once. When it first came out it was Kingdom hearts Unchained X. Then when the multiplayer came it was called KH union X and then eventually they folded everything under the dark road title.

Im going to go over the gameplay for a bit before digging into the story, but be prepared. If you think KH had a complex plot before now, you havent seen anything yet.

So when the game first started, it was a mission based series of quests where you very VERY Slowly work your way though Disney crap to get to the good stuff. This was exasperated a bit by the fact that Square prioritized new Jap questlines and metals over us. To the point where I think they got some excusive content that made the game a lot more easy for them.

The gameplay loop was actually pretty solid. It's a rock paper scissors system involving strength, power, and magic and instead of cards we used metals. You get 5 turn based metals or moves in a row and as the game went on they gave you two or three more slots where you could share metals with other players and give your pets metals. (Yeah late game they gave you pets you could customize and use to buff yourself.) The rules and perks got significantly more complicated as the game went on. Basicly auto equip was not worth a dam and you needed a lot of guides, money and math to make the perfect combos. I did none of this shit and either grinded, piggybacked off other players metals or just put the game down and came back in a couple months to pick up all the free gems (They were extremely generous with the currency in this, I never paid a dime.)

Later on when they added coop missions it was actually pretty impressive. You could team up with 5 other people, have a cute loading scene where you can show off how badass your keyblade armor is to the bros and tear though heartless in like 5 seconds. It really pushed my Iphone at the time to limits though.

Clans were a big part of the game and even before mission coop was introduced you could participate in boss fights together to get exp. It would be a huge boon too when metal sharing was introduced. Everybody gets to pick their strongest metal to share and it does not matter if only one guy has blue eyes white dragon if everybody can use it to destroy bosses.

The custimzation was cool. It was rather limited with the flat 2D flash looking animated character you had, but I appreciated the effort and time they put into it (something like two people worked on the animations in this game)

Keyblade armor was something you could buy and I was lucky enough to get lingering will the one time they allowed him to be purchased with gems.

Even with the plot moving at a glacial pace in the final months, there was plenty to do in the game. There was an extensive metal crafting system, side quests, boss fights, coliseum fights, Even a round about way of PVP. (you fight AI versions of people)

They even had a major period where they took a 1000 of the best players and put their names in KH3. I got nowhere near that sadly. I did bust my ass to complete some terrible mini games they added in to get a bonus keyblade in 3. That was not worth it, but eh.

All in all, it wasnt perfect, but I can safely say it was the most engaging phone game I ever played. No other game actually made me give a shit or waste as much time while listening to podcasts.

1701556049052.png

We did not get many crossovers beyond the occasional FF boss turned into a heartless, but the designs were cool.

After that interview with Nomura I am actually feeling truly hyped for Missing Link, especially after finding out that old worlds and heartless pre KH3 may be getting Kingdom Shader treatment.

Now, if you wanted to completely ruin the above what would you do? You'd somehow bring said character back and restore everyone's memories. The whole fucking plot meant absolutely nothing.
Eh, the whole point of putting dire situations into your story is to have the heroes overcome them. It's pretty obvious Roxas and Xion were gonna be brought back since you can't have your main character eat another sentient main character and expect everyone to be cool with it (I'm looking at YOU Crisis 2 & 3). I always thought the whole "you gotta go back" bit was contrived anyway, but I was cool with it since it served as motivation for other characters to be proactive, like axel and diz.

Besides, if Roxas and Xion returning ruins their story, then Sora returning from becoming a heartless after not even 10 minutes ruins KH1. We can Simple and Cope all 358/2 days, but that was such a waste of a good set piece.

The Days manga is unironically great though. Not just by kh standards, but in general. Totally recommend it in lieu of the 1.5+2.5 movie.

ngl, even if the game itself is pretty ass, I love a lot fo teh character interactions from days, the movie that is in the hd collection really fails to capture those and makes it a lesser experience in every way.

Kingdom Hearts Director Nomura: ‘Please Don’t Doxx Yourself’

Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura reminded people not to share screenshots that could accidentally doxx themselves, with the new GPS mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link that is currently holding its closed beta period.

While the story takes place in a fictional world that was shown at the end of Kingdom Hearts III, the game offers a GPS mode that draws from real-life location data, even displaying key location names as players pass by them.

As such, with the closed beta running and likely drawing people planning to stream the games, Nomura released a Twitter post reminding players that while it’s OK to share screenshots of the game, they should beware of accidentally doxxing their real-life location by turning off the real-life locations popping up as needed.

Despite taking place in a fictional world, at a closed-table interview session, Nomura stated that he was convinced to head the smartphone project when other staff described how phones are now capable of console-level quality in games and that GPS was used because he wanted to use the hardware features.

Story-wise, though, there is actually a significant meaning to the use of GPS in the story or world, although Nomura remained silent about the meaning.

Lol I figured out the best way to simplfy things. You want to know what the plot of Union cross is? It's literally this.

After the events of Xchi the surviving dandelions and the player have been put into a holographic replica of daybreak town. Nobody including the player remembers the keyblade war except 5 individuals chosen as leaders by Ava. Although the player is having nightmares about it and eventually puts two and two together. The MOM told ava exactly who to pick and give Books of prophecy to, in order to follow his plans. Although nether she or any of the other foretellers show up. The kids are on their own and they have to figure out what to do.

The 5 new leaders include Ephemer and Skuld as well as three others

1701643812593.png

Ven. Yep that's right, our boy is an original generation keyblade wielder and this is before he meets anybody from birth by sleep. Still a pretty decent kid if confused about why he was chosen as leader...

1701643987814.png

Brain. This guy is a real enigma. Definitely the smartest apple of the bunch and very dedicated to figuring out why and what the hell is going on. He seems related to eraqus from BBS.

1701644101445.png

Lauriam. Previously known as org 13 member Marluxia, he's a pretty passionate but nice guy in this. just wants to find his sister and make sure she's safe.

The gang is a cohesive unit and unlike the foretellers, they dont openly bicker and turn amongst each other. There's just one problem, there actually is a traitor this time.

One of them is a fake. The original leader was supposed to be a girl named Strelitzia who's Lauriams sister

1701644325016.png

You may remember her from the KH4 trailer.

As the leaders are starting to meet up, We see a very well done flashack scene of her working up the courage to talk to the player character after watching them from afar in admiration. However she ends up getting brutally murdered.

(As brutally as you can get in KH anyway, although seeing her alive and well in KH4 raises a lot of questions....) Then her brother shows up to the meeting. Nobody realizes anything is wrong yet.
Basically everyone who is not a leader, has been stuck in a holding pattern in the holodeck with fake worlds and tasks in order to prevent the keyblade war from happening and keep them safe.

Maleficent shows up and tries to take over her holographic digs. The player character kicks her ass effortlessly and it's revealed this is her from right after she "died" in KH 1. She's pissed off and wondering why nothing is going her way. Then a mysterious figure who calls itself Darkness shows up.

1701644838610.png

It explains what's going on. She was sent backwards in time when possessed Riku cut out her heart from her body. Her attempt to takeover her replica kingdom failed because The MOM built the simulation with failsafe's so nobody could abuse it. So she cant "win" and maintain control. He even locked down radiant garden and prevented it from being generated so Maleficent cant get all the data princesses and potentially MacGyver a kingdom hearts. He says she needs to travel to the future of KH2. She thinks it's impossible. He knows a way, and together they can get out of this holodeck.

Lauriam quickly realizes something is wrong when his sister doesnt show up. So he consults his buddy Elrena

1701644957984.png

Aka org 13 member Larxine. She's a completely timid sweetheart in this. With nary a cruel sadistic bone in her body.

They manage to piece together that she was trying to get in contact with the player, so that's where you get involved and meet up with everyone else.

Brain figures out the program is still destined to fall into ruin like the keyblade war, so he declares his intention to become a virus and overwrite the program. The holodeck daybreak town then starts spazing out and generating glitches similar to Coded. memory recordings start playing as ghostly apparitions of the MOM and Ava talking and Strelitzia dying start showing up. This is how they figure out Strelitzia is dead. The source of the glitches is coming from the tower so everyone gathers over there.

Brain manages to figure out that someone violently connected the holodeck with another world and that this is what's causing things to glitch out. Most importantly its completely locked down the holodeck from the outside worlds. (The connected world is wreck it Ralph. there's no surprise cameos or anything terribly new so ill skip it) . The player gets sent in to scout ahead and fix the problem while everyone else starts putting their heads together.

Brain figures out three things. Ava picked him to be a leader against the MOM's orders as he isnt on the list, Strelitzia was supposed to be a leader and Ven also isnt on the list. When confronted Ven collapses when trying to recall what happened. (He realizes he killed her)

Meanwhile Darkness leads maleficent to the place that will send her forward in time
1701645434653.png

Remember this?

1701645389907.png

Oh yeah that's right baby, that random ass room in KH1 has plot relevance! It's an ark (lifepod in english)device That transports the user from the holodeck to another ark device in the real daybreak town. From there maleficent can use the ark again to travel into the future as long as someone remembers her and she has a medium to reform her body. Maleficent isnt hip on the plan but darkness read enough of the book of prophecy to figure out it will work. Maleficent wonders why the hell everything needs to be so complicated and darkness explains he's an old friend who needs her in the future to act as a waypoint for him and others to travel to.
Suddenly Lauriam bursts in to fight her and kick some ass!

1701645798423.png
Ouch..
One of the pods gets destroyed and maleficent uses up the other, although darkness stays behind in the real daybreak town to take care of some other business.

Lauriam and ventus both have some pretty ominous dreams. Lauriam sees Strelitzia in a white looking org coat

While Ven recounts how he got possessed by darkness and straight up shanked strelzella
Brain and co put two and two together and try to figure out why darkness killed strezla. Lauriam comes in and overhears the conversation demanding to know what's going on. Brain realizes the darkness is trying to divide everyone against each other like the foretellers and attempts to calm him down. Then Ven comes in and confesses, Lauriam gets pissed and is about to attack ven before he collapses and darkness comes out to play.

This thing is stright up a demon. It has no morality, no concept or understanding of right and wrong. It had ven kill Strelitzia because ven wished to be a leader and because it was written in the book of prophecy. When asked how the hell it knows what's in the book, it calls the MOM an old friend. It also say's there's more of them (13 and the one with maleficent is separate from the one with ven) although it's the only one in the room right now.

It kicks everyone's ass before the player jumps out to fight it. Then the entire purpose of the holodeck is revealed. This entire simulation and ark was built to contain and destroy the darkness. The moment maleficent used the lifepod the self destruct count down started for both daybreak towns and the world starts to collapse.

Even with the player, the kids cant defeat the dark because it has no form. Ven decides to absorb it and force it into a live vessel to be destroyed as everyone pleads with him not to.

Meanwhile, in the real daybreak town, the 6th apprentice Luxu is watching everything from afar. We then have an extensive series of flashbacks with the MOM that are so awesome I recommend you watch. There's a lot of hints as to who he really is.

For the MOM the keyblade war has been going on sense his childhood... but they didnt call it the keyblade war in his time and the darkenss looked... worse back then. He's been fighting his own personal war for a long time.

Luxu is not hip on this plan of potentially getting a bunch of kids killed and worlds blown up to destroy the darkness. MOM borderline channels Nomura and gives him shit for assuming his theory about the MOM's plan is the one true answer (without actually explaining what the answer is) . Luxu puts his trust in the MOM but is allowed to watch the kids progress without interfering.

Daybreak towns entire purpose was to strengthen keyblade wielder "seeds of light" and send them forward into the future. MOM also explains that while the 13 darknesses are borderline invincible as pure shadow, without human forms to possess they will eventually lose their intelligence and weather away. And when they do possess someone they are vulnerable to destruction (at the cost of the hosts life.)

This was the ENTIRE point of the keyblade war. The master planned to set the foretellers against each other so they would be perfect vessels or the darkness and be destroyed. While the kids in holo world get possessed by the remaining darkness's and go to the future for some reason ( I assume to be destroyed later)
Luxu gets pissed and horrified at everyone being raised as lambs for the slaughter, but the MOM rebukes him and talks about how the darkness took away everything from him when he was a boy. Luxu still commits to following his orders, but privately when out of earshot the MOM considers him a Traitor that will do the right thing.

Back in present day Luxu prepares to fight the darkness left by maleficent in the real daybreak town, but quickly deposits an unknown individual wrapped in a white blanket into one of the lifepods to fling into the future. Then he fights the dark offscreen

Ven is knocked out in bed and everybody is pretty worried about the situation. Then Elrena shows up to talk to Lauriam. Her chirithy says it saw Strelitzia walking with someone in a black cloak while wearing a white robe. Everyone is understandably confused. Brain figures luxu might have been able to bring her back somehow with the holodeck data.

Everyone heads back to the ark but there's a massive problem. There's only 5 lifepods left. The player, skuld and Ephemer volunteer to stay behind. Brain takes a pod to real daybreak town in an attempt to fix the connection on the other side and get everyone out. Lauriam, Elrena, and an unconscious ven get in the pods and are sent to the future in case Brain fails and everything is destroyed. Brain cant fix the destruction of the holodeck but he can send his lifepods back and save two more people. After doing so he is confronted by Luxu, who seemingly defeats him offscreen.

Back in the holodeck the remaining 4 darknesses come together and demand that you open up a portal to let them spread and infect the data worlds (videogames) in wreck it wralph. Ephemer refuses but the player character executes a MASSIVE BALL BUSTING BLUFF and pretends to turn evil by BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF Ephemer and Skuld as the FINAL BOSS fight. Ephemer shoots the player in the heart with his keybade and hurls them into the wreck it ralph world with the darkness following. Ephemer and Skuld are last seen getting in the escape pods crying their guts out.
1701646847802.png

Meanwhile the player laughs their asses off at the darkness as it realizes it's been tricked. They are in a wreck it ralph tunnel/wire that's sealed from both ends so they'll all starve to death. Then the player hugs their chirithy as light over takes them.

Then we get a MOM flashback of him talking to one of the darknesses. This was such a big deal Ray chase volunteered to voice act this on twitter. This game does not have voiced dialogue.

MOM let the darkness look at the book so he could trick it. The book of prophecy's is a borderline fraud. the MOM can see future events using the eye on the keyblade he gave Luxu, but that doesnt mean he understands or even comprehends every event it witnesses. It mainly exists as a self fulfilling prophecy and as a way for him to chart out the future and have points in time to manifest and travel to. The MOM then muses he's finally found a world beyond light and dark that's safe from the sentient darkness. a world so incomprehensible it's considered FICTION.

Then we see all the trapped holodeck keyblade wielders go to sleep with their chirithy's taking their hearts and transforming into dream eaters to safeguard their souls.
The player then seemingly reincarnates their heart and memories into a young xehanort of all people.

Then we get the epilogue.

Ephemer's pod is seen floating adrift in the sunken remains of a daybreak town. Maleficent goes back to KH2, Lauriam and Elrena are shifted to separate unknown worlds, Ven is found by xehanort in the keyblade graveyard. Skuld is completely MIA. Then Luxu reveals his face in the keyblade graveyard badlands and is shown to look like brain.

Finally we get a tease of Missing Link. With Brain somehow waking up in Scala and meeting a hooded figure named Sigurd (an unknown but reportedly very important character, Nomura had a hidden missage about him in the KH4 promo material)
1701647279031.png
He offers to explain everything back at headquarters before they pass a statue of Ephemer "the first keyblade master" and Brain with tears in his eyes says "he was a good friend"

And that's about it folks. I got dark road later and then we'll be caught up.

Incredible. This series has been so quiet we got a second thread for it.
Anyway, I would really like to see a compilation that redoes all of the yet-to-be-remade handheld games. Days could use the upgrade, Coded is legit great (though narratively it only really serves as a preamble to Dream Drop), and the mobile ones are too lore-relevant to be stuck on phones.
