Mega Rad Gun Thread

After some research it appears that the recievers don't actually stretch and instead the headspace issues are a result of people carelessly swapping around different sized bolt heads, which were made to compensate for manufacturing tolerances, although much of that "research" is based on anecdotes so take that with a grain of salt. Can't find much about the Savage 99s; the action looks pretty sturdy at a glance but I haven't looked too deep into them. Cool rifles though with advanced design for their age.
Ideally if you have to replace the bolt or any component on your Enfield you should stick to parts made at the same arsenal as your gun, (ishapore on an ishapore, or lithgow on a lithgow) there have also been people that have used bolt and other pressure bearing parts off of DP rifles that ended up being defective, and then the gun blows up.

I don't mean to come off as a dick but just saying to confirm. If you own an SMLE you can just go look it's pretty easy to see. Fucking lovely action. Smoothest bolt I've ever owned including the times I've done polish work on Mausers etc.
Like most mil surp people swap parts with no rhyme or reason. Well there often is but it sure doesn't feel like it later to us.
and the SMLE is not as good as the Lee-Metfords were. a lot of compromises in the finishing work to shit them out as fast as possible for the two wars. the Lee-Metford was almost artisanal in comparison. SMLE has the better barrel though.

in terms of raw strength though, the Mauser is stronger, which is why the British were going to clone it with the P14 when they were planning to go to, but really for most cartridges is don't matter.

Ideally you fit a new bolt via a competent gunsmith but most people won't pay for that and just gamble on it just working.

When the modern gunsmith waitlist makes you choose between winging it today or waiting five years for a screw to be tightened, people will try to do it themselves especially in the case of cheaper milsurp.

the enfield is just like the mosin in the way that institutional momentum kept them going because adopting another rifle would be to expensive or inconvenient. Also the enfield especially the no.1 MK3 never stopped being artisnal each gun requires handfitting for the forends, its has weird spring dampers for the skinny barrel, the only real simplifications where removal of stuff that was there for older style doctrine like the volly sight and magazine cut off. The real simplification wouldn't come until the No.4, the core design is literally is a compressed black powder action that just so happened to be strong enough to handle smokeless, like the Schmidt ruben/ K11.

The US was similar with the Springfield rifle. the base rifle came about in 1855, then simplified in 1861, converted to rimfire in 1865, centerfire in 1867, rebarreled in 1873 to .45-70, new sights in 1884 and remained in service until WW1.

The US army was experimenting with bolt actions as early as the late 1850s, even issued some in the civil war (greene rifle). In 1879 the US did adopt a James paris lee designed magazine rifle .45-70. this was probably the best military rifle in the world at the time but was very expensive. they were built by Sharps and Remington:

the British empire wouldn't adopt the lee until 1888. The US didn't buy many M1879's due to cost though, and lack of need.

The shoulder rig for my Staccato finally arrived today. Ordered it on the 5th of July of last year. Apparently Kevin at Nightingale Leather has been having some bad chronic back issues and it has been negatively impacting his ability to stay on top of his work. Definitely worth the wait.

I've watched enough Bloke on the Range videos about the Enfield to pretty much realize that most of the fuddlore regarding those rifles is simply BS. It is pretty damn good fighting rifle. Much more ergonomic than a Mauser even in its SMLE variant, and when the N.04 adopted aperture sights there is no comparison which one is the better bolt action.

Why is it that in every crackhead gang member gun collection there are classics that I would love to own, like a fucking Luger, a Colt 1903, shit, I'd even take a few of those Iver Johnsons mixed in there.
I wonder what ethnicity the person that had the Hakenkreuz flags is. Because it seems like all the “chuds” in California moved to Idaho

I haven't seen it posted yet; Kahr (Auto-Ordnance) making $1600 M1 Carbines with MLOK equipped stocks. Given how bad some of their Thompsons are I don't have high hopes.

ive said it before and will say it again these AWBs are heinous totalitarian level shit yet the sheltered people that support them dont even use their fucking brains when they yap on about them. it's all based on feelings "ohmygawd we have to do something!!!111!1!!!" so they latch on to the imagery and most surface level shit rather than what actually causes mass shootings and violent crime. republicans don't do shit to reverse any of this when it's already been put into place and their solutions are often just as feels based as that of the democrats.
democrats: "just ban the guns"
republicans: "just ban people from being crazy"
you can't do either. neither "solution" works.
back to the AWBs there are a LOT of fudds in these states who have pre-ban mega illegal stuff in their basements that could get them decades in prison because they haven't checked up on the laws. in some of these states if an assault weapon or unregistered pistol is found in the home of someone on their fucking deathbed they have to take that person and arrest them for it. yet the fudds don't care even if you do tell them about the laws, "well im a good guy i do the right thing they won't take me". if you're a good guy and you do the right thing, great, good for you keep doing that but the unjust prosecution unfortunately won't care.
