I think people just want more compelling narratives. Comic book characters can easily be used to tell some of the best stories in pop culture, yet the MCU doesn’t even try. It is a string of movies made by people who openly seem to hate comic books and believe they are inherently stupid. Honestly, all I really want is a superhero plot that takes its story seriously.
If I had to make a comparison, look at the DCAU. The DCAU did the same thing as the MCU about 15 years earlier. It had the big crossover universe and everything, yet, even when it went bigger, still pulled off some of the best adult story-telling of its medium. The people who made those shows cared about comics and didn’t feel the need to make it a joke for general audiences. The MCU could only hope to pull off half of what it did in really creating an emotional core.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=qotqAHHVeTQI think this is more what people want out of comic stories on the big screen in general, yet it seems very few are ever able to do much. There are definitely directors passionate about comic stories, just look at Sam Rami or even Nolan, but it seems like most directors hate the medium and characters, and the MCU is the peak of that.
