This seems like a good place to ask instead of starting a new thread: I'm expecting to come into some money soon and I was gonna finally take the leap and buy a Steamdeck. I was holding out to see what the Switch 2 would be like but fuck that shit.

Is now a good time to buy a Steamdeck, or is Valve likely to announce a new model within the next 12 months, or are there better options (I've heard a lot of people talking about the ROG Ally)?

Valve is on record about not wanting to release a Steamdeck 2 until AMD releases its next APU. All of the current handhelds use the Z1 APU. The Z2 APUs only just got announced in January, so a Steamdeck 2 is a while away. I don't follow handheld news all that much so I don't know much more than that.

The ROG Ally and Steamdeck should perform the same, the main difference is there's a Steamdeck with an OLED screen and it uses Linux. You also run the risk of having to deal with ASUS customer support

Review with a direct comparison of the ROG Ally and the Steamdeck

The true patrician wisdom for as long as I've been into video games has been "buy a nintendo for their stupid party game exclusives, build a PC for actual gaming"
Sometimes I want Nintendo to put their games on PC because that’s where they would run best and be easiest to mod, then I remember how much their consoles make mustards seethe.

if you want to hold off for about a month they'll probably be discounted during the summer sale

I used to want Nintendo to go 3rd party, but now they're the only one I don't. Not only because it would help woke PS & XB, but also Nintendo can barely output games at a regular pace now, imagine needing to do Zelda with PS6 graphics. We'd get one every 20 years instead of every 6-10.

That's reasonable, just don't be shook when you realize that Morrowind is not nearly as helpful as Skyrim is when figuring out where to go. Other than that they are both excellent games.
There's mods to fix that. There's mods for everything, though. There's even an Oblivion mod to order a pizza from Domino's.
Strategy games are what made me make the leap years ago, I had an xbox one and a PC from 2005 and I was spending more time playing the original dawn of war on the shitty old PC.

Once you get a PC you should buy civ and some other strategy games.
I kinda already grew up on PC gaming. I alternated between consoles for more graphically intense games and PC for less graphically intense games. There's no way my parents would have allowed me to have a full on gaming PC. The gaming PC games were all rated M, anyway. This was the early 2000's-mid 2000's when system requirements went up every other week.

I got more into it in high school thanks to Skyrim mods. Since my laptop couldn't run Skyrim well, I got into abandonware games and Morrowind. Newest games that thing could run was the first FEAR and Oblivion. It could kinda run the first Witcher.

Seasonic is my go to brand. Never had an issue with them.

After working a real job for a year I bought myself a beefy PC and honestly I was pretty let down from modding. Though tbf, I tend to move from game to game rather than stick around. PC is more for Visual Novels and games that work better with a mouse.

Gaming laptops are a scam. I got a gaming laptop 6 months before spore came out and it was already too slow to run it on Max settings. Should always go for the big boy pc for anyone more serious than college level cad. Don't skimp on your motherboard or your CPU cooler
I've had my gaming laptop for more than 6 months and it can easily run Spore on max.

I can't speak to when valve is going to release the next steam deck but if you're getting that form factor you absolutely want a steam deck. The tight hardware + software integration is so important it really is make or break. Any other deck-type device is just a pile of parts they threw windows 10 on. Windows isn't going to sleep properly then have you back in the game in a couple seconds, the average fps might be a bit higher but the frame times will suck, etc. You want a deck.

Sidenote: I'm aware there's some company releasing a handheld with steam OS at some point but buying a handheld with steam OS that isn't from valve seems extra retarded.

can you recommend a good reliable power supply?
Honestly just get a name-brand one (corsair, seasonic, evga, etc.) with a 7+ year warranty and 80 plus rating. Also be aware: modular cables are NOT interchangeable between power supplies. Good way to fry your shit.

If you're still putting together a parts list we're missing critical information. Do you have a budget? What resolution monitor do you have/want? Storage requirements? Any other PC tasks besides gaming?

1. my budget is 1k min, with a max of 1.5k
2. I want to get a high refresh monitior. i don't need 4k, but maybe 1080p or something a bit higher than that if it exists
3. probably 1TB so I have enough for programs, games, and archiving media
4. probably some video editing, but nothing much other than gaming and web browsing

1k is definitely doable, but you might have to go and buy a second-hand card.

I've used 1440 27" and I liked it a lot. Didn't have performance issues at all and could max out settings on pretty much every game.

Just a 1TB SSD is a bit low. 2TB for an SSD is a lot more ideal and is only around $100. A 1TB HDD for archiving is also $40 roughly.

I probably should've asked this directly but are you alright with used parts? Most things like ram and cpu either work or they don't so saving money on used can be really worth it. Either way I think what you want is doable with your budget. Here's what I would suggest:

For your monitor I think you should shoot for a 32" 1440p 144hz and if possible good* HDR support. It's big enough that you won't need UI scaling and basically midrange with everything else. Don't be afraid to spend a decent amount on a monitor as it's the part you look at all the time. Also 32" might sound big now but you will get used to it and vill be happy.

For storage I'd recommend a 2TB ssd of some kind (probably an NVME now-a-days). It doesn't need to be pcie 5.0 or really even 4.0, those are just marketing gimmicks because most SSDs can saturate those links normally anyway. For archiving/movies/etc. get a pair of used 12/14/16tb drives from ebay and set them up in a mirror.

Ram I would say 64gb. The exact ram doesn't matter so much anymore but if you're getting ddr5 I'm given to understand that 2 sticks are easier to run at higher speeds so I would go to 32gb x2 and try for at least ddr5 6000. Also better for future upgrades.

Motherboard needs to just fit all your parts together. Correct cpu socket, ram spec, etc. Every motherboard will have one pcie x16 slot for your graphics card. This would also be the one thing I would buy new if possible. Used mobos from ebay are sus. Make sure it has 4 ram slots though. Upgrading memory is easy and it's always sad when you want more but only have 2 dimm slots.

I'm keeping myself away from making any super specific part recommendations because you never know what you might find a deal or bundle on mobo+cpu. But for high refresh rate gaming you want to get an AMD X3D cpu. You can try to go value (AM4 build, 5700x3d or 5800x3d, ddr4, no upgrades) or bank on future upgrades (AM5, 7600x3d or 7800x3d, ddr5, potentially a couple cpu generations of upgrades). If you want indepth cpu reviews see games nexus aka tech jesus. For cooler the one it comes with is fine, if you want quieter get a peerless assassin 120 SE for 25$ on ebay.

For graphics card we're looking at a midrange model. The new AMD ones are supposedly pretty good (again see games nexus for reviews). Also consider a 3060 or 3070 variation. Minimum 11gb of vram. 8 is not enough.

tl;dr:
cpu: $250-400, AMD X3D
ram: ~$125, 2x 32gb
mobo: ~$80-120, whatever works
psu: ~$100, 750-900w, name brand, 80+
monitor: $200-350, 1440p, 32", 144+ hz, HDR if possible. Check monitors unboxed.
gpu: $400-600, RX 9070/7900XT for AMD, or xx70/xx80 nvidia card. >11GB vram.
Storage: ~$100 2tb SSD, ~$150 2x used HDDs 10TB+

*HDR400 is not good. You want something with FALD (full array local dimming) with a least a couple hundred zones OR an OLED. Recommended reading for this on tftcentral and monitor recommendations on monitors unboxed. Monitors unboxed does a yearly best of video if you want the quick and dirty.

A 1TB HDD for archiving is also $40 roughly.
I don't mean to be rude but this is a retarded suggestion. They make 28TB drives now and you can get a new one in the low 20's for $200-250. A 1TB HDD is basically scrap at this point and they haven't made new ones that small in ages so it will be used and old. Plus at the size it might be SMR. Do not get a 1TB hdd (or anything under 10TB, really) unless it's free. And even then...

His ideal budget is $1000, and my guess is he just wants to archive images and clips for reposting. I wasn't gonna suggest spending money on bulk storage when it could go to other parts of a system.
Ram I would say 64gb
Unless you're playing flight sims or have the absolute worst tab management, 64GB is overkill. Even when I had 32 I was barely using 20.
shoot for a 32" 1440p 144hz
My only issue with this is that 32" 1440p looks a little blocky compared to 27" 1440p.

Forgot the case. $80-100 has some good options. Anything with a mesh front and fans included should be fine thermally though.

@Osama Bin Laden This is a reasonable concession to make; just IMO the $30-60 it saves isn't worth half the ram. Then again I do love my browser tabs.

I thought about mentioning it but I'm already just giving guidelines, basically any case will work, plus it's an aesthetic choice. @Osama Bin Laden pick case to taste with left over funds. Gamer's nexus has good case reviews, short version is get something with a couple fans and ideally a mesh front as @Bogan suggests.

It doesn't matter what he's doing. Suggesting someone get a 1TB HDD in 2025 is retarded. There's no corner cases or anything either, I'm sorry but it's just a bad recommendation.
