After watching practice, I got to wonder if this is where K-Mag and Haas have their "back to earth" moment?
I think the Haas thing is budgetary reality catching up with them. They made a good car but have zero spares, they have had one car written off entirely and multiple bits replaced/fixed already. This taking it relatively easy is very likely, as was said further up, them making sure they actually have cars to run.
I am trying to keep apprised of Haas news as I am hoping they score a podium this year. So concerning budget/upgrades I don't think they are in any different place than they were start of season, save for the destroyed SA car. Alonso as an example I think has already lost one of his 3 engines. So, I am not worried about financial end just yet. I just think they weren't intending to do much on upgrade front until the first race in Europe (Spain isn't it?).
There is no obvious and apparent reason why they would be so far behind all of a sudden and this shouldn't be the beginning of the fall. I am optimistic they will finish at least top 7, if not place or two better at end of year (assuming the Merc PU is also not up to snuff, 4 teams use it and I can see Haas ahead of Will & AM and maybe another team or two in final standings.
Anyway, Steiner has a
diff view on how to introduce upgrades (calls them overrated) so sounds like they have a methodical approach for introducing. Hope it pays huge dividends and is right way to go.
As for Friday performance, in addition to my thought about taking it easy due to lack of spare, apparently Kevin was quite ill Friday morning and that affected him a bit, he hopes to feel better tomorrow he said after practice. He said their high fuel was great, its low fuel balance that they need to work on.
And Mick had an "incurable" suspension issue and of course has never raced this track, certainly not in an F1 car, so he is still learning it.
They think if issues sorted out and Mick more confident and Kev feeling better they should be in the mix same as first two races.
Ham nearly hit wall in FP3 just now, Seb shortly after that did. But I think Merc are fucked this weekend again. Russell not tooo bad, but Ham looks like a fucking rookie out there! Hilarious!
EDIT-Think they axed one of the DRS zones on backside of track. I started watching late, but they just started talking about it on Sky
