So really we only gotta worry about sony taking down dawn? Cause i don't see any reason to take down sunrise unless they get really bored and wanna harm their reputation again
Prefacing this with the usual IANAL:

If we were operating from a common sense standpoint, then neither should face any C&D action considering they're objectively not competing with Sony's ability to sell and operate Destiny 2. Bungie ripped out nearly all of the first three years' worth of content from the game (to say nothing of the many seasons afterwards, but that's currently out of scope of Sunrise/Dawn), which is exactly what these projects are aiming to restore to a playable state. Since there's little to no overlap between the two games, then a reasonable stance would be to allow them to continue, letting the fans do the work that Bungie never bothered to do and allowing players who never got a chance to experience that content to do so. And it's good publicity in a time that Sony really needs it; even if they don't say anything, that's better than another reputational hit.

Furthermore, considering that most of this content was made F2P at some point, it's also not like Sunrise/Dawn are giving away content that could be paid for. In the initial F2P release, all of year 1's activities plus the annual pass content from year 2 was made F2P; later on, I believe the Forsaken campaign was briefly made F2P before it was removed, and Shadowkeep's campaign is now free. Again, there is a little bit of paid content overlap (dungeons and raids, seasonal content from seasons 8-11), but most of that can't be bought anymore, and in Sunrise's case, raids aren't worth attempting solo anyway. It would be laughable to claim that even a fully restored pre-Beyond Light build would be competing with the current state of the game when most of what's in there can't be accessed in the live game anymore.

That said, copyright law is notoriously retarded and biased in favor of the rights holder, and to my knowledge, there is nothing stopping Sony from firing off C&D letters at any time. This is kind of a gray area in my (uneducated) opinion. Usually, abandonware is left alone because there's little to nothing to gain from going after someone attempting to keep an abandoned game working, especially if it's not for sale anywhere anymore. But what about a case like Destiny 2, where the game is still being sold and operated, but huge swaths of it are no longer accessible to players? When over half the game is effectively abandonware, is there legal recourse to go after someone trying to resurrect it? Unfortunately, I think the courts would side with Sony in such a hypothetical; they still have the rights to the game and all its assets, and anyone else attempting to do stuff with it is not doing so legally.

But yes, if either of them were to be slapped down, I would place my bets on Dawn since it could more easily be argued that it's attempting to release a competing product using Sony's IP. Neither is fully safe, but Dawn is in a more precarious position. The biggest problem would be if these projects attempt to monetize in any way, as that's a surefire way to get on the lawyers' radar. If they keep it completely free, they may stand a better chance, but the threat is always there.

WE ARE BACK.

The Next Chapter for Bungie

Hey all, Poria and Josh here.

For those who don’t know us, I’m Poria Torkan, Bungie’s Studio Head, and I’m Josh Deane, Head of Product and General Manager of Marathon. Together, we are responsible for leading Bungie and shaping the future of our games.

Today, we want to talk candidly about where Bungie is, where Destiny and Marathon need to go, and how we intend to earn back your trust. This is not only an update on our immediate plans. It is the beginning of a more consistent conversation about the future of our games and our studio.

First and foremost, we recently sat down to talk through the current state of Bungie and share our vision for the future.

The video shares our perspective on where Bungie is today and where we want to go. Below, we’re adding more detail on what that direction means for Destiny, Marathon, and how we intend to communicate about our progress.

WHERE BUNGIE IS TODAY

Bungie has been creating games for over 30 years and we have welcomed the communities that have formed around them. Over the last few years, we lost sight of that, and there have been real consequences. We lost trust, we lost incredible colleagues, and we lost sight of what we should be prioritizing most, our players.

As a new leadership team, we must own that.

We aren’t just listening to feedback, we understand your disappointment. We are not asking you to trust what we say today. We know that trust must be earned through the quality of our games, the decisions we make, and how consistently we show up for our players.

DESTINY IS FOUNDATIONAL TO OUR FUTURE

Bungie would not be what it is today without Destiny and the vibrant community that has rallied around it for more than a decade. When we announced that Monuments of Triumph would be the final content update to Destiny 2, you responded in force. Your voices mattered, and the way you showed up made a real impact. You reminded everyone how much this world, its history, and its future still mean to you.

Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future. We have more stories to tell, new worlds to build, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe.

All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.

We want to return Destiny to its original promise, to recapture the qualities that have always made it special. The awe-inspiring mystery, meaningful discovery, and a community of Guardians coming together against impossible odds.

That begins with restoring important parts of Destiny 2’s history that players can no longer experience today.

We understand that removing these experiences had a lasting impact on player trust and enjoyment of Destiny. Destiny 2 is more than just the content itself. It is a place where players have built memories together, formed lasting friendships, and shared experiences that have stayed with them for years. We cannot change the decision we made, but we can acknowledge its impact and do the work to make it right by restoring these important parts of Destiny’s history.

As we shared in the video, we are beginning the work of bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game, where they will be available to all Destiny 2 players.

Bringing this content back is not as simple as restoring old files. Changes made to Destiny 2 since Beyond Light require us to update lighting, encounters, combatants, and other underlying systems. That work will take time, but it is necessary to ensure returning content meets the stability and gameplay standards of Destiny 2 today.

Our team is very excited to deliver this for you all and as they progress, we will share more details coming in the months ahead.

When we look to the future of Destiny all up this restoration is the first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve. We’ll have more details on our unvaulting efforts in the coming months, and we’re very excited to share more about our vision to celebrate Destiny’s legacy and build its future with you all as soon as we can.

MARATHON'S EVOLUTION

Marathon is an important part of shaping where Bungie goes next, but it was never intended to replace Destiny. The game launched to strong critical reception, and the players who embraced Marathon connected deeply with what makes it distinct. At the same time, it did not reach as many players as we had hoped, and we also know and understand that the game needs to evolve.

EN_16x9_Master_Image_Marathon_Symbiosis_Key-Art_Crops_LOGO_1920x1080.jpg

So, we're going to anchor on what makes Marathon special but evolve it beyond the genre constraints we placed on it. We're going to expand Marathon to a deeper survival experience, that gives players more ways to take on this dangerous alien world.

Through the remainder of Marathon’s first year, we will continue strengthening its combat, world, and competitive tension while giving players more agency in how they engage with the game. That means creating meaningful experiences whether you prefer cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, or the unpredictable tension of Marathon PvPvE.
It’s important to us that no matter your playstyle, or your skill level.... we find better ways to hear from you as we get back to where we need to be: making games you want to play.

As you heard last week from Del our Game Director, we still have a lot planned for our October Nightfall Refresh and Symbiosis update in December. You’ll hear more from the team later this week on our future vision for Marathon. Stay tuned.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE

This is an important time for Bungie. Our future depends on making clear choices about where we focus, delivering what we say we will, and being honest about our successes and failures. Stability doesn’t mean shrinking our ambition. It just means that we have to focus on the things you want to see from us, and making sure our vision matches our reality.

How we bring this new Bungie to life has to be through the spirit of putting players at the forefront of what we do. We have to find a way back to making games that we want to play, but with you at the center.

Trust won't be rebuilt through a single blog, video, or release. We also understand that trust extends beyond gameplay. It includes how we value your time, how we communicate, and how we action your feedback. Listening without action means nothing.

As we move forward, we'll measure ourselves against a few core commitments:

  • Build a stronger long-term future for Destiny, while honoring and restoring its past.
  • Evolve Marathon to grow our community and build a sustainable future.
  • Increase transparency around development priorities.
  • Communicate more consistently, especially when plans change.
We'll hold ourselves accountable to these goals and share what we're learning along the way. We are working with our Community team to establish a consistent way to report against these commitments and will share that approach alongside our next major updates for Destiny and Marathon.

KEEP US ACCOUNTABLE

We’ve made several changes with how we operate by simplifying our priorities, reducing competing initiatives, moving decisions closer to the teams building our games, and changing how we measure success to place greater emphasis on player satisfaction.

None of those changes earn trust on their own. What matters is whether they help us make better decisions, deliver stronger experiences more consistently, and communicate with greater clarity when plans change.

There is still a great deal of work ahead and challenges to overcome, but we believe deeply in this studio, our people, and the games we are building. But belief is not enough. It’s on us to prove progress through what we deliver. Thank you for continuing to challenge us, and for caring so deeply about the worlds we create. Keep holding us accountable. We are ready to do the work.

If they somehow manage to find the files for Red War and add it back in I might, maybe, perhaps, forgive them just a little… maybe…

All those fan projects are 100% getting killed now btw

Enjoy them while you can
The Project Sunrise lead has already responded:

WE DID IT

This may be the best possible outcome! Bungie has confirmed they will be bringing back the vaulted content:"As we shared in the video, we are beginning the work of bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game, where they will be available to all Destiny 2 players."What exactly this includes or does not include is yet to be seen, but we can assume that at least mainline content like campaigns, planets and raids will be back. I hope we will also see all the other content like strikes, adventures, seasonal missions, pvp maps as well as limited time events (dawning, fotl, ...)What this also means is that Destiny 2 is not dead, and there are or will be devs working on the game. This may mean new content for Destiny 2 in the future. I assume when destinations and raids are brought back we will see reprised loot for them at the least.

A WORD OF THANKS

I want to sincerely thank everyone who has joined me on this journey. Devs, Contributors, Mods, and anyone else! You people are amazing and I am thankful for all the support over the last weeks working on this project. I would like to think that the impact this project hat at least partially contributed to this outcome but we may never know.

TOWARDS THE FUTURE

Now that is has been confirmed that vaulted content will be brought back, Sunrise in its current form is mostly useless. We will take our time to rethink the direction of Sunrise and the next steps. While I will be slowing down the pace of development, I will not be going anywhere. The overall plan is to pivot into the direction of a modding tool for custom content.

TO BUNGIE

Thank you for making the sensible decision and bringing all this content back to us!Now that that has been confirmed, if you are unhappy with Sunrise existing please feel free to reach out and I will gladly take cease operation. Also if you need a developer with "experience" working on Destiny 2 to help bring back the old content or work on new content. Feel free to reach out!

I'll admit I never tired Destiny 2 out (despite getting a free copy from my Humble Bundle sub) because it pulled the FOMO Live Services shit and removed content or made it time limited. If they're bringing it all back, maybe I'll finally give it a try.

What kind of game is it anyway? I know it's a shooter, is it something akin to like, Borderlands or something?

The Project Sunrise lead has already responded:
Holy fuck. Like, I get it man, but Stan needs to stop deepthroating that corporate jackboot like it's his faggot lover's dick.

Reading that PR is like a shot of the good stuff direct to my veins, but fuck that. It's Bungie. They are telling us exactly what we want to hear, and thats why no one should be trusting them. Bungie is even worse than Todd Howard when it comes to telling people sweet, sweet lies, and the only reason they do the right thing is so that they can piss in your corn flakes in the future by giving you the minimum viable slop you purchase at 40$ a pop.

If true, and I'm not convinced Sony won't decide to pull the plug yet even if they had to approve this release, they are going to monetize this somehow.

Even if they aren't selling you stuff you already bought as fresh DLC, Sony may well be trying to salvage the IP, and have decided the only way to do this is by giving the reputation of the IP a glow-up. They don't want to wait a decade or two for the hate to cool; They probably want to be putting D3 in production yesterday, and unvaulting content is nothing more than putting some burn cream on the asses of fans that are still furious about the way bungie fucked them like they were a thai whore and left their body in a dumpster.

While I'm going to be as cautious with my optimism as possible, considering, y'know, everything...holy shit, we are so back.

I think they chose the correct place to start with this by going back to the old content and reintroducing it to the game, rather than going straight into releasing new stuff. Piling on new campaigns and missions and destinations when the foundation is as rocky as it has been for years would just be ignoring those fundamental issues all the more, at a time when they desperately need to build as much trust as possible. They also can't expect players to immediately start forking over money after all the bullshit they just pulled with canceling the game.

That said, there's a lot of work to be done, and I'm curious just what all that will entail. The announcement specifies destinations, campaigns, and raids, which would include the following at a minimum:
  • Destinations: The Farm, Titan, Io, Mercury, Mars, Tangled Shore
  • Campaigns: Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, Forsaken
  • Raids: Leviathan, Eater of Worlds, Spire of Stars, Scourge of the Past, Crown of Sorrow
But there's a lot of other stuff that would be nice to see return as well. The post-campaign Adventures from year 1, the Black Armory Forges, the Reckoning, the Menagerie, the Tribute Hall...to say nothing of all the seasonal stories and activities from years 3 and on. Oh, and the other vaulted Crucible/Gambit maps too. While I'd like all of that to return in some fashion, I'm not going to get my hopes up prematurely. This is obviously going to be a long process, regardless of whether they'd already started laying the groundwork before today's announcement or not. Anything is better than nothing at this stage.

Reading between the lines a bit further, I think they might be moving ahead with Destiny 3, or whatever they might call a new game, for any future game development. Note that the end of the announcement says that this is "the first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games." While that could just mean "new expansions for D2," it could also mean that they're planning on starting up a new game to build future content onto. What that could mean for the future of D2, who knows, but this is entirely baseless speculation of things that are at a minimum many months away, so I won't go any further.

They've got a long road ahead of them if they want to regain players' trust, but considering we were all basically resigned to the entire franchise ending on a cliffhanger a few months ago, we're already in a much better state than we were. Now it's up to Bungie to actually deliver for once. Against my better judgment, I'm hoping they do.

Its this type of game, and no why in hell they are gonna remove all this shit from Destiny2.

Bruh.

How many years of being raped by grind, nerfs for no other reason than Bungie hates you having fun, and IP dilution do people need before they learn their lesson? This is Bungie going "Oh, by the way, we are about to start fucking with the meta of MoT, which is the best update the game has had in years, and we know it."

They are compulsive about their inability to leave things that are fun alone.

They've got a long road ahead of them if they want to regain players' trust, but considering we were all basically resigned to the entire franchise ending on a cliffhanger a few months ago, we're already in a much better state than we were. Who the fuck cares? I mean, besides the midwits.

Look, Bungie studios lost more than half it's staff when they moved from Destiny to Marathon. That wouldn't be a bad thing if they were the right people; Only the gods know how many useless gender fuckwits did nothing but serve as an interface for other managerial interfaces, but there was no reason for anyone with an iota of talent to remain on RMS Bungie Studios when the ship hit the Pete Parsons automobile iceberg. Anyone who was someone left the studio, and the useless fuckwits who remain have been trying (and failing) to do something meaningful with Marathon.

The people who made cool stuff in Destiny are gone.

I am not convinced that there is anyone left capable of doing what the studio has just promised, and the studio is so gutted that if D3 bears the bungie name, it's a fucking skinwalker who's wearing the brand so they can knock on your door asking you to pretty please open your wallet for a friend.
