I have to wonder just how hard it would have actually been.
It could have been a case of the higher ups just not approving it. Project Sunrise is moving rapidly so far, with custom weapon implementation and restoration of missions being recently seen. From what we know Bungie appears to have not kept any working builds of pre-BL Destiny 2 since they weren't able to produce any evidence in the lawsuit regarding plagarism for the red war. So they must've had no working builds to produce because the higher ups didn't allows the devs to restore one, didn't care about restoring it, or however Bungie has archived the older content was incapable of being used to produce a working build. We won't know for sure unless a dev speaks out.

I think it's got to be the second one. They probably figured that the lawsuit wasn't that big a deal and that their defense could be argued through videos of the campaign, so they didn't see the point in going to the trouble of actually spinning up a pre-vault instance of the game, which would have involved setting up servers to handle the requests as well. Personally, I think they were right considering the lawsuit was solely concerned with the narrative and nothing more, so having a full recording of the campaign that someone else did should have sufficed. The judge apparently didn't see it that way, though (maybe because how could you know it was actually everything in the campaign), so that fucked with their defense. Maybe they wouldn't have had to settle if they'd just tasked some engineers to bash that together over a couple of days. Ironically, it was probably their penny-pinching that cost them more money.

I think the standard explanation for anything to do with Destiny can pretty much be boiled down to some combination of greed and sloth in management, coupled with a fair amount of ADHD. A lot more could have been done if they'd just focused more and actually bothered to put out things people wanted to see.
Do people really care about the story in Destiny 2?
I'm one of them, though definitely not all of it. Big sweeping conflicts and inventive sci-fi concepts? Hell yeah. Faggots bitching about muh feels over and over? Please, God, make it end. I hate that so much of the good in the story got overshadowed by all that faggot bullshit. Christopher Barrett was right, all we really wanted was something cool to fight and something cool to earn, but part of making that cool was having a good story to go with it. Again, unfortunately, that story frequently wasn't.

What does it mean that d2 modern is "edge of fate and beyond" but d2 classic is "everything currently in the game plus renegades"?
Besides dropping last gen consoles I'd probably prefer that if classic is everything hard cut at monument of triumph with the chance of vaulted stuff returning for good
That said, a D2 Classic/Modern split probably wouldn't have worked all that well even if they had gotten the go-ahead. While I appreciate the proposal to eventually bring back all the vaulted stuff and some method of allowing progress to carry over between the two, if it didn't launch with literally everything deleted, it would have been a hard sell for anyone. And as we're all well aware, management was practically allergic to spending money on development (that would take away from the office build and Pete's cars), so allocating resources to bringing old content up to date would never have been greenlit.
Give it back, give me back my copeium damn it!
They really should have dropped last-gen hardware a lot sooner, though.
Its not that bad and surprisingly doesn't crash doing GM renegade stuff with a stasis titan but i agree.

I liked some of the faggots bitching about muh feels arcs cause i liked some faggots but i also checked our after act 1 of echoes (didn't know who the conductor was till end of service) and apparently it got really bad outside of edge of fate

Am I understand correctly that Project Sunrise also works in Linux? It has instructions to built the project in Linux, but Install Instruction that Windows is required. I assume anticheat is not enabled, but not sure whether the client itself or anticheat prevents work in Linux.

There was no client side anti cheat until beyond light. It should just work under proton

It's just fucking hilarious to me that once some randoms on twitter cracked D2, all the sudden they can do things on Destiny that Bungie said would be too much work. Just goes to show how retardedly awful at game dev Bungie is.
To be fair, and this is going off of how I understand Project Sunrise to work, it's not exactly the same thing. From my understanding, Sunrise works by making a pre-Beyond Light version of the game files ignore any kind of server checks, letting it run the game without having Bungie's servers say "uh no that's the wrong version." You can load up any space or any mission and have it work without issue, and with some effort of matching scripts and spawns, full activities can eventually be rebuilt.

When Beyond Light released, the engine was updated in such a way as to make earlier content not immediately usable, so anything existing had to be ported to work in the new version of the engine. How much work that would entail, I don't know, but it obviously wasn't as simple as dropping it in and calling it a day; I think most of the challenge was in needing to rebuild all the lighting, but I'm sure there were other boondoggles. It wasn't an insurmountable task, I'm sure, but it must have been enough to where they basically never ported anything from the first three years of D2 that wasn't in that initial batch when Beyond Light launched. To my recollection, the only content that eventually made its way back in after that was The Whisper; Zero Hour; a few Crucible maps; two Gambit maps (one repurposed as an Onslaught map); and the Calus, Argos, and Insurrection Prime arenas in Pantheon.

So while the Sunrise devs are doing a tremendous job in resurrecting old content and I hope they're able to effectively rebuild everything that we lost, setting up triggers for scripts and spawns that they can easily see in the game world isn't as much effort as rebuilding entire swaths of the game for a new engine. That said, Bungie 100% could have devoted the time to bringing everything back, they simply chose not to. And I know dev resources are finite and all, but then I think about the studio construction and the incubation projects and fucking Marathon, and I can't help but wonder how much more Destiny we could've gotten if they weren't so retarded with their money.

ETA: I don't want to have sounded dismissive of the Sunrise team's efforts or imply they haven't been doing a lot of work, considering they've essentially been coding their own versions of dev tools from scratch and all. I'm sure it took a lot just to get to the point of even launching an old instance of the game, and the progress they've made since those early previews has been phenomenal. I simply wanted to bring up the fact that it's not the same as rebuilding content for the modern engine, something we probably would have seen a lot more of if it were easier to do (again, note how nearly all resurrected seasonal content comes from after Beyond Light's launch).

It casts no shadow, yet I know the day begins.
Not when the light crests the horizon, but when the dark first thins.
Osiris counted the units below. Count them too, and count them true. Six echoes, six hours, in the order they fell.
The sun keeps the apparent time that clocks will never tell.

For clarity's sake, Dawn and Sunrise are two entirely different and unaffiliated projects. Sunrise is single-player only with no plans for any server infrastructure, solely for exploration and playthroughs of pre-Beyond Light content (though not ruling out the potential of invite-only P2P multiplayer). Dawn is attempting to build private server infrastructure for the same build of the game to restore a full multiplayer experience.

Here's hoping that they don't catch the eye of Sony legal and end up having the whole thing get shut down, because all this video game archaeology is both fascinating and important. Like this video detailing the planned Mars expansion for D1 that got scrapped and repurposed into the Io patrol space, as well as a Pyramidion raid that might have been partially reused in The Desert Perpetual epic raid:

Project sunrise finally released scripting tools. We should start seeing some real traction there as people start playing around and knitting missions back together.

So really we only gotta worry about sony taking down dawn? Cause i don't see any reason to take down sunrise unless they get really bored and wanna harm their reputation again
