Not that I'm optimistic, but just for fun, let's take a look at the numbers and do a little guesstimation, shall we?

The Monument of Triumph update was definitely a shot in the arm for player numbers, though a fair amount of that was likely people coming in to reminisce and experience the game one more time before leaving it behind for good. Can't blame them, if a game's not getting any more updates then it's not really worth sticking around. The day of the update saw over a million unique players signing in, which has dropped down to about 300k daily in about three months, and will likely continue to dwindle as players move on. Where it might settle at, it's hard to say; during the Renegades doldrums, it hovered around 200k for about four months, but that was under the assumption more game was coming. Without that, it could just keep falling.

Since Marathon doesn't have a publicly accessible API, or at least not to as great an extent as Destiny's, we can't get exact player numbers, but we can make an estimate. It's been reported (and reportedly confirmed) that Marathon's userbase is skewed heavily towards PC, at something like 75% PC to 25% across both consoles. Destiny is reportedly more evenly distributed; for simplicity's sake, we'll say 50/50. Comparing daily peak concurrent Steam players with total daily players, it's something like ten times difference; assuming PC is half the total playerbase, then the total unique players would be about five times the total peak concurrence. So for example, if Steam reported a max of 50k players one day, then total max would be 100k across PC and console, and the total unique would be about 500k. (This number varies somewhat, but it's relatively consistent.)

Looking at Marathon, Steam has been peaking at or under 4k concurrent players daily for the last couple of weeks. Assuming a 75/25 split, that would come out to roughly 5k max concurrence across all platforms. Applying the same 5x multiplier, we'd get 25k unique players daily over recent weeks. Compared to the 300k D2 is still getting on the regular...yeah, that's pretty bad. Even worse when you consider that Marathon never had much of a playerbase to begin with, and if you zoom out enough, the player count looks pretty much like a horizontal line.

Again, I'm not optimistic for some sudden turnaround in Bungie or Destiny's fortunes, but you do have to wonder if there isn't at least one person at Sony who's looking at these numbers and questioning why the game they shut down all development on is still outperforming their cool hip new live service game to such a huge extent.

It wouldn't be surprising at all if Destiny is bringing in more money right now through silver purchases than Marathon.

Yesterday while raiding the Sony State of Play, Aztecross mentioned that according to his "palm reader", the community's actions in demanding more Destiny have already resulted in some postitive actions being taken at Bungie in regards to it, and that an announcement should occur within the next 3 weeks, and that if it doesn't, it's probably over. This would be before the next Marathon season. I know that it's a Youtuber likely baiting, but he does probably still have some contacts at Bungie. Time will tell.

If it's not D3, it's not worth it. Going back to D2 would just be cruel, artificially keeping a terminally retarded and gay gremlin alive, making it dance for a bunch of addicts, even though it longs for death and only wants the pain to end.

Wouldn't a return to developing D2 mean having to eventually sunset more stuff to keep the game from not exploding? lmao.

If Destiny does return, how do you guys think it should be done. Should it be a:
-Continuation of D2's story
-Time skip
-Prequel, potentially during the Dark Ages.
-Remake
-Something else?

They should just do a time skip if they decide to do a sequel. There's so much retarded shit and loose threads/ruined potential that it's better to leave most of it behind or find a way to wipe the slate clean.
My guess is a Destiny Classic of some kind
This would be a acceptable stop gap between what we have now and D3. It might be fun to sherpa again.

At most all sony would really need to do is get a team to work on readding as much vaulted stuff as they could into d2 and finish up old chicago

Either continuation or time skip.
Time skip preferred since it would mean less chances to fuck up characters i already like and they can do some nostalgia baiting ala dark souls 3 by having us return to areas but now in the future
They had a pretty good pipeline for development during the pandemic with work from home too. Imagine how much d2 could have been funded from that fucking building

They can easily do something like time skip. I've watched mynameisbyf video (well, listened, he is my personal brand of sleeping pills) and he had idea of broken timeline, caused by Maya's to hold on time period where her wife is alive, I guess, something like she pauses time at some point and breaks timeline for others. Anyway, I believe it allows, with smart writing, to readd old content but with some improvements like we rebuild old timeline in the new time line or something like that.

Also I've realized that Destiny's final (at least for now) villain is a crazy lesbian, as stereotypical as it sounds. Meanwhile the fag couple of Osiris and Saint is chill and adequate.

Source for this is here, a fairly reliable leaker so this is probably credible stuff. If legit, then it really just points to how fucked development had gotten that they were throwing all these ideas around hoping something would stick. It also suggests that they knew even back then that the game was probably not going to last much longer and that Sony was probably going to can it soon, but even then they still thought they could get one more expansion out the door. Goes to show how late a lot of these plans changed, and it does explain why we never got that roadmap; when nobody at the studio even knew what the plans were from day to day, there was no way to compile them for us to see.

That said, a D2 Classic/Modern split probably wouldn't have worked all that well even if they had gotten the go-ahead. While I appreciate the proposal to eventually bring back all the vaulted stuff and some method of allowing progress to carry over between the two, if it didn't launch with literally everything deleted, it would have been a hard sell for anyone. And as we're all well aware, management was practically allergic to spending money on development (that would take away from the office build and Pete's cars), so allocating resources to bringing old content up to date would never have been greenlit. They really should have dropped last-gen hardware a lot sooner, though.

That said, if the Sunrise guys are already getting old missions fully working with proper scripting and dialogue with nothing like the tools that the devs had, I have to wonder just how hard it would have actually been. Granted, there's a difference between "figuring out which scripts need to be called and adding in references to them" and "rebuilding levels and missions to work in a different engine version entirely," but if they really wanted to, they 100% could have done it. (Especially if they'd dropped last-gen support years ago.)
