A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I must confess: I once voted Green party in a local election because the chap representing them knocked on my door. He said if he won by one vote he'd buy me a pint so I did. Still went Labour anyway, as expected, but still. It appears a significant chunk of Green party voters went Reform for whatever reason. Regardless, the swing from Labour is massive. The boys teams are roughly the same level as women's national levels, usually their games are relatively equally matched with the women winning roughly half and losses are usually more balanced, like 2-1, rather than total annihilation. But occasionally a boys team will be on excellent form (especially f they have a future male star) or the women's will be having a terrible night, and there is a huge defeat like this one, and that's when it gets shared everywhere.

I’m not a fan of women’s football but I think this is a side effect of this weird ‘everyone’s equal’ stuff.
Sport is fun and beneficial as it is. Football is played at playground level, fat dad pub team level, all the way up to the premier league and world level. Everyone should be able to play, even if they’re not great. They should play against their peers.
I think that goes for any sport or pastime. I have a couple of things I enjoy doing and I’m crap at them, if you ranked me against the world best, and ok if you ranked me against my peers.
Nobody ever had an issue with this up until recently. The idea that you’d play a pub team against Man City and expect them to do well would be seen as a bit cruel. Women’s leagues ditto. Women are only able to achieve that kind of parity with men in a very few things like long distance swimming.
I just find it curious, it’s the natural extension I suppose of this ‘there is no difference between us’ mentality that’s been pushed. When you see stuff like this you see just how big the gap is. And you see how much that idea has been pushed at us all. Was this the vanguard for the tranny stuff, I wonder? Softening people up for the Troon invasion?

If they did, that was stupidly needless. These national women/school boy matches are completely routine. Sometimes routine matches turn into complete routs. In the last 4 years, 2 premiership matches ended 9-0. And as an example of how these things are sometimes just about a good/bad day for a team, Nottingham Forest recently lost a match 5-0, then won their next match 7-0.

It just happens sometimes. Women's teams getting overran by a boys team, will occasionally happen when that's who they mostly play against. It's more than possible that it happens the other way around too but we never hear about it, because elite women beat school boys, just sounds mean. Whereas elite women thrashed by schoolboys, sounds like the women were overestimating their abilities and got put in their place, so is funny.

Lol, maybe they need to go down to under 12s boys teams to achieve parity? I'm not going to address the rest of the cope in your two posts, but the fact that these matches happen at all (and according to you, are "routine") tells you everything. Even if there's not enough "elite" women's teams for them to practice against (which I doubt), there's plenty of lower league men's teams for them to take on, why don't they?

Lucerne aren't even a good youth team, we're not talking Barca or Man City or something. It's a bunch of 13-14 year olds from Lucerne, most of them are like a good foot shorter than the adult women they're facing.

Actually I'll address this while I'm here. No, no it wasn't "stupidly needless" of them. It was absolutely essential for them to cover this kind of this up because it goes against the narrative. The one that says women's football is just the same as the men's game in terms of skill, that the women's tournaments should have the same prominence and media coverage, and that consequentially these ladies teams should have equal pay to the men's teams. That narrative can't survive such obvious evidence as this, to the extent that I don't know why you're even trying tbh.
