British MP shot and stabbed - Confirmed dead

Cliff notes version:

Leeds based MP Jo Cox was holding her usual surgery at a library in her constituency when a disturbance was heard outside, she found two men in an altercation and attempted to intervene.

One man pulled a gun from his bag and shot the MP twice before fleeing the scene. A 52 year old man has since been arrested.

This is all that has been confirmed and both sides of the referendum campaign have agreed to suspend their battle buses and general campaigning for the day.

Sordid Rumour Mill Version:

One eye witness claims to man screamed out "Britain First". This is being repeated by people who weren't actually present and was even Tweeted out by Maria Eagle, another Remain MP who was some 70 miles away when this situation occurred.

The BBC is refusing to repeat the man shouting out this phrase due to lack of solid confirmation.

Another claims he was "kicking her continuously on the ground" before walking away from the scene "slowly and calmly" nobody stopping him because he was armed.

Tin Hat Brigade is already claiming it was some sort of establishment false flag operation to try and tarnish the current Leave lead in the polls after all other efforts appear to be failing.

It's also become clear that he was increasingly mentally imbalanced in the days before. He went into a nearby mental health drop in centre where a member of staff stated he was looking troubled. It was the first time he had stepped foot in there and had walked past it for years stating that he "never had the courage" to do go in.

It's entirely possible that his detour into the health centre was a final cry of help.
 
Well not like he's dead or anything, we'll find out soon enough if he is deemed mentally competent enough to face trial for his crime. Not like you need to be literally mental to stab and shoot someone to death, just metaphorically. It's evident (and disturbing) how easy that line is to cross for so many. All you need is proper "motivation".

Two police doctors said he seemed fine to be charged. Then when he was put in the dock he gave his name as "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain".

Deputy Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot has now ordered a full psych evaluation to properly determine his mental competence.

He reminds me of nothing more than John Hinckley, who tried to assassinate Reagan. He's clearly deeply disturbed and reading too much into his motives is a recipe for delusion.

They should be. This is a case that invites something on the order of a M'Naghten defense. Dude is clearly bugfuck.
 
I'm late to the party, what with being a U.S. citizen, but I kept seeing Jo's name invoked during the Brexit debacle & had to look her up.

God, what a waste. By all accounts she was a great politician, a sincere woman who wanted the best for her people. The world needs more people in government like her.

My deepest condolences to her family & all my British mates.
