Cliff notes version:

Leeds based MP Jo Cox was holding her usual surgery at a library in her constituency when a disturbance was heard outside, she found two men in an altercation and attempted to intervene.

One man pulled a gun from his bag and shot the MP twice before fleeing the scene. A 52 year old man has since been arrested.

This is all that has been confirmed and both sides of the referendum campaign have agreed to suspend their battle buses and general campaigning for the day.

Sordid Rumour Mill Version:

One eye witness claims to man screamed out "Britain First". This is being repeated by people who weren't actually present and was even Tweeted out by Maria Eagle, another Remain MP who was some 70 miles away when this situation occurred.

The BBC is refusing to repeat the man shouting out this phrase due to lack of solid confirmation.

Another claims he was "kicking her continuously on the ground" before walking away from the scene "slowly and calmly" nobody stopping him because he was armed.

Tin Hat Brigade is already claiming it was some sort of establishment false flag operation to try and tarnish the current Leave lead in the polls after all other efforts appear to be failing.

Nah, UKIP have distanced themselves vastly from Britain First, and if this bloke is a garden variety nutter, it's more likely to hurt the Tories.

Yea the main party like Nervous Nige have but the local party members and a lot of the supporters are former supporters of more hard right parties, and get a lot of votes from that end of the spectrum when there isn't a UKIP candidate.

In fairness, Jean Claude Juncker posted a tweet stating his apologies and hew as flooded with Leave people calling him a cunt and an opportunist. Which I feel is a little unfair.
It's unfair for both sides. Until we know why the guy did this, people on both sides are just fighting over Jo's corpse. I know it's impossible, but can't we just wait until she's been put respectfully to rest before we turn her into a political fighting point?

You seem to be asking a lot from these arseholes. In their opinion, anyone who doesn't agree with them is Hitler incarnate, either you believe in some sort of Fascist Kingdom, where minorities would be purged on a weekly occurence, or you want to create the Fourth Reich in Europe and give up everything to do with political control.

What a load of cunts.

A surprising number are former Labour Voters actually, especially that far north. There's some debate ongoing within UKIP as to whether to continue along "blue UKIP" or to become "red UKIP" in order to better capitalize on the softer Labour Vote.

I really wish people would, tbh. But apparently not. The Guardian has been rather lurid with their rapidly rushed out opED, and people were tweeting at Junker being an opportunist for what is clearly a tragedy which transcends the issue of the referendum.

I shudder to think what the hell Question Time tonight is going to be like.

This, sadly, is the whole of the British Twitterati at war with each other and both proving what vile idiots they all are. Especially with both sides bristling over what should really be an issue to come together on.

For such as a bright and brilliant MP to have been cut down in this way by an apparently mentally ill man is a tragedy enough.

People selfishly picking over her corpse like vultures is a greater one.

The bbc has cancelled all referendum programming until the weekend including QT. Which is imo a tasteful and appropriate decision.
Yeah, David Cameron called for it and I'm pretty sure most of Parliament agreed with him. It's just the polite thing to do and I'm glad they did it.

Yea that's a real mark of respect, they are determined to not let this become political in anyway anyone could profit from. It's not often I'm proud out our politicians but in this case I am.

You should be. Ours have been an absolute disgrace in the face of recent events.

It reminds me of the death of Charles Kennedy- our MPs are fucking hopeless most of the time but they are sincere in their desire to serve and do, on the whole, have a certain minimal respect for each other and do treat each other's deaths with a modicum of solemnity.

This is awful :(

People like her are the best politicians. If younger left voters were more like her, instead of reverting to aggressively calling anybody who they disagree with a stupid racist the world would be a better place.

They always have done, even supposed parliamentary "enemies" tend to at least recognize one another as kith and kin. For all the rhetoric they don't actually dehumanize each other.

The whole situation has been a tragedy and it's a good idea to take a break and allow people to mourn if only for a couple of days. It lets the tragedy of Jo come to the front of people's minds and to put aside what had become quite a heated, but civil enough, debate.

I actually wonder if it won't do both sides some good to tone down the vitriol and think a bit more with their answers than scoring cheap points.

Maybe I'm cynical but I'm afraid there's only one response to this wish.

:story::story::story:

No fucking chance.

They've already delayed the broadcast of Question Time (which will have been filmed Wednesday night/This afternoon).

At the bare minimum I would expect a minute's silence on "the big one" at Wembley which is on the 21st and is being broadcast live.
