Cliff notes version:

Leeds based MP Jo Cox was holding her usual surgery at a library in her constituency when a disturbance was heard outside, she found two men in an altercation and attempted to intervene.

One man pulled a gun from his bag and shot the MP twice before fleeing the scene. A 52 year old man has since been arrested.

This is all that has been confirmed and both sides of the referendum campaign have agreed to suspend their battle buses and general campaigning for the day.

Sordid Rumour Mill Version:

One eye witness claims to man screamed out "Britain First". This is being repeated by people who weren't actually present and was even Tweeted out by Maria Eagle, another Remain MP who was some 70 miles away when this situation occurred.

The BBC is refusing to repeat the man shouting out this phrase due to lack of solid confirmation.

Another claims he was "kicking her continuously on the ground" before walking away from the scene "slowly and calmly" nobody stopping him because he was armed.

Tin Hat Brigade is already claiming it was some sort of establishment false flag operation to try and tarnish the current Leave lead in the polls after all other efforts appear to be failing.

Well, the rumour mill is gonna be turning faster than a Catherine wheel, no doubt about that. Who's going to try and milk this the hardest?

The BBC seems to be treating the alleged statement being shouted out by this guy with a large dose of skepticism, especially as other eye witnesses are saying the man was already fighting another and Cox left a nearby cafe in order to try and calm the situation.

Any statements on the "Britain First" shouting seems to be coming from second hand sources and general fire lighting from Twitter. No other MP bar Maria Eagle has re-tweeted this and I suspect the tweet will get pulled before long. No other MP nor the BBC are repeating it due to lack of credible sources.

So far they have had one eyewitness (the cafe owner) on who speaks of the man shooting Cox three times before pulling out a large hunting knife and flailing it around, which appears to have been backed up by the nearby street market hearing "multiple pops". The man either didn't say anything or the cafe owner obviously wasn't paying attention to that.

The gun description continues to pinwheel from either being a WW2 gun, or some sort of home made weapon.

Right now on the BBC is a basically endless line of MPs and tweets being displayed from all sides of the campaign showing how shocked they all are this has happened.

Cox has been a driving force in the north for the Remain camp, and her own work as an aid and charity worker before she became an MP is the thing of legend.

Cox is a principled, clever new MP who is respected by every side of the house and is noted for getting questions so early in her career in PMQs. As noted by one MP earlier "When she speaks, everyone quietens down to listen."

It seems, on the surface, that this was an altercation in the street that went even more wrong by a local MP trying to speak to calm a situation and became subject to the attack.

That's my opinion on it as well, but I suppose we'll have to wait and see instead of jumping to conclusions....unlike CERTAIN unscrupulous individuals in this country.

John Mann, one of the most prominent Labour Leave MPs is currently on speaking and sounds like the wind has been removed totally from his sails. He really cannot believe that this has happened to an elected representative that he is speaking of with genuine affection. Mann seems to stumble and appear near speechless at times, something which sounded like he was barely keeping it together and on the verge of bursting into tears.

This is the general tone running right now and the suspension of the campaigning is definitely the correct call. Cameron is no longer holding the rally tonight in Gibraltar and Boris has stopped his tour down on the South Coast.

BBC has just stated that only one witness claims the attack was directed at her, while others speak of the altercation that was already ongoing when Cox intervened, which seems to lend more weight to it being an intervention gone wrong.

Fuck this is bad, Gun crime is rare enough in the UK but for it to happen when a MP was trying to stop a fight in her consituancy is beyond awful from all accounts she's more than a decent politician she's a decent human being.

Also Maria Eagle (well for the south liverpool ward anyway) saying that "Britain First" line is fucking awful if it's unfounded, she's my local MP and generaly sucks.

Terrible news and it's fucking sick that people are already trying to politicise it.

It was a white guy. There are pictures of him being arrested.

When even Nick Griffin is tweeting out that what happened was bad... you know how bad the situation is.

=========

The man has been named locally as 52 year old Tommy Mair.

West Yorks police has yet to actually name them. (But is due to hold a press statement at 5pm)

The Police Forensics team is now at a nearby house.

The chain of events appears to be solidifying; That the altercation between two gents was already occurring before Cox tried to intervene and was shot and stabbed.

One commentator says that, if the weapon was improvised, there is a higher hope to someone surviving multiple gunshots.

Chris Grayling has been on and was asked by the BBC if they felt the referendum becoming so bitter has become a factor.

This was politely and firmly rebuffed due to them not knowing any real facts and this campaign being no different than the same lively debates that tend to occur during a General Election.

Indeed I can see this being a shock to the political establishment in the UK considering we have only ever had one serving PM assassinated (Spencer Percival), and the attempts on other politicians are rare it's going to have a effect.

That's debatable, it's true that most improvised weapons are less accurate an reliable (and mostly powerful due to gas seal issues common in improvised firearms) but it's the projectile an where it hit's that matters. But let's just hope that she's got lucky and it's some crappy aged ammunition an she makes a good recovery.

The shooter, the other guy apparently has been taken to hospital with minor injuries.

I'm glad they got the cunt quickly, any idea if it was at the sceen or not far away?

I've noticed that a lot of people on the news are (somewhat unusually) referring to her in the past tense, as if she has already died. Could there be an embargo on the news?

I had noticed this as well from some. It is possible she won't continue as the local MP while she recovers. I can't see them not announcing it as quickly as possible considering how much the news is following this right now.

If she is dead, we may see this happen with the police press conference which is about to start.

Not far from the scene apparently.

As for the improvised weapon, multiple eyewitnesses are claiming he shot her in the face.

I'm not sure on policy regarding hospital stays, but I imagine she'll still be the local MP, if Ms Cox is dead, then a by-election would be called for after the referendum.

She has died, just as we predicted.

Now just been confirmed by acting Police Chief Dee Collins.

Jo Cox has died due to the injuries sustained.

EDIT: This is incredibly saddening and quite depressing to have occurred today. Truly a great person has passed on.
