They screwed up Shadow of the Colossus as well, its just not as apparent unless you are an uber autist about the original game. They filled the forbidden lands with lush foliage and grass, they removed the overbearing white light and washed out colors and replaced it with hollywood green/teal same as demon's souls, and they removed the slight stylization on the characters so they just look ugly. At least the soundtrack is intact because they got the original composer back. The Last Guardian is what the remake should have looked like.
The whole point of the secret garden on top of the temple was that it was the only place in the forbidden lands with lush foliage and life, everywhere else is supposed to be dead and barren and dull. Bluepoint couldn't understand that simple design decision and made everything as lush and full of life as the garden. It really exemplifies the importance of an art director, all their art is good and technically competent, but the direction sucks and has no purpose or meaning.
Oh, that's very true. I forgot how densely they populated the map with trees and whatnot. The top of the temple doesn't feel nearly as special in contrast to the rest of the world. There didn't need to be literal forests between colossi.
Bluepoint certainly approaches projects with a "we can do better" mindset. I think they chalk up all barren landscape/structures to technical limitations and ignore the thematic purpose it may have served.
Another thing I remember about the SotC remake is the "realistic lighting" sapping that
haunting feel the original had. Why does every remake have to strip the style away for the sake of realism?
I don't want think about what they're probably doing to Bloodborne. The environment was so packed with detail that it makes the most sense for Bluepoint to remake it, because they're detail fags, but they'll screw up the lighting by taking all the punch out of it, they'll make me choose between body type A and B, and they'll probably make Adella the Nun black or romani or whatever, lol.
The only thing about emulating bloodborne is losing the online stuff. When I was still playing bloodborne I'd pretty much just stopped playing the main game and was just dicking around invading games in that area where there's poison gas clouds or something and powerful monsters and you have to run from safe spot to safe spot. That shit was fun as fuck just fucking with people who are trying to play the game. I spent hours just invading people and killing them as they tried to get through that section. It reminded me of counter-op mode in perfect dark.
Though, bloodborne's online still wasn't as cool as the first Dark Souls online stuff. That game still has the best online stuff I've ever played in a game. The way it was all done was cool as fuck and playing the game without it would kind of suck.
I had a ton of fun with the online too. People actually fought you in Bloodborne, while Dark Souls III was overwhelmed with annoying cunts who'd run away and try to goad you into trash mobs. At least that was my experience. Granted, I never got too into PvP in either of the games, but helping people out was my favorite way to farm echoes.
Thankfully, it's not entirely out of the question yet. There are emulators that support online components, and setting up connections with friends may be feasible someday. The community behind this game's so dedicated I wouldn't be surprised if there was something tangible down the road.
