Yeah it only became "true" in the last chapter, but the writing is so fucking horrible that the plot couldn't end with "Erin destroys the world" and the only way to stop that was to make him a pathetic fuckboi.
There was never some magical plan that was in place, it was one random plot point to the next.
The thing is, they had to expand. You can't have 139 chapters of them just fighting mindless titans unless you just want to become a monster of the week series. The intrigue is what drew people to aot and it needed a payoff. Also known as the Naruto formula. Start off with grounded battles with melee weapons and fists. Jutsus and magic that does small damage and might only wound and not kill. A few fireballs and are out of energy. Strategy. Tactics. Low amount of chakra or energy pools even for powerful characters. Secret and forbidden techniques like shadow clones that are impossible to use for all but the most skilled ninjas. Shadow clones when used often can drain your energy and kill you. Only one ninjas in history can use water techniques without being near water. Straightforward story. Countries are at war. They use ninjas and child soldiers in a 'Hunger Games' or 'Battle Royale' to avoid an all our war.
I think Isayama and his editors were making too much money with the story and just kept expanding it until it just collapsed on itself. And it seemed like they had no idea where to go once they got beyond the walls and off of the island.
The issue isn't bloat, the issue is that Isayama wrote himself into a corner. He wrote a story where an eren victory is innevitable but didn't want his story to end with the genocidal anti hero destroying the planet, so he just scrambled toogether an ending that made no sense purely for the purpose of averting it.
Having eren just win would have been a fine ending, endings don't automatically have to be happy, just a consistent conclusion to the story and nothing is more conclusive than the world being destroyed. Plus it doesn't assassinate anyone's character.
You do seeing as you're on a thread discussing the qualities of the ending. His (original) plan was consistent and would have worked fine for a few centuries until the eldians needed to expand outside paradis into the destroyed world.Literally who cares?
Eren's motives don't really matter because his plan was still incredibly fucktarded.
Worse than hiruzu, but considerably better than a half assed genocide or whatever the actual ending ended up being.
