sounds like he always intended to do the twist ending because that's what all the cool kids do but he held back on the character assassination a bit because he knew everybody was going to shit on him for it.
 
I always forget AoT was a thing until this thread gets new posts. It is really something seeing AoT pretty much vanish from the public conscience despite how big it was a just a decade ago.

I am a sucker for “normal, well-adjusted if conceited man becomes heroic in spite of wanting comfort”. Jean is the Caiaphis Cane of AoT. He wants to get away from danger, but has to go towards it because it creates problems if he doesn’t.
