Yeah it only became "true" in the last chapter, but the writing is so fucking horrible that the plot couldn't end with "Erin destroys the world" and the only way to stop that was to make him a pathetic fuckboi.

There was never some magical plan that was in place, it was one random plot point to the next.
Also known as the Naruto formula. Start off with grounded battles with melee weapons and fists. Jutsus and magic that does small damage and might only wound and not kill. A few fireballs and are out of energy. Strategy. Tactics. Low amount of chakra or energy pools even for powerful characters. Secret and forbidden techniques like shadow clones that are impossible to use for all but the most skilled ninjas. Shadow clones when used often can drain your energy and kill you. Only one ninjas in history can use water techniques without being near water. Straightforward story. Countries are at war. They use ninjas and child soldiers in a 'Hunger Games' or 'Battle Royale' to avoid an all our war.

I think Isayama and his editors were making too much money with the story and just kept expanding it until it just collapsed on itself. And it seemed like they had no idea where to go once they got beyond the walls and off of the island.
The thing is, they had to expand. You can't have 139 chapters of them just fighting mindless titans unless you just want to become a monster of the week series. The intrigue is what drew people to aot and it needed a payoff.

The issue isn't bloat, the issue is that Isayama wrote himself into a corner. He wrote a story where an eren victory is innevitable but didn't want his story to end with the genocidal anti hero destroying the planet, so he just scrambled toogether an ending that made no sense purely for the purpose of averting it.

Having eren just win would have been a fine ending, endings don't automatically have to be happy, just a consistent conclusion to the story and nothing is more conclusive than the world being destroyed. Plus it doesn't assassinate anyone's character.
Literally who cares?

Eren's motives don't really matter because his plan was still incredibly fucktarded.
You do seeing as you're on a thread discussing the qualities of the ending. His (original) plan was consistent and would have worked fine for a few centuries until the eldians needed to expand outside paradis into the destroyed world.

Worse than hiruzu, but considerably better than a half assed genocide or whatever the actual ending ended up being.

Expanding is one thing. They make it outside of their district first towards the interior. Then they make it outside of the walls. Then finally to the ocean. Then across the ocean. This is all fine. It all made sense. We are just like the characters in that we all want to see what is beyond the walls. Beyond the oceans. We find out that some infiltrators made it into the walls from beyond the ocean even. We need to know where they came from as well. And where the titans came from and why some titans are mindless and others are normal.

What started going off of the rails were the alien centipedes. Coordinates and paths. Royal bloodlines. Time traveling and influencing past and future events. Titan revivals. And power creep that became breakneck and light-speed levels. I was looking for grounded explanations for titans and the walls and how no one had memories of the outside. Less magical more scientific. The first couple story arcs were more realistic and grounded. Even later big reveals were things like a photograph in a basement. They spent a ton of time literally just planning on getting back to the basement of their home. It was a very focused and small scale narrative. Where massive painstaking details were spent getting us to find out that cameras exist somewhere outside of the walls. I wanted less fantastical payoffs for the early mysteries like that. Not alien centipedes and cursed bloodlines and whatever nonsense the story bloated to. Paths and coordinates.

I agree that the only way for Eren to not genocide the entire world was for him to decide on his own against it. He was simply too powerful compared to the other titans and armies. So no one should have been able to stop the rumbling except for Eren. Or the other way to stop him, though this is poor writing, would be to lower his power level or just plot armor some other character, and have them kill Eren when his guard was down. But he was always intended to be written to be powerful enough to be a serious worldwide threat. And to carry out the first part of his genocide to the point where his friends would need to stop him. So that they could have a moral victory and be saviors of the world and be accepted into the world. That was the ending always. Eren becoming the monster titan whose hand reached over the wall in the first chapter. Same imagery.

I do not believe that genocide was the original ending. The original ending is likely the 'Naruto' ending. Where you keep the cycle going and introduce the next Eren or Boruto character. So they have the kid with the backpack venture into the tree to possibly revive the titan powers. Opening up another comic series and more money. And they try to keep as many fan favorite characters alive in the end as possible. Naruto was also hugely about breaking the cycle of violence and overcoming revenge obsession. But then became about planet sized jutsus and selling merchandise.

The Attack on Titan story was always about those inside the walls saving the world from the things that they hated most. Titans. The story begins with titans threatening the lives of everyone inside of the walls and threatening the end of all life. The giant hand reaching over the wall. The last arc is the titans inside of the walls threatening all of humanity. Only this time it is the humans outside of the walls that are under threat from titans. And the hands of Eren are destroying their cities and homes. The parallel is obvious. And both times those inside of the walls saved everyone. They save themselves from titans and rebuilt the walls. Then saved the entire world and freed themselves as well.

The retcon ending would be the additions after 139 where Isayama and the editors completely lost their minds and tried to backpedal or save things as best that they could. And failed of course. Having the world bomb the island made Eren seem even more correct and an even more pathetic character. And his sacrifice pointless and meaningless until you get to the kid walking into the tree. Setting up that sweet Boruto sequel for even more money.

So that they could have a moral victory and be saviors of the world and be accepted into the world. That was the ending always.
Here's the problem with this, everyone agrees that everything right before the ocean (or if you want to be anal, right before the basement) is masterfuly and tightly writen right?

I refuse to believe that the same person who wrote everything leading up to the basement wanted the ending to his story to be "Hitler actually did the holocaust on purpose so a plucky team of germans would stop him and the world would forgive germany for ww1."

The writing quality between these two is so fucking astonishing that it could not have possibly been writen by the same person.

No, it was bad before the ocean, too.

The only difference was that it was actually fun to read, and didn't try to justify racism, or global genocide.

"Everyone hates you and wants you dead, you should kill them first before they kill you." doesn't requires justification and is a solid plan.

If your sole problem with eren's plan is that it justifies racism you are a certifiable retard.

You're being dishonest by repeatedly insisting that the only reason he wanted to commit genocide is because he couldn't get pussy. That only became true with the ending, before the last chapter his motivations made sense by wanting to end the outsiders before the outsiders ended the eldians.
I say that for amusement, but let's be real going by what has been provided by the anime, Eren's motives literally make no sense only because the threat he's fighting against is something created by him and his brother. Of course, this wouldn't be an issue with the idea that Eren just wanted to do the rumbling because it was in his nature to do so. After all he is a violent piece of shit and Chapter 131 is a major example of that especially when he is in a state where he views the Rumbling as liberation.

The idea of him being a sworn patriot protecting his people is a nonsensical idea for the sole purpose that Eren is the one who actively endangered his people alongside his brother. Not to mention if Eren cared about doing some self defense bullshit, he wouldn't have had an army of inexperienced dumbass nationalists start a coup or let his brother fuck over their military.

The only logical interpretation of Eren's motives up to chapter 130 (where the anime ended), is that he actively was seeking out the rumbling for a personal reason. Cause while you could argue the world hates his country, the story has shown Marley is a much more hated regime especially since it says a lot during the Declaration of War scene, many of the attendees reconsidered the threat of Eren's country for a brief moment and likely would be conflicted instead of Eren pretty much justifying the hatred they received. Someone more intelligent with the powers Eren had would've actively tried an approach of less bloodshed.

Hell the motives mean nothing especially with how the Rumbling itself is retarded since it would destroy the ecosystem that would eventually affect his own country and bring it to ruin.

Honestly, the story could be miles better had from the start only few people can become Titan, and not the entirety of the Jews race. They should have kept that before changing it into anyone can change if they consume the spine
Wasn’t that what happened with the Shifters?

Fast-forward and you have actual god powers. Planet sized jutsus and attacks. Talk no jutsu. Everyone getting revived from the dead. Shadow clones are used by every other character. Characters can throw moon sized fireballs multiple times. All characters can use water magic without a source of water. Secret alliances and loyalties changing like the weather. Characters with secret lineages and alien heritages. Everyone has magic eyes. Even more tailed beasts. Apocalypse scenarios. New levels of plot armor in being reached in a narrative. Naruto is the son of an ancient god yet it was all hard work.

The ends of Naruto and Attack on Titan are very similar. With the ancient lineages and powers that descend from an alien being. Every famous ninjas or titan being revived for the final battle. Talk no jutsu and Eren practically breaking the fourth wall when talking during the later chapters. Power levels bloating from grounded fights to planet sized conflicts in one battle. Political councils or speeches that exploded into huge fights or ambushes. The stories just bloated and grew and grew. And they became an apparatus for "big" moments like explosions, huge fights, assassinations, last stands, last second saves. Regardless of whether or not any of it made sense with the plot. Nor if the scales of the conflicts was consistent with the first halves of the mangas.

I think Isayama and his editors were making too much money with the story and just kept expanding it until it just collapsed on itself. Sure they never to the absurd extremes of Naruto with the filler and movies and gargantuan expansion of the story. But I remember reading through Attack on Titan and thinking very early "this story is going to get out of control like Naruto unless they have everything planned out". And it seemed like they had no idea where to go once they got beyond the walls and off of the island.
Honestly, you could argue AOT was like Naruto in that there’s A LOT you could cut out before the ending.

I haven't seen the anime so I don't know where it ends right now, I'm just going off the manga but how did he endanger his people? Marley and the rest of the world was already planning a full out assault to level paradis into the ground spurred on by their hatred independant of eren.

When he and his party crossed over the ocean they saw everyone hating eldians and the first time he made his presence known was literally in the middle of a propaganda piece that convinced the united nations to invade and level eldia into the ground.

The rest of the world was already united in turning paradis into a smoldering crater BEFORE they even knew about eren, right up until hiruzu showed up and offered them the diplomatic solution, what else was he supposed to do at that point other than strike back?

Not really since before the Declaration of War, only Marley and Hizuru gave a shit about Paradis. Like sure it was hated, but the world was too focused on Marley since it was a more hated country.

The only reason the Declaration of War happened was because Zeke nudged the Marley government to invade Paradis again so they can get the resources and founding Titan. Eren was perfectly aware of this and agreed to that plan.

Hell the ceremony happened so Eren can launch a large attack to get Zeke to come to Paradis and basically make sure that the Rumbling was the only solution. It didn’t help he came to Marley perfectly knowing this would happen so it wasn’t an act of self defense. Since he planned everything months in advance before the global alliance even formed (which it only did due to Eren attacking the ceremony).

Not to mention, Willy (whose existence as the one good Eldian is questionable but that could be saved for another time) pretty much hinged his entire ceremony on Eren coming in to kill him and all the other diplomats. If Eren didn’t come and wreck shit, the propaganda would be entirely ineffective if Paradis literally did nothing and Marley would be hated even more. That entire propaganda ceremony was pretty much guaranteed for Eren to destroy. Zeke, Eren, and Willy all had different reasons but that was a major part of their plan for it.

Even if Eren was this patriotic nationalist, the Rumbling is still a retarded plan to kill everybody since eventually all the damage caused by the Colossal titans will destroy the entire ecosystem that would affect the Island.

There were attempts at other solutions but Eren actively made sure they never came to pass like the 50 year plan (with a partial rumbling) and the Survey Corps attempt at finding diplomacy. These never happened because Eren forced everyone to follow his and Zeke’s plan.

Even with all these actions, Chapter 131’s existence shows that Eren’s motives were out of selfish interest since he hated humanity outside the walls for having the audacity to exist and didn’t live up to the ideal image from Armin’s book. I bring this chapter up since this was considered the last great chapter in the series and also is the best indicator of Eren’s true interests which isn’t saving his country.

tl;dr Eren and Zeke pretty much fucked everyone over. Eren endangers the island by basically making sure the world is further fueled to attack. Eren also only did shit because of his selfish desires.

The fact that everyone hated marley doesn't mean that they wouldn't unite against paradis. The world hated both marley and paradis, but paradis was considered neutralized. During declaration of war willy informed everyone that the founding titan had been stolen and the bloodline promise that stopped kings from declaring war no longer applied, which made paradis a real threat again.

He had invited dignitaries from all over the planet and after the play was over the response was uproarous applause which is literally supposed to mean that everyone agreed with him that paradis is a greater threat.

I even checked the wiki to make sure I was remembering right and its the applause that made eren follow through with the plan.

Meanwhile, Willy admits that he resented his own blood and hoped for the extinction of the Eldians, but conversely, he does not want to die, because he was born into this world. He acknowledges the diverse races and nations in the audience and asks them to join together against their enemy. He believes if they work together they can overcome any obstacle.

Hearing the applause, Eren stands up and concludes that he and Reiner are the same. He holds out his wounded hand to Reiner and helps him stand. Eren thinks they were born this way and goes on to say that he will continue moving forward until his enemies are destroyed. As he says this, he begins to transform in front of the terrified Reiner. Reiner turns to grab Falco and protect him.

The idea that if it wasn't for eren the ceremony would be a failure is bullshit because we literally see the ceremony succeed. The crowd applauding is supposed to represent the world siding with marley.

Not really since the start of that same chapter literally has scenes of Willy and a military officer discussing that the entire ceremony was bait and the fact that well this part of it proves that the entire ceremony would only work if Willy died

1659463019326.png

Also of course people would clap for this ceremony, it's because it's a speech by a very beloved politician, people tend to always clap for a charismatic speaker even if they disagree with the speech. Even then, the ceremony and Tybur's involvement was pushed by Zeke and Eren fully knew that to begin with.

Just because Eren attacked after the applause doesn't mean "Oh he would've only done this out of self defense" when earlier he used a child to mail out letters to the military in his country who only came because "Hey guys I'm in Marley now, better come to me", what the fuck would be done if Willy was booed and then suddenly the Scouts made an attack.

It also doesn't help that during the ceremony there was a counterplan like with Zeke leaving and the warriors being caught. So no this entire thing was a premeditated attack.

Also clearly even if it was out of self defense and the entire ceremony wasn't bait, Eren sure really showed them by justifying all the propaganda.

This is a narrative, not real life. In the context of a narrative characters applauding after something means they approve of it. You can't go "They actually meant the exact opposite of what they did because it agrees with me."

The world already disliked eldia and feared them, you're acting as if he was trying to sell ice to an eskimo when he was selling meat to a dog. Eldia was already universally hated to begin with and the play just gave them more of a reason to worry after the titan was stolen.

Its reasonable to assume that appart from self defence eren was also acting out of spite, wanting revenge for the mistreatment of eldians.

Also clearly even if it was out of self defense and the entire ceremony wasn't bait, Eren sure really showed them by justifying all the propaganda.

The world hated them not just disliked. The first story arc are a bunch of slaves outside of the walls, the warriors, murdering their own ethnicity inside of the walls, on orders of the other ethnic groups in the world that have trapped and enslaved them. The entire titan race of Ymir are essentially alien beings from another world. The centipede created a new race of people with titan powers and the world wants them all dead because they are dangerous apocalyptic alien parasites. The world would be better off with them dead as they are not even natural creatures but alien monsters. It is like plot of Body Snatchers or The Thing. Some parasite infects everyone and it is the end of humanity.

Those in the paths or whatever knew this because they share memories. So they know that their titan powers are not a curse or magical. They are from some alien centipede that came to earth two thousand years ago. And that it is too late to coexist with the other races and groups. They either need to embrace the parasite host and kill everyone. Or kill themselves and their host and try to rid the world of titans forever.

It makes sense that the world wants to control titans because losing control might end up with a rumbling. And same with wanting to kill titans and be done with the powers forever. The race of Ymir should only be hated or feared by anyone rational.

Why do you think I haven't already done this? I just don't like the franchise anymore, or really anime in general.

It's not because AoT blackpilled me, or anything. I've just moved on.

The issue when you bring up narrative =/= real life, is that you conveniently ignore the narrative where the entire play pretty much only happened because a certain asshole's brother pushed the entire ceremony to happen which lead to the entire global alliances existing. If Willy did this of his own volition without a push to help Marley get support against Paradis as a grab for power, then I'd perfectly agree with you.

Also in that applause scene there are shots of some people being uneasy, and not only that you ignore the panel that explicitly shows that Willy believed that if he didn't martyr himself and all those diplomats, then it wouldn't be effective. We unfortunately don't know what would happen if Eren didn't commit terrorism, but I'm pretty sure if say Eren didn't activate the rumbling or do anything would lead to some sort of skepticism.

It doesn't exactly help the hatred for Paradis was so strong that when the truth of King Cuck came out, people just...questioned Paradis' legitimacy as a threat and then were roped in by a charismatic war propaganda speech.

Not saying they shouldn't fight back in terms of like regular people and shit. But as for Eren, he and his brother are pretty much responsible for the threat. The fact that before the Rumbling happened, Eren has the capacity to time travel to manipulate past shifters shows he could've solved the problem if he cared for his people. Hell he could've just used the paths to make all the Island Eldians super invincible with ackerhax and immune to bullets since it's established that the Founding Titan can control biology of every Eldian.

Literally there are better solutions than basically bombing your neighborhood especially with the stupid shit the founding titan can do.

I feel you; I'm also recently moving on from another mangaka but I won't sperg about it here since its off-topic.
Do fans still go on about how Historia is Eren's True and Honest Waifu? Any posts/threads on Reddit that I may read and laugh at?

Just look at AnR really but here is a funny take from Titanfolk that cope about AOE and Historia

When Zeke died, we were shown Historia giving birth. It's making me think that Historia's child has the beast titan. And if that is true, and since the rumbling was stopped by Zeke dying, Eren can then use one of the pure titans to bring the crystal he buried in to where Historia is so when Zeke eventually does die in the anime Eren can then unharden the crystal he's in so he can touch Historia's daughter and then Eren can re-activate the rumbling.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense.

My brain broke on that sentence.

Oh God that comic; I'm glad it's on hiatus but I'm not going to go to their autistic analysis/theory pages.
