It's not just an empty threat though, it's actually true. Members of their community look down on the molested sisters far more than they do Josh. They 100% see Josh as the victim who was tempted by his sisters and unable to resist, instead of as a predator taking advantage of younger, vulnerable family members. I am reminded of Elizabeth Smart's memoir, after she is first assaulted by her kidnapper, her first thoughts were about how her church and abstinence based sex-ed had repeatedly told her that sexual contact before marriage, even done to you against your will, meant you were damaged goods and would never be worth anything to anyone. And that being assaulted was always your fault, that you did something to entice the pedo or didn't fight back hard enough, etc.

In Appalachia there are still churches that pass around venomous snakes. If the snake bites you and you die, it was god's will. West Virginia is the only state where snake handling in church is still legal.

The worst I got was that condoms don't protect against HIV (or anything but they really emphasized them doing nothing against HIV), that women have no sex drive and have sex only to bond emotionally with their partners, and no mention of the clitoris or and discussion of birth control pills beyond exaggerated failure rates. Also, they straight up weren't allowed to talk about homosexuality, abortion, or masturbation beyond providing a definition.
Mine was similar to yours. Even the evolution textbooks. We also had something called the "Starburst game" where if you got a certain color Starburst, then you got such and such disease from not being abstinent. Red Starburst was AIDS, orange was regret, can't remember pink and yellow short that one was other STDs. The other thing I remember was this tale about a girl with a tongue piercing getting scabies in her mouth from oral sex. I’ve always thought snake handing churches deserved some credit. Church is boring af. Deciding to dance around with poisonous snakes until someone fucking dies certainly is a way to make Sunday mornings interesting. Way better than listening to some old man drone on for an hour about Jesus.
