After talking to someone who asked "Why is she called Captain Marvel, isn't that like having Captain DC?", I wonder how they're going to justify the name. I could totally see that thing someone else said in this thread where someone calls her "Ms. Marvel" and she says "That's CAPTAIN Marvel" happening but where would the name originate?

In the comics the name originally was the result of people mispronouncing Captain Mar-Vell's name which he eventually ran with as he became a superhero instead of an alien infiltrator and any successors took the name to honor him. We're skipping him so even if Carol still names herself after him, it's not a name that would carry any weight for anyone. Plus as the comics point out, Carol was a Major in the Air Force and not a Captain.

I don't think it's possible to keep the intent without a Death of Captain Marvel type event playing out and that requires Mar-Vell to have been an established hero with a legacy as the man who gave up war because he loved Earth.

Mar-Vell is played by Jude Law in here.
So yeah expect Alfie to fucking die as he is the mentor guy

Nah, I know he will. What I'm saying is Mar-Vell isn't going to be a hero on Earth so that writes out it being a mispronunciation of his name and the name isn't going to mean anything for anyone but Carol. There's a vast difference between taking on the adopted name of a legend and just deciding now you're "Sargent Bob Smith" because he got shot after mentoring you.

It raises questions on the name.

Well I guess Marvel kinda thought nobody would remember and went like "Nobody will realize"

Is Marvel meant to replace Cap? I hadn't heard this anywhere else. I really hope you're joking here, dude, since I agree that it would be a total disaster. Of everyone else I'd agree that either Stark or Black Panther should be the ones who lead the Avengers after Infinity War. No one else either has the presence or the resources to take over.

Also, there is also the inevitable question when it comes to Brie's character, and apparently how powerful she is: where the fuck was she during the several Avengers movies? Apparently Nick could contact her during Infinity War, which means she is around presently. How long has she been around, and what was she doing?

I know that the movie is probably gonna try and answer these questions, but given the fact that this movie's screenplay had seven fucking writers does not fill me with alot of confidence. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4154664/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_wr#writers/

Generally speaking, the more writers a movie script has had, the more of a mess it tends to be.

I remember reading she was supposed to replace Cap as the lead. But yeah, Evans is out, I know Downey's contract is up, but Evans is 100% gone, Thor might be as well. Captain Marvel was to lead the Marvel Comics Universe so they might try it with the movies. The thing is, with Avengers 4, shit is going to change massively, so it might be all hypothetical.

Ahh when Cpt Marvel showed her sociopathic side when leading the Marvel Universe.
I cannot believe that it wasn't written by Mark Millar over how unlikeable she acted

Wasn't she a horrendously unlikable cunt in the comics? I seem to remember seeing her depicted as a butch dyke who was basically in favor of punishing innocent people predicted to commit a crime in the future (but who had not yet).

Yup.

I mean, at least Karnak (who had at that point been written as an absolutely terrifying nihilist) was smart enough to actually test the guy who was having visions by letting him have one, then locking him in a tower and going off to watch and see what happened.

(Heh. CM wishes she was as scary as that motherfucker. Even if his powerset is a bit cheesy)

I know this probably have been said numerous times by now, but I think it's important to remark it: Joaquin Phoenix managed to show a wide range of emotions in a thirty seconds teaser (fuck, it's not even a teaser, but a make up test).
Ah, what is the length of Captain Marvel's trailer, again?

The funny thing is Joaquin Phoenix captures the entire Joker character within 30 seconds. A man completely broken by society, driven insane, who just wants to see it burn down. Using that mask of humor for his utter sociopathy (which you get when he stops smiling just at the end).

We know that's the character of the Joker and he expresses it without a word. Captain Marvel? We get that she might be some sort of robot robbed of any human emotion. There's just...nothing there. Ok, she has amnesia and just exists to kill things. Maybe it was a shitty trailer cut, I don't know.

Yup, she was completely unlikeable and nobody bought her as the lead for the comics universe. You can't just elevate a C-List character to the A-List.

EDIT:
Also DC is kind of fucked as the Joker movie is only going to be a one-off, and Pheonix's Joker looks about x1000 times better than Leto's.

I feel they’re just going to completely reinvent the character to fix all the shit that’s been done with her. As for taking C-Lists into A-Lists? That’s what the MCU does best.
And I’m going to be honest, Pheonix’s Joker looks better than Ledger and Nicholson put together, and might even give Hamill a run for his money.

*Sarcastic feminist mode on*

Ooooh my gooood, the whole promo for this film is going to be Brie Larson harping about how much Captain Marvel is a good role model for little girls, because she's so STROOONG and SHE WEARZ PANTZ (an issue that has been resolved since, like, the seventies) and it's CAPTAIN, NOT MS. Seriously, that crap about people screeching "GENERAL" every time you say "Princess Leia" annoyed me like hell, so I can't imagine how I'm going to bear it for a character that doesn't even look likable in the first place.

Hell, it's not even that she doesn't smile. I don't care about that. She has the same facial expression throughout the whole trailer and she has the charisma of an action figure. Hey, you could say she's a good role model for little girls because she shows them that they can aspire to be action figures too, how inspiring. It's the girl emojis all over again. *cough*

She looks like yet another Strong Female Character™ who just punches stuff and never has any other emotion that being Badass™ because heaven forbid, she'd be a damsel in distress if her face just twitched a bit. And look, I was really looking forward to seeing good female characters in the MCU. I missed the good old days with Peggy Carter. I was tired of seeing the only good female characters in TV series (Jessica Jones! Karen Page! Claire Temple!). Nakia, Okoye and Shuri in Black Panther and Valkyrie in Ragnarok actually gave me hope, but looks like they're going back to the good old generic Strong Female Character™ archetype again, even though one of the big reasons why Wonder Woman worked so well is because it showed that a super heroine could kick some ass, while being friendly, feminine and maternal at the same time.

Venting feels good, from time to time. I just feel like I'm going to relive my experience of saying how the Ghostbusters reboot actually sucks from a feminist point of view and getting run over the coals about it. Even if my defense meant defending fucking Leslie Jones for playing a stereotype.

Literally the best possible way this film can end is with Rogue (preferably new actress/leading to a new continuity of X-Men) stealing her powers.

Personally, I thought Evangeline Lilly in Ant-Man and the Wasp was amazing. She's sassy, but not demeaning; she's passionate about what she's doing; she cares deeply about her family and friends; and she cooperative instead of combative, displaying both vulnerability and strength throughout the film. From the trailer, we know Captain Marvel is going to spend half the movie proving that she's just as good as a man when the Wasp never had to prove it in the first place.

Correct. It was full Minority Report where some psychic has visions of the future and she stands ready to condemn anyone who was either portrayed negatively in said visions or opposed her ideology.

Several dead and injured main characters later (Hulk, War Machine, and Iron Man to name a few) and the psychic she pinned all her plans for the future on fucks off to be a God, therefore making her entire plan in the arc utterly pointless. This gets her not only the ear of the President, but she is said to be, "T3h Most Popyoolar Gurrl In The World!!1"

Fuck Bendis, I dread to learn what damage he did to... Wait which DC books has he been on? Superman and Young Justice? Oh no...

I'm an MCU fanboy, so I'll go and see this. I am a bit worried about the concept of making her the face of the MCU and the most powerful. I'm getting echoes of Rey from Star Wars, that attempt to clumsily create an awesome character and force everyone to like them. Iron Man became the face of the MCU because of RDJ's charisma. Personally, I think Black Widow would be an obvious choice to lead the Avengers, both from an in-universe perspective (she's badass, experienced, capable of strategising and worked with Rogers) and an out-of-universe perspective (ScarJo would probably be up for it, the character is popular and you get the woke points for putting a woman in charge).

My guess for Avengers 4 is that they'll kill Steve Rogers off, Thor will go off to be king of the surviving Asgardians and Pepper will reveal she's pregnant so Stark has to retire.

I mean where did it say Captain Marvel will be the face?
