I am sad to see how people dismiss the ps3 as a failed console, it has a much better library than the ps4, the games were more experimental, it has some great hd ports from the ps2 and it can run pretty much every ps1 game if you own the disc
The trouble with the PS3 is all but obliterated the beautiful little ecosystem of Japanese games that had popped up during the PS1/PS2 generation.
All those wonderful, quirky little games and series either vanished completely or became worse on the PS3, very few devs like From Software really managed to survive it with that same spirit intact and later the Yakuza series had a resurgence, but so, so many things fell by the wayside like Shadow Hearts and PS3 never had anything like Rule of Rose, the Ico guy also skipped the PS3, it just absolutely killed the momentum Japanese gaming was on that thankfully turned out better than it could have by now, but it's never been exactly the same.
You can say some of that was an inevitable effect of the rising cost of HD development but that spirit managed to survive a while longer on the Xbox 360, which was the easier console to develop for, but Xbox was never going to be as big in Japan, so Sony dropped the ball.
That's one of the reasons for the "PS3 HAS NO GAMES" meme.
Sony's first party fare... fared better but what is it really that great? I love Uncharted and God of War 3 but outside of that? Jak dried up, Sly only had one game, the Twisted Metal reboot fumbled, SOCOM went to shit, does anyone care about Resistance? Killzone? Infamous? I know Little Big Planet had it's following but I never cared about it (I know that's just my personal opinion)
Anyway you slice it the thing was a downgrade from the PS1 and PS2 on the overall quality of games available on it, yeah there were some high points, but overall it was indeed... a failure.
