The trouble with the PS3 is all but obliterated the beautiful little ecosystem of Japanese games that had popped up during the PS1/PS2 generation.

All those wonderful, quirky little games and series either vanished completely or became worse on the PS3, very few devs like From Software really managed to survive it with that same spirit intact and later the Yakuza series had a resurgence, but so, so many things fell by the wayside like Shadow Hearts and PS3 never had anything like Rule of Rose, the Ico guy also skipped the PS3, it just absolutely killed the momentum Japanese gaming was on that thankfully turned out better than it could have by now, but it's never been exactly the same.

You can say some of that was an inevitable effect of the rising cost of HD development but that spirit managed to survive a while longer on the Xbox 360, which was the easier console to develop for, but Xbox was never going to be as big in Japan, so Sony dropped the ball.

That's one of the reasons for the "PS3 HAS NO GAMES" meme.

Sony's first party fare... fared better but what is it really that great? I love Uncharted and God of War 3 but outside of that? Jak dried up, Sly only had one game, the Twisted Metal reboot fumbled, SOCOM went to shit, does anyone care about Resistance? Killzone? Infamous? I know Little Big Planet had it's following but I never cared about it (I know that's just my personal opinion)

Anyway you slice it the thing was a downgrade from the PS1 and PS2 on the overall quality of games available on it, yeah there were some high points, but overall it was indeed... a failure.
What happened was that small time Japanese developers mostly switched to making phone games.

The rest were mostly absorbed by the indie scene. Shadow Hearts' developer was bought out and I think it's still owned by a company who does gambling machines.

But if you're looking for smaller games, just look at indie stuff. The indie scene is very international so you get a lot of intermixing of genres. This also extends to midrange games as well.

They switched to phone games because the PS3 was such a pain to develop for, while there would always have been a phone market I think both the console and phone markets could have co-existed had the PS3 been an easier platform to develop for.

I forgot to mention that even Katamari Damacy, the quirkiest Japanese game that found the most success, also dried up during the PS3 as far as all new, non-phone entries go.

What's sad though is all of those games could have found more of an audience today, as seen by the popularity of Nier: Automata, Yakuza and From Software, since for all the faults something like Twitter has, it allows word of mouth to travel like never before and oddball games to find an audience like never before.

It's actually painful to realize stuff like Shadow Hearts and Rule of Rose could have been much bigger financial successes if they had come at a different time and we'd still see that talent making similar stuff today instead of vanishing into the ether or moving into the indie scene.

Because that's what makes these games special is they weren't indie affairs but actual published games with bigger budgets than most indie games.

The PS3's development process and phones were entirely separate events.

Phones took off on their own and no console had any bearing on that. Their overhead costs were much lower than any console games which is what caused the shift. Even the lowest budget console game still ran more than the average phone game. The return on phone games was also greater so companies made more money. I mean look at Angry Birds, that's just a glorified flash game, but raked in the millions.

I agree, which is why the console ecosystem could have survived had the PS3 been a more welcoming platform.

I don't know if I misunderstood you but I thought you were saying that phone games "killed off" the Japanese console which was not the case imo.

We see that the success stuff like Nier has had in more recent years is proof that the console market could have avoided such contraction had the word of mouth of today's social media existed back then.

Nier and Yakuza are perfect examples in fact, the original PS3 Nier definitely had a cult following back in the early 2010s, but the resurgence it had with Automata in 2017 leading to a remake of the first game was much bigger than it was before, same deal with Yakuza, it had a cult following circa 2015 when the 5th game got a digital only release, but Yakuza Zero, also in 2017, blew up leading to a renaissance for the franchise.

Metal Gear Rising is another example of a game that's status has only been... rising.

And now Elden Ring has been a massive success and it's the same story, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls had their following from day 1, but it's only grown and grown since.

As much as I whine about the present day it is cool that many people have woken up to what Dom already knew, the coolness of Japanese games that are a little quirky in style, what's crazy is this stuff is also loved by your OnlyFans type egirls, which is amazing for nerdy old me to think about, hot girls, liking what I like? And not in a fake geek girl way, fans of this stuff are definitely genuine, this is an entirely different situation than the "Marvel/Star Wars" type scene.

It comes down to how common it is, Mario/Duck Hunt is way more common compared to just Mario.

The best version of the game is Mario/Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet though. That came with the NES version that had the red light gun and power pad.

Then you get into weirder shit like the same versions of the game with the famicom board adaptors included. Those were made because they couldn't get enough NES game boards, so they took existing famicom stock, gutted them and had the boards be slotted into an US NES adaptor since the pins were different. That ups the price signifgantly, they were only produced for the Holiday season and are much more rare.

I mean now you're spoiled for choice with actual famicom adaptors so the necessity of those copies are gone, but their rarity is what keeps them up. I have a famicom setup and it ran less than any of those games.
Well the problem with Retro gaming is investors got involved and fucked the whole eco system up.

Part 2:

Since we're flexing retardely expensive games, I own a sealed copy of Steel Battalion because apparently my dad bought one for me because I asked for it but he forgot he bought it and didn't give it to me until years later. By then I decided it wasn't worth opening. I still want to play it but not enough to destroy the value of it.

Gitting gud requires opening the games from their plastic wrap and actually playing them.
You don't really have any room to say that though. What's the point of owning so many games if you spend more time shitposting on a kiwi bird forum (and elsewhere on the Internet) than actually play them? Not to mention your knowledge and experience in japanese videogames is abysmal as it's been demonstrated many times before, and you can't into moonrunes (which would have been fine if you weren't larping as an all-knowing smartass).

This is some serious cope my dude.

Not only that multiscreen monitor set ups are a thing.

You have yet to prove wrong anything I said in the above post

And when it comes to poorly reacting, you don't have room to talk either, Sony fanboy. How much posts have you made so far in kiwi threads to defend your precious company? 500 ? 1000 ?

Like what? sharing data that gives achievement dates and hours played. That's all stuff if you put it out there other people can track. Kiwifarms isn't really a site where you do stuff like that.

And as far as my shitposts go, what can I say? I am boundless.

I'm curious about his reasoning for omitting the PS3, maybe the embarrassing launch, lack of cheevos for several years and forcing Cinavia into someones home is almost rape.
Because it didn't dominate the competition. Even considering it beat 360 in the end, Wii shat on them both. It was the only generation Sony lost. Well, unless you count Switch vs PS5, then they're gonna lose again.

It also was a step down from PS2. Still good but has an obviously inferior library. It looks better in hindsight since PS4 was mediocre at best, and PS5 is a joke so far.

When you really get right down to it, the PS2 was the pinnacle for Sony. Ever since then, its just been a slow, inexorable march downward for them. The PS4 sold better not because it was an amazing leap forward, nor because it had a good game library, but because both Nintendo and Microsoft just so happened to shit the bed at the same time, which is being proven now with the Switch invariably outperforming it in all areas and metrics.

I could see an argument for either PS1 or PS2 as the pinnacle. I prefer PS2 because the games have mostly aged better, but for its time the PS1 was a juggernaut. Tough call.

You're right that PS4 had weak competition, that was a great boon to them. PS5 doesn't have that luxury. Its only saving grace is Switch is often seen as a companion console, not direct competition. It's mainly facing Xbox.

The problem is that the Switch is mainly seen as a companion console to a good PC. The Switch being the companion console has not translated to good sales for either the PS5 or the new Xbox. It seems that, for a lot a people it is their main console, just not their only gaming device.

Wait we were taking photos of expensive games?! My copy of Half-Life on PS2 was £1.50 lmao

Most expensive gaming related thing I own is probably my Sanrio Animal Crossing cards. Although I heard there was a reprint so they might not be worth quite as much as they were a few years ago.

I can't get over how expensive old Pokemon games are these days when they all sold gangbusters and aren't even rare. Consoomers are a scourge.

I have a sizeable physical vidya wishlist and if you draw a bar chart of the amount of games wishlisted for each Playstation console it's been a steady downward trend since the PS3 onwards. At this point I'll be genuinely impressed if my PS5 wishlist ends up with 30 games on it like my PS4 one by the end of the console generation.

It's the boxes. Old Pokemon complete in a great condition box with all the crap that came with it is worth something because those cardboard boxes were put into the hands of children. In my opinion that's why Gameboy games are worth more than most perfect condition classic PC CRPGs bought exclusively by sperg lords, or the console japanese editions that are always in great condition.

These two seems to be worth more than most of what I have.

No one here wants to destroy you, people only wants to help you get better. No one cared or even checked if I left exif data in my Tales image.

Wait which one of you fucks replaced my copy of Get Fit with Mel B with the absurdly valuable Pokemon Colosseum Bonus Disc, a disc that just has a couple of trailers and gives you Jirachi in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and that is the only way to do so without hacking tools so therefore this stupid disc goes for $160 complete in box because Pokemon fans will seriously pay three figures for a single pokemon, because they genuinely believe hacking the save file of a 19 year old game is a serious moral wrongdoing?

WHICH ONE OF YOU REPLACED THE DISC?!?!?! NOOO NOW IM GONNA GET FAT AGAIN

There's this user named mmaballer13_who I posted about over in the TLOU2 thread, but I might as well post his stuff here too. I assume he's a troll of some sort with outlandish he can be. Though considering how much he posts, he's one of those trolls who goes so far it starts being sad rather than funny.

Literally pinging government officials to try and stop the Microsoft Activison purchase.

He also really hates Elden Ring atm

Arguing with a journalist because Forbidden West sold more physicals in three days compared to Elden Ring in two days.

These are just some, there's literally hundreds of these types of posts. He also gets into arguments with people about the bible and how "there is only one true God" and will frequently use bible quotes to insult his opponent. He also posts boxing content and I believe that might be literally the only thing he doesn't argue with people on.

Honestly, I think what concerns me more is how many actual Playstation fans agree with him on his wild posts, providing they aren't also just bots. Flies do like to buzz around shit after all.
I am certain this guy is some dumb kid that has never even been near a PS2. If that isn't a kid, then he's a manchild that needs to roll around in grass.
