Wuhan Coronavirus: Lockdowns, Quarantines, Cancellations

This is probably my biggest issue with the quarantines/lockdowns. We don't have a coherent response based on science, where some states or areas have a measured response based on some sort of data. Instead we have local people down to the Deputy Cletus level interpreting measures of safety "for the good of the public" based on feels, or personal power or psychological inadequacies. You have politicians using this as a way to get their agendas passed by force, whether or not it has meaningful effect on spread.
Although it presently falls under "unconfirmed shit on the internet", I've seen it alleged that the democratic-leaning states whose leaders favor SJW-type prison reforms have been the ones to push early release for prisoners in the name of keeping them from contracting the coof behind bars while saying this situation could have been avoided if said prisoners weren't unjustly put in jail in the first place.

The other thing that doesn't help is the flow of contradictory information and misinformation. Even though Governor Whitmer was quick to discredit the picture of the car seat not for sale as a fake in the speech she made today (13-Apr), few officials if any have done much to address unsubstantiated rumors and conflicting information spreading about as rapidly as the virus itself. With people pent up at home, often jobless, and often unable to do much due to restrictions on what can be bought in stores or shipped to their homes, any sort of assurance that there's a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel could be reassuring. Instead, they hear the same generic bullet points about staying safe and obeying restrictions. With the exception of posts made here, few leaders even seem willing to discuss the topic of what kind of time table might be in place to gradually lift restrictions to get things as close to normal as possible while working to minimize the impact of a resurge/second wave of the coof.

I just noticed that the Starbucks across the street from me has its lights on for the first time in a month. I don’t what they are doing but it seems strange they are on at night. People are going to get restless by May so I hope the lockdowns will ease up or they are going to be ignored.

I got a really nice card in the mail today from my town's administration.
It thanked me for my solidarity and patience with the lockdowns and included a small chocolate.

Can you pay your rent in chocolates and solidarity cards?

Minnesota’s governor can’t be left behind by his bugmen leaders on the East and West coasts because he’s an idiot who thinks that we should be governed the same, so he’s starting his own “coalition” of Dem-lead Midwestern states to resist Trump wanting us to go back to work. Looking at the states agreeing to these coalitions, it seems like all heavy Dem strongholds where they control the courts too, which makes me wary that they’ll try to extend this into the fall to disrupt the elections. However, all these lockdowns have done for me is make it clear that all of these socialist leaning Dems need to be voted out of office. None of them have the people’s best interests in mind. Walz announced a 10% pay cut for himself for the rest of the year but who cares when tens of thousands are out of work completely and he refuses to allow people to make money?

It's not like the town is responsible for this. The municipal governments can do very little in my country.

Fair. I was admittedly being snippy because it sounds like some crap my city would try as the social order crumbles around us...but thanks for being patient!

We don't see eye-to-eye much here, but a passive-aggressive "thank you for your compliance" is about the most Midwestern thing I've ever heard in my life.

DeWine prohibits liquor sales to non-residents

[/QUOTE]
Are they going to border counties to buy to avoid dry or blue laws? Or is it cheaper there tax wise?

I'm surprised that we aren't seeing more of a neo-prohibitionist push against legal marijuana sales in states where it's legal like we've been seeing from dipshits like Peter Bach in regards to alcohol.

San Francisco and Los Angeles banned legal dispensaries at first from operating in the early part of the lockdown but backed off after legal pressure due to the medical marijuana aspect of it.

Not to P/L, but in my case in Los Angeles the lockdown hasn't curtailed grey market/black market marijuana sales one bit.

I’ve seen a bit of commentary about how it’s silly to have dispensaries considered essential while buying clothing and seeds is apparently not in a state like Michigan, but nothing major. Can’t say I disagree either. In my state, the dispensaries and liquor stores are open, but gun ranges cannot be, which seems odd.

As always, the grey/black market prevails though.

Can’t wait for all the lawsuits stemming from these lockdowns. Even if there’s no coordinated efforts to squander rights, assholes like that cop feel like they can do whatever they please now, and that’s a problem.

Pennsylvania shut down the liquor stores a month ago, because the state controls ownership of the wine and spirits stores and they think preventing people from buying vodka is "flattening the curve".

Huge mistake, imo.

We're going to see at least a few Supreme Court cases from these lockdowns I think which could potentially rewrite a ton of our civil liberties. Although they'll likely go the more conservative route and refuse to hear most of the cases and the ones they do hear will pretty much write the book on how the government is supposed to handle disasters and not much else.

Lawsuit against Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D)'s shut-down orders, on the grounds that they take property without due compensation
(archive)

Under the order, Roscommon County resident Jerry Frost is unable to visit his girlfriend of 14 years because they don’t reside in the same household, the lawsuit said. The restrictions constitute a violation of Frost’s right to associate, according to the suit.

:story:

Guy is suing because he can't go fuck his woman. Hell yeah, man.

We've already surrendered so much privacy to corporations and the government that something like this would've been the way to go to fight this virus, far preferable to directly impacting people's daily lives and businesses. A lot fewer people would've been affected had the government developed plans like this years ago. Which if they're going to spy on us they damn well should have done something like that.
