Once I got through the first/tutorial boss, the rest of the demo was fine. The obvious bones of Nioh are there, but it's different enough for me. I'm not getting it immediately on release, but I'm probably getting it soon.

I just don't find Ancient China interesting at all, and one of my problems with Nioh 1+2 was if you didn't know Japanese history the plot was almost Incomprehensible and I am getting big vibes this will be similar

as of right now, the release of this game is a mess. It doesn't run properly on PS5, none of the PC versions work properly, you have to go into the BIOS to get a stable framerate, the only version that doesn't seem to have any issues is the xbox version.

It sucks as I was actually starting to look forward to getting into the game proper, but it's just not in a playable state right now.

do yourself a favour and pirate it if you really want to play it.

Oh man, first time I deflected into a kill stroke, leapt over the second guy and impaled the third, I was rocking at half-mast. I can feel this thing is going to have an incredible skill ceiling.

Only real complaint is that I don't find Chinese mythology quite as alluring as Japanese, but hey. I'm a Dark haired sword waifu regardless.

one thing I didn't realize from the demo or the previous game trailers is that the magic has its own rock-paper-scissors mechanic, except it's not like pokemon, it's more like counterspells in MTG.

essentially, by using the right spell element against another caster, you can just flat out nullify their spells.

I haven't got it working in practice yet, but I'll try it out once my pirate copy finishes installing.

BTW, first boss does that bullshit thing where he's a dozen times harder than what comes after. Push through him and experience gets a lot better.

I know, I got to the 4th stage on my original 2 hour run before refunding the game.

also, if you want to get a better experience, I really recommend playing offline. for some unknown fucking reason, it improves the game's performance across the board.

True. First boss is one of the biggest skill checks I've seen in a recent game.
Lu Bu. Hoo boy. I don't know if that's a meme or history badass thing, but fucking hell.

Game feels overall easier than Nioh and Sekiro despite that initial gate. The ball breaking stuff is optional, AI summons can do a lot of heavy lifting (although I solo a lot without them as their presence can make hostile critical targeting freak out and be needlessly unpredictable), and you're so deadly in close combat that even major fights can be over in seconds.

Also now I've gotten to grips with the game and advanced through it, I'm going to be a bit spicy and say I actually prefer this to Elden Ring. With no open world bloat keeping it down, and much faster combat, I'm having the time of my life. The story is nigh-on incomprehensible, but I have no idea who any of these people or events are which has no doubt coloured everything.

Plus, I've evolved into a cute witch with an eyepatch that casually parries demons the size of small mountains.

Lu Bu is both a meme and historical figure.

Dynasty Warriors 4 (near pinnacle imo) had a lot of weird fun maps and Hu Lao gate was one of them with various exploitable moments that made it fun to replay. Lu Bu could quite literally kill every ally officer if you just sat there and let the AI slowly advance.

The story is basically an extreme asian fantasy version of the Three Kingdoms period in China.

I like that they gave hua xiong his own armor set.
I /really/ like that the armor set is based off the regular officer armor from DW4.

Lu Bu in historical records was noted as an exceptionally strong man but Romance of the Three Kingdoms (along with others too) did exaggerate how much much he was to a certain degree

Uggggh. I love this. It's like cheap chinese food.
The assets are reused, the graphics aren't great. It's over the top characters with a dark fantasy take on wuxia is just...ostentatious.
But once that fucking combat hits you feel like God.
It's a weird mix of feeling like the natural evolution of a Dynasty Warriors game only emphasizing the boss encounters more and making each soldier tougher. The monsters are interesting, there's a great dance though the rhythm is different than other games.
Definitely more like sekiro and since I just recently beat that in Jan, the parrying here definitely scratches that itch.
Cheap Chinese food on gamepass and it's just fun to play. took 2 hrs to beat Zhang Liang, who definitely feels like the bouncer to this club.

Had a blast playing a few hours this morning. I think the deflect mechanic is much more intuitive than the parry in Sekiro. I also appreciate watching the jiggle physics of the huge titted giantess my character is.

Only thing that annoys me is being forced to have companions, does this stop later on or is there a mechanic I’m missing to tell them to fuck off? I’m on the 3rd stage and found I waited for the companion to die before I could properly take down the warthog boss of the previous one, now I’ve got two fat cunts getting in my way and awkwardly drawing aggro when I’m lining up a good deflect.

I haven't gotten there yet but the subreddit says there's this branch that banishes companions. I'm looking forward to some jolly cooperation when I get there.

You can use the willow branch you should have in your inventory, or dismiss them from the battle flag.

Companions are brilliant for grinding and cleaning up maps, but they turn some bosses into a nightmare. There's a bunch which are difficult to read at the best of times - last thing you need is your waifu making the boss spin and target erratically.

Also, people tip: you can perform basically every action while holding block. This makes parrying a lot safer as even if you whiff you'll still block a lot of damage. It won't protect you while you're in the parrying animation itself, but it makes a noticeable difference in the heat of combat.

Spent an afternoon doing co-op and avenging other players, both to build up my buddy ranks and buy all those shiny emotes. Decided to give my witch bigger boobs as well, which conjures up the hysterical image of lugging herself over a mountain just to ask the mystic sifu for more terrific titties.

Would have been happy paying for this. Game pass just means I'll be buying the season pass when DLC drops.

Schizophrenic difficulty aside, my only real concern is build variety. There's a fantastic amount of weapons, but I can't see people developing beyond different kinds of melee fighter. This isn't a huge problem (it ultimately knows its aiming for melee scraps), but it is quite disappointing that I can't become a Chinese ninja wizard ala Nioh; offensive magic is really naff until NG+ (at which point it breaks the game), and there aren't secondary tools to play with.

Plus, Chinese monsters are crap. Tiger monster, Pig monster, Cow monster...where are the giant Wall demons, flaming wheels ridden by a decapitated head, or goblins that nick your soul through your arsehole?

Overall though, I love it.
