Skelter is actually based as hell though. Dude's a Vietnam vet who hates Damsel since she reminds him of all the protesters back home. Keep in mind that the vast majority of people who were involved in 'Nam were volunteers, not draftees, almost certainly including Skelter.

9 million personnel, 2.5 million would go to Vietnam, and 1,766,910 were drafted for service. Even if we assume every single person who was drafted got sent to the meat grinder, that's still only half the guys we sent, including Air Force and Navy personnel, who were 100% volunteer. But the Army being smart, the majority of personnel who were sent to an active warzone were people who willingly joined, a draftee being more likely to spend time in Europe, Korea or even at home instead of Vietnam.
