The most ironic thing about that comic is that she’s talking about Final Fantasy 3 and holding a copy of Final Fantasy 2. So the fake nerd is whoever wrote the comic.

Even better, a satire on fake-nerdism.

C'mon, no way they did that without noticing they got the wrong cover art in a search result.

When the cartoon version has more dignity than the real thing.

I too would like to add that Funko Pops are butt fucking ugly and are showing up all over the damn place. Their bubble will burst eventually (if nothing else because the market is over saturated) but don't be surprised when something similar takes their place.

Last month I went to the local used bookstore. I say bookstore, but the place is pretty big and in addition to selling a fuckton of used books they also have loads of used games, DVDs, music (CD and vinyl), musical instruments, puzzles, board games, toys and other collectibles. Scattered around close to the registers where multiple collectible figures from before Funko Pops that were extremely similar to them. The only real difference is that their heads weren't completely rectangular and they didn't have those awful, black soulless eyes. I had completely forgotten about them until I saw them, and even now I already forget what their brands were called. There were at least two different ones before Funko showed up and really exploded in popularity.

Funko's will fail, and like their closely related predecessors, like Beanie Babies, like treasure trolls, like every other fad collectible before them, something else will take their place as the new fad collectible.

Well whats the real life equivilent ummm...

You forgot to add about Lindsay:
-Filmed her abortion
-Cheated on her boyfriends
-Is a massive alcoholic
-Has gone to jail

IMHO, this thread could actually start to go somewhere interesting if this was at the forefront (with a little more digging and some doxxing, of course.). That's only unless Lindsay doesn't already have a page here, that is.

She does have her own thread. Half the posts are about how Kiwis would like to eat whipped cream from her ass.

True nerdism isolates you and diminishes the quality of your life. Something in your brain has broken and your life just aimlessly drifts in a tight circle like a boat with a broken rudder.

When I see well-adjusted people ape this lifestyle in the name of fashion, it suggests two probabilities:

1) the ascendency of victimhood culture is to blame. In fiction, nerds are heroic figures that bravely defeat the bullies in their lives using self-esteem power. People want this to be real so bad.

2) nerds are primarily consumers, and media outlets are all too happy to enforce materialism.

I feel like some of those stupid ass "me vs other girls" things fit well here.

"liek zomg gais im not liek other gurls XD"
This reminds me of the "not like other girls" trope which shows up ALOT in Young Adult literature.

I'm also going to say it: liking Harry Potter is hardly the geekiest thing you can do- in fact it's bordering on basic bitch territory.

As you guys can tell by my username I'm quite a big fan of the software VOCALOID. It's basically software that allows voice synthesis for songs, demos or whatever. Kind of like what they did for SIRI.

I've had a lot of fun and made genuine friendships in the large community of musical creators, artists, etc but I have not seen a community with so much gatekeeping in my life.

(snip)

Don't forget the fandom pissing contest going on. God forbid you like Miku and get called out as a fake/dumb/basic Vocaloid fan. You gotta be a fan of a Vocaloid no one cares about, like Piko.

and then, there's the UTAU fandom

There was this nerd that decided to scrape Twitter to see what's the difference between geek and nerd: https://slackprop.wordpress.com/2013/06/03/on-geek-versus-nerd/
Long story short, this is the result of his Saturday afternoon work:
geeknerd-plot-01.png
  • Collections are geeky. All derivatives of the word “collect” (“collection,” “collectables”, etc.) are orange. As are “boxset” and “#original,” which imply a taste for completeness and authenticity.
  • Academic fields are nerdy: “math”, “#history,” “physics,” “biology,” “neuroscience,” “biochemistry,” etc. Other academic words (“thesis”, “#studymode”) and institutions (“harvard”, “oxford”) are also blue.
  • The science & technology words differ. General terms (“#computers,” “#bigdata”) are on the diagonal — similarly geeky and nerdy. As you splay up toward more geeky, though, you see products, startups, brands, and more cultish technologies (“#apple”, “#linux”). As you splay down toward more nerdy you see more methodologies (“calculus”).
  • Hobbies: compare the more geeky pastimes (“#toys,” “#manga”) with the more nerdy ones (“chess,” “sudoku”).
  • Brains: the word “intelligence” may be geeky, but “education,” “intellectual,” and “#smartypants” are nerdy.
  • Reading: “#books” are nerdy, but “ebooks” and “ibooks” are geeky.
  • Pop culture vs. high culture: “#shiny” and “#trendy” are super-geeky, but (curiously) “cellist” is the nerdiest
Anyway, most of so called "nerds", "fake nerds", "gamer girls" etc. showcased in this thread lean more towards the geeky side rather than nerdy as defined by Settles. The side which is defined by hashtags "#shiny", "#trendy", "#ipod" and "#stuff".
That's because all this geek trend is just a marketing ploy. Nerds study, analyse, hack, and geeks just consume. And it's from consumers you squeeze cash from.

Some people in this thread suggested year 2007 is to blame. I disagree, there are some reasons to blame the time around 2000:
  • special effects in movies start looking good, sci-fi is no longer limited to one rubberhead alien talking to another rubberhead alien
  • the first Matrix, X-Men, Star Wars prequel and Lord of the Rings movies come out and are box-office successes
  • Livejournal is founded and broadband internet access becomes mainstream
  • Harry Potter becomes so popular even mainstream media can't ignore it

This thread should be moved to the Salt Mine, and tagged with Locally Sourced. Or moved to the Spergatory, for the autism to remain manifest for the rest of eternity, because Jesus-gobbling-Christ, this is reaching Entersphere levels of spastic ire and butthurt.

No. It needs to keep going.

Jesus fucking Christ, this thread is far more autistic than I expected it to be and thats a goddamn accomplishment.

I thank the little people.
