I personally have managed to make over £300 just selling on pop funkos I get given as gifts, had this loot crate exclusive one that netted a solid £50 alone once. For an ugly as fuck little vinyl toy that'll never be taken out of the box and doesn't even have any rarity value. This fucking world.

Oh boy. The "I'm into Harry Potter/Sherlock/GoT/Dr. Who/popular show and I'm suchhhhhhh a nerrrdddd" crowd.

I guess the qualities constitute a nerd are arbitrary, but imo, popular shit doesn't count.

Funny though. It used to be thrown as an insult not too long ago and just a few years later it's what the mainstream crowd aspires to be.

I was watching Dr. Who before all these fangrrl "nerds" were born. They can suck it. Oldschool nerds have no need to preach their nerd cred. They were the ones who got trash-canned and swirlied in high school for fuck's sake. Stupid kids, ruining all the things, blah, blah, blah, get off my lawn...

Many "girl nerds" will go to long lengths to prove that they are also nerds and thus deserve to influence the culture because they read and watch geek media for the fun of it, and not just because they are posers.

It certainly does not mean that they are similar to typical nerds in behavior or what they want from nerd media, nor does it mean that their presence is good for the culture or its market, who feels the need to shift towards their (often tumblr-based) views while inevitably alienating both audiences due to their fundamental differences.

There are many articles that try to "protect" these kinds of girl nerds. Needless to say, they all accuse men of "insecurities" and wanting to create "secret clubs" where they can promote and engage in their "toxic behavior".

https://theestablishment.co/white-men-dont-own-nerd-culture-and-i-m-not-stealing-it-c48aaf5e5354

The fact that they claim to act the same as the original nerd culture, but that they also want to radically change it, shows that they never fit the culture to begin with, despite consuming the same media.
It's specifically that tumblr screeching that causes gamergate and every other problem setting the internet on fire in the Great Autism War. Self-important oppressed babies vocally decide that every "real" nerd sides with me on everything and if you disagree you don't get to be a real nerd anymore even though you were doing this 20 years before Sony's marketing team decided social justice and sheldon's catch phrases might be a profitable mix. It's always the same whether the nerddom in question is about video games or comics or warhammer or whatever.

I Fucking Love Science. Right up the same alley. Don't learn about actual science, just reshare pics of space nebulae and retweet George Takei's shitty tired memes.
Myself, I heart Ashy Science Nigger ❤️

The whole Xbox 360 marketing itself to normies with Halo and Gears of Wars and the rise of the current era of Comic Book Movies gave rise to the normies nerds.

Is it even nerdy still? This stuff is mainstream big budget movies and videogames now. And with all this big money, comes people who have no idea how to market things. The Jersey Shore promotional team did a video for the first pro all-female League of Legends team, and it was embarassing.

Dark Souls is my favorite franchise; all games are compared to Dark Souls but I don't enjoy those games. Did I fail at nerd?

These types of people will look at you funny if you hand them a peer-reviewed study, but will be more than eager to watch one of those Facebook videos or 5-10 minute youtube videos because they never go into any deep detail that requires dedication to the subject to learn the foundational material, but contain cool and interesting clickbait facts sold as science that these people can tell their friends about to impress them.

When I was younger I used the term "gamer" a lot, but as I've gotten older I realized it doesn't identify me anymore than calling myself straight, gay, goth, emo, punk, etc. The problem with shit like this is people (usually teens and young adults) have very little identity between the ages of 12-25 and adopt things that define them ranging from interests or something like a sexuality. It's a childish mentality that most people grow out of. We're all guilty of it, but it's the ones who realize this and grow up that I respect more than a 40 year old MLP t-shirt wearing man waiting in line at a GameStop wallet chain in hand to buy a Skylander or Amiibo that disgusts me.

Nothing like trotting out the corpse of the kids you made fun of in school to wear as a trendy new style.

BONUS: Their favorite franchises are accelerated into an early demise. They were gonna die eventually, but nothing like aiming at the lowest common denominator with a dollar to speed that along.

There have been nerd girls forever, but fewer of them. They've generally been as nerdy as guys with all that implies. They didn't just become "nerds" yesterday by putting on a pair of glasses without even any prescription lenses in them and a T-shirt of something they don't even know what it is.

Everyone hates a tourist in their culture, just like actual Japanese are disgusted by weebs.

You think being a star wars nerd means you know a lot of obscure star wars shit that no one cares about? Fuck you misogynerd, star wars is about strong female and poc protagonists. Women are funny and talented, get over it.

OMG I'M SUCH A NERD GAMER XDXDXDXD ex dee ex dee ex dee I just watched the first episode of GOT!

As much of a cunt as he now, Maddox really fucking nailed it a few years back with his piece on IFLS.
People love science in the same way they love classical music or art. Science and "geeky" subjects are perceived as being hip, cool and intellectual. So people take a passing interest just long enough to glom onto these labels and call themselves "geeks" or "nerds" every chance they get.

Semi-related: the popularity of SuicideGirls along with the rise of geek culture. Since that site got popular around 2006-2008, every "nerd" girl wants to look like she's featured on that site. At first, the novelty of a colorfully-inked girl was neat, but now, it's banal and tacky. Real life looks very different from Photoshop.

Finally, this image is very relevant:

I don't understand Funko Pops. They have them for many regular franchises, like Lost, so the market is I guess "nerds that like nerd stuff and other stuff too"? And are there that many people that want one of Dolores Umbridge? And why? My Barnes & Noble has several of those, even it's a purposely unlikeable character last seen in movies that are several years old now, like that's something people will want to buy at the mall...
I saw some image that said something like "why do Americans have a fundamental misunderstanding of cute?" with this:
upload_2017-10-24_17-57-33-png.302322
tl;dr: REEEEEEEEE NORMIES
I can agree though that Funko Pops are hideous. I only have one because it was gifted to me, otherwise, you couldn't pay me to buy one of these ugly fuckers.

I'm so glad other people don't like Funko Pops, either. Seriously, they're just... not cute. Nendoroids (like the figurine next to the Funko Pop in that picture) are so much cuter and higher-quality. Funko Pops just scream laziness to me because they all have the same ugly face. Somehow they're everywhere, though; I guess people are buying them, although I can't understand why. I think it's because Funko Pops are basically the only figurines/collectables that are commercially available in stores.

Do music nerds count? They often have the same mentality as well the same population of posers trying to ride their appreciation of Nirvana to show their superiority over the consumers of "modern music".

The last thing I want is to stray into complaining about my cultural appropriation because I'd be a raging hypocrite if I did. But it is pretty offensive when I've had a hobby for however many years that doesn't hurt anyone else and a bunch of try-hard heroes waltz in and tell me I'm having fun incorrectly because my hobby is really about a social movement and I'm the bad guy for not praising them.

GAH goth/metal elitists are the same kind of bullshit in a different packaging and they fucking muller my rage button.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the entire point of a subculture is meant to be to get away from the mainstream, isn't it? To enjoy the company of those who enjoy the same things that you do but aren't available in mainstream society? These fucksticks who come along saying you have to like the right things to be a metalhead or goth or nerd make me so fucking salty it's unreal.

Edit; also Megadeth or Maiden? You could have easily made the Megadeth or Metallica joke there you fake metalhead fuck.

Anyone who describes themselves as "such a nerd" or "a geek" is an empty human being whose only interesting traits are consuming pop culture TV shows, movies, or video games. Being so shallow you have to latch onto consumer entertainment to define your entire personality. It's sad.
