Pardon me while I sit down in my psychiatry armchair ...

As with many things, I think identity is the core of it. If you're American, white-ish, middle-class, agnostic/vaguely Protestant, and haven't had the shit kicked out of you by your parents, chances are you can make it to your 20s without developing a strong sense of identity one way or another. People want to belong to groups. People like the idea of "us against them." From 2007 onwards, "nerd" is a group with very obvious identity tokens--the t-shirt, the keychain, the stupid hair.

Furthermore, culture for the longest time had the whole "nerd loser" stereotype, so this upmarketed, repackaged version of the nerd identity lets you roleplay persecution and outsiderdom without actually ever risking being outre.

Keep in mind that this person got hired by Marvel and BOOM! Studios for her tumblr-posted adventure time fan art.

So many people today are too quick to put everyone in cliques. They always want to know if you're a jock, or a prep, or a goth. Me? I don't fit into any of those groups. So what am I? Well, I'm a Nonstop anime watching, Epic loot hunting, Rick and Morty loving, DC and Marvel fanatic. So what does that make me? Well, you tell me ;D

The folks we call nerds now are what we used to just call self righteous assholes/faggots 20-40 years ago.

The dudes we called nerds back then are just call country club membership holders today

or a unabomber

that was an extremely binary group

The entire premise of the show is that the only thing that can save the successful physicists from themselves is normie women. The audience isn't supposed to sympathize with the nerds, they are suppose to relate to the normie girls who eventually become their girlfriends who "straighten those nerds out". Which is marginally insulting.
Big Bang Theory isn't liked by nerds and it was never intended to be. Its creators market it to two main demographics: the parents of nerds who feel like they understand their children better now that the laugh track told them when the Mario 64 reference is okay to laugh at, and this thread's subject fake nerds who want to mask their own anti-intellectual drooling with an easy topical fad that lets them pretend they're one of the smart good guys without having to put in effort or contribute anything.

I think there's a lot of overlap between faux nerds and moralizing slacktivists. If you make a tv show that claims "science" as its label and direct it at people who think sharing snotty onion articles about global warming on facebook is doing their part to combat the evil anti-science republicans, of course those people will be eating out of your hand.

You see a lot of people trying to defend their status as nerds by strawmanning all people who see them as "posers", which comes across as even more sad than being a poser in the first place.

Who the hell invites people over to play Final Fantasy III?
The most ironic thing about that comic is that she’s talking about Final Fantasy 3 and holding a copy of Final Fantasy 2. So the fake nerd is whoever wrote the comic.

I find it interesting that in an attempt to gain a wider demographic and the same groups you talk about, they are essentially destroying some long beloved sci-fi/comic superhero franchises driving away the original fans.

There's an interesting parallel between this and the socjus people who are trying to "make up" for all the times they said nigger and faggot in their youth by trying to ruin the careers of anyone who says bad words now. Maybe some of the fake nerds think they're making up for not respecting nerds, and doing it by still selfishly shitting on nerds who won't take orders from them the same as they shit on minorities who disagree with their narrative.

I hate how normies destroyed the internet. If I'd known that in the future it would become a security disaster full of morons I'd have been a much bigger dick. I think about this every time I see someone argue against net neutrality.
