My biggest complaint would be the obvious MMO style sidequests. Some of which literally have you running back and forth through towns talking to generic NPCs about their stolen chickens or whatever the fuck.
This is a problem that has gone back since Skyrim. Devs make this huge open world but fill the side quests with MMO tier fetch quests. Why devs don't do more meaningful side quests I don't know. Although to be fair to Final Fantasy 16 I suspect that Starfield will also have an insane amount of MMO tier fetch quests.

I think it's the classics for me from now on. I finally decided to look into emulator handhelds and went with an RG353M, and that'll probably be my main gaming device for the foreseeable future. I haven't played the SNES versions of 2 and 3 in a long time, and it just felt so right to go back. Whatever the series is now, it ain't Final Fantasy and hasn't been for a very long time.

At least there's always fan-made game mods and tabletop RPGs as well. I'm working on one myself.

Bros, I think Final Fantasy is dead. This is why you don't put an MMO director in charge of a single player cinematic experience. All they do is make fetch quest, eat hot mustard, and lie.

Oh dear, now I can see the problem. From what I've been hearing from gamers is that the main quest line is pretty good. It's the side quests that aren't very good and feel more like filler instead of something that adds to the world and story. Perhaps it would have been better if the game was more linear like the older Final Fantasy's. Devs need to stop making open world games if the side content is just nothing but filler or radiant, MMO tier fetch quests.

I've not played many FF games so maybe the others are like this too, but it feels like they really resented having to put any RPG mechanics into the game - e.g. there is crafting, but the stat bonuses are utterly meaningless and materials are just drops from bosses. You technically have a party, but they never talk to each other and you can't control them. I was getting WoW flashbacks from doing my DPS rotation when my abilities come off cooldown.

It feels like they are catering to the lowest common denominator (especially since the game is so easy it's impossible to die) and it's not exactly sold me on the franchise. I might try out FF6 instead since apparently that is actually good?

Don't make me cry on stage during a stream, you'll regret it gaijin. Also buy the new Eorzea Encyclopedia where you can redeem a code for a minion that only goes on ONE CHARACTER, not account wide. Please look forward to it.

Ok, so from what I'm gathering, story is alright, mechanicswise it's DMC with chocobo's and takes it's time to hit it's stride and sidequests should be avoided like the plague?

Some extra questions. Is the combat nier automata level or deeper? I loved Automata bit the combat itself was becoming tedious. And does the game try too hard to be cinematic and is constantly interrumping things? or does it have a nice balance?

Doesn't sound like a day one once it hits PC but I am still interested in it...

Also, FF as a turn based system has been dead for a while. "This isn't final fantasy" has been a valid complaint since XI and XII es the last one that tries to work a bit with turns without it seeming ashamed of them.

Final Fantasy just means "game with overblown budget that has chocobos and summons developed by square enix" and it has been for a while.

Early game sidequests are kinda lame, but im told a lot of them actually have some pay off later on when you complete everything. I just got a rideable chocobro and they referenced a quest I did way back when so Im not sure if that's needed to get it.

The sidequests actually started getting interesting when you reach the empire proper and have to pretend to be a slave. They dont hold back on some dark shit. We are talking using dogs to maul people for sport and slaves as pets for children.

I got this feeling since FF13. The linearity of it, more emphasis on spectacle than gameplay, it was the start of style over function for the series.

So... None of you guys are going to talk about the gay sex scene involving Dion that was obviously added by Sony and Square Enix to increase their ESG score? Would have thought that would turn many people off.
There is no gay sex scene in the game. There is a gay kiss. The only thing even close to a sex scene in the game is hetero.

I completed it. I still stand by the "most sidequests are dogshit" stand point but the game randomly throws like five or so meaningful ones at you right at the end. Otherwise, I overall actually really enjoyed it. The battle system is fun given you don't put on the easy mode accessories and the boss fights are (and I hate to use this word) epic. I liked the ending but I'm an emotional bitch so I would.
You guys are kidding about the gay sex scene, right? There's a gay kiss scene that's extremely brief and another scene where they half-embrace. It's there but not in your face. People are saying this is the first FF game with raw, greasy ass sex in it but are totally forgetting that Cloud almost got gangbanged by a group of dudes in a bathtub in FFVII.
Overall, I'd recommend FFXVI. It's not the best game ever and is no FFVII / FFX but it's a decent entry to the series. Also, the whole "it's not final fantasy" argument; people have been saying that shit since X / XII +
I would rate it an 8/10. Battles fun, characters good, story good. Cutscenes too long, sidequests suck.
