Shit I only use taunts these days to see around corners like a pay to win dickhead. Did they ever fix the beggars bug with taunts? That shit was actually a decent strat on cramped maps like dustbowl.
a rather gay as fuck strat more than anything, but it's still doable as far as i've had seen, video proof with the schadenfreude

Strat is perfect for corner camping, anyone besides a heavy will be melted. Of course it doesn't do jack shit in any place besides a flank route choke point but on maps like dustbowl 1st you can cover a whole route easily that way. The main weakness of the beggars gets very easily removed and just becomes a death machine. Gay or not, dropping that 99% uber med from around the corner feels like heaven on earth.

you can, but not a fan of using the contracker in general since it prevents changing directions, another bit with video proof
I just remembered, you can bind the ConTracker "taunt" without having to actually open it.
Code:
alias "+pda" "cyoa_pda_open 1"
alias "-pda" "cyoa_pda_open 0"
bind "N" "+pda"

i saw a guy yesterday doing the beggar's exploit, super funny to watch but seems like more effort than it's worth
just use the direct hit like a white man

I've never liked Uncle Dane's attempt to create “real” class roles with his “power, pick, support” thing, and I don't really like how hard it is to talk about class roles without people using those stupid names, but I do like this 3x3 chart that tried to classify the classes based on Valve's given roles. What say you guys?

that it's far more nuanced than it seems since barring the last three, everyone's a generalist

Danes problem is that he let his YouTuber celebrity status get to his head. I don't know how anyone in their right mind could argue that the BASE jumper was unbalanced. Still mad at him for ruining that weapon.

Cyberix just started hosting a server for the old TF2008 project and lets you play without needing Steam spyware.
Forum thread

Local text archive:
TF2008 is a preservation project built around the earliest publicly available Team Fortress 2 build, running on Source SDK 2013. It's been around since 2018.

DOWNLOAD COMING SHORTLY..

Contains binaries for both Windows and Linux.
Run launch.bat or launch.sh, set a username, and connect.
That's it.

SERVER WILL BE HOSTED AT cy-x.net:27015
Open console with ~ and type: connect cy-x.net:27015
The server won't appear on the master server list.
Custom maps, saysounds, and QoL plugins. Vanilla gameplay.

The client uses Goldberg so there's no dependency on Valve or Steam. The archive is permanent and portable.

Linux note: Flamethrower particles are currently broken on the native Linux client. Wine/Proton is recommended until fixed.

Steam users: Drop tf_2008_revived into your sourcemods folder, switch SDK 2013 MP to the 'previous2021' branch, and restart Steam.
and
README.txt below:

=== TEAM FORTRESS 2008 REVIVED ===
STEAMLESS CLIENT
Version: 05-Apr-26

A preservation project bringing back the earliest
publicly-available build of Team Fortress 2.
Running on Source SDK 2013, liberated via Goldberg.

Permaserver: cy-x.net:27015 (alt: 45.90.12.43:27015)
To connect, open console (~) and type:
connect cy-x.net:27015

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

=== INSTALLATION ===

[ METHOD 1 - STEAMLESS (RECOMMENDED) ]

1. Extract the archive anywhere you like.
2. Run launch.bat (Windows) or launch.sh (Linux).
3. Set your username on first launch and you're done.

Note: The Linux client has a known issue where
flamethrower particles do not render. Running the
Windows client through Wine or Proton is recommended
until this is resolved.

[ METHOD 2 - STEAM ]
(This assumes you're on Windows)

1. Move the 'tf_2008_revived' folder into your
sourcemods directory:
C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/sourcemods/
The folder must be inside the steamapps folder of
your active Steam installation.
2. In Steam, switch Source SDK 2013 Multiplayer to
the 'previous2021' branch:
Right-click > Properties > Betas
3. Fully restart Steam. 'Team Fortress 2008 Revived'
should appear in your library.
4. MacOS/Linux: add "-appid 243750 -steam" to the
game's launch options.

Note: The permaserver will NOT appear on the
masterlist regardless of which method you use.
Connect manually via console as shown above.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

=== LAUNCHER ===

launch.bat / launch.sh will ket you set a display username and randomize your local Steam ID automatically.

To change your avatar, replace the file at:
steam_settings/account_avatar.jpg
PNG, JPG, and JPEG are all supported.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

=== CUSTOM CONTENT ===

This is a very early TF2 build. Compatibility with
modern custom content is limited.

UNLIKELY TO WORK:
- Custom HUDs
- Maps made after ~2010 (missing assets, incompatible
game modes)
- Custom weapon/viewmodel replacements
- FPS configs. DO NOT USE FPS CONFIGS. Your game
will very likely crash. Chris' old configs may work
but are not guaranteed.

LIKELY TO WORK:
- Custom player models and skins (Texture Improvement
Project works fine)
- Custom player sounds
- Most texture mods
- Content made between 2007-2010

=== SUPPORT ===

If something's broken, come find us. please be patient and clear about your issue, there aren't many of us.
A Linux server setup guide is in the works.

This is just the original 2007-early 2008 game ported to Source SDK 2013 and then freed from Steam DRM. Maybe you'd be interested.
and checked myself no surprises of any kind to be found, it's a pre-goldrush build essentially speaking
and this behavior makes me think that it's a v1009-ish build to be more specific

I played on a server recently where the Thermal Thruster allows you to use it immediately mid-air. It wasn't as unbalanced as I thought it would be.
My only problem with the Thermal Thruster as a mobility tool is that you can carry the intel with it. Many a game of Doublecross has ended in like 5 minutes because some Pyro grabs the intel and by the time anyone can react he's already on the bridge.
This may just be a map design problem since Scouts can also go back up the ledge with the FaN/Atomizer. Maybe the map should just be changed so you don't constantly have to have an Engi in the intel room 24/7.
Either way, I think it's fair to add the Jumper weapon "no intel carrying" penalty to the Thermal Thruster and otherwise buff it.

Yet another thing that would be solved by removing the science-backed, Mastertroons-approved Tobuscus doors. My favorite map to steal intel with the Jetpack is Turbine, not Doublecross. Boosting yourself into the vent confuses a lot people looking for you and then you can jump from ramp to ramp in the middle area to go right into your team's vent.

I never understood why they decided to give the pyro that kind of mobility. Don't get me wrong, its not unbalanced or anything, its just a weird choice.

It doesn't really feel satisfying to use. Its too slow to be useful in combat. Feels more like an Overwatch/Apex Legends type of movement mechanic than TF2.

To be fair, any dickhead scout main with a Force a Nature can troll an entire lobby far easier than a pyro ever could. My dark confession is that I do this from time to time when I'm feeling antisocial lololol
