I am more partial to the Mario Land Series. The first one and Six Golden Coins is amazing.
The interesting part about SML2 is that the designers wanted to break convention. Instead of a linear map, you can play any map you want from the start. Instead of saving the princess, you take back your castle that was stolen from you.Mario Kart? I played the SNES and the 3DS game. Always played as Yoshi or Koopa Troopa. While you were saving the foreigner princess and in one level fighting the illegal alien that kidnapped that princess in the first placeThe interesting part about SML2 is that the designers wanted to break convention. I honestly liked SMW2 more than SMW, also, did you know there are some very dedicated fans who make ROMHacks (mods if youre a filthy casual) of their favorite Mario games (myself included).
But honestly, Super Mario Land 2 is pretty damn good as well, very varied.
Since you mentioned SMW romhacks I have to post this insane hack that came out late last year, it's the most impressive and entertaining kaizo hack I've ever seen. You can find very good romhacks out there, hell, i would dare to say some romhacks are arguably better than their original counterparts
Someone even made romhack called Mario is Missing Done Right

This is what Mario Is Missing should have been, a 2D platformer starring Luigi in an adventure to save Mario
If someone needs any recommendations, maybe this will help

Also, there is this community, it is mostly focused on Mario World, Yoshi's Island and Mario 64

The wario games are great I've probably beaten wario land 2 like 5 times. Donkey kong levels always felt a lot more memorable then 2D mario levels (with the exception of mario land 2).I like the spinoff games (donkey kong country, yoshi's island, wario land, etc) more than I do the main games tbh
A lot of people dislike the NewSuper Series. TBH, out of the cluster of the NewSuper series, I liked the DS and the Wii versions. The rest were the same copy and paste type aspects. I know most fans have a boner for the Koopalings, but they overstayed their welcome when they appeared in other NewSuper games.
The New Super Mario Bros bros games are not bad, but, they feel, i don't know, what's the word? derivative? uninspired? they burrow so much from Mario 3 and World for nostalgia's sake to the point they feel more like fan-made stuff rather than official Nintendo games

Why did you mention Stop and Go Station I hate that stage.Plus the levels aren't diverse. Mario 1, 3 and World felt rather robust and diverse IMO and New, while not THAT bad just has way too many new ideas or makes it extremely easy.
Speaking of Super Easy. Mario Maker levels had that problem with either Kaizo hard levels or super easy levels with empty rooms or way too many power ups, 1 ups, etc that would lag the game. Playing those levels once is fine, but when a grand bulk becomes the same thousand power ups or plays itself gets tiresome.
Which why I find Mario Land 2 amazing on it's own merit.
I can reply more DKC levels and expect good clean fun compared to the samey Mario Levels in the later instalments. I played Most of the New Series an I don't remember many stages out of it. DKC? I can remember various stages. From "Stop and Go Station", "Milestone Mayhem", "Bramble Scramble" and "Poisonous Pipes".
The one that came to my mind. As well for Mine Cart Carnage. Why did you mention Stop and Go Station I hate that stage.
