More on the shows weird representation.
Why is the gay doctor the gatekeeper to it all? Isn't that perpetuating multiple stereotypes? Someone can only come out after consultation with a wise gay. Gays creating more gays. Also, he is a doctor. Doesn't this reflect issues of grooming? Pushing from the medical establishment certain identity issues? Conversion etc.
Is it a weird reflection of the experiences of people, not thought through? Or is it incorporating stereotypes, fears and concerns as reality?
Even the whole, "the doctor will make the perfect new body for you." Then the fact it still looks terrible and not your gender.
It's all so strangely handled.
Then why did the writers decide to shirk all the comic relief to the "fatty"?

Fat people have "quirky" personalities. This also gets to my point at a lot of the representation is laced with stereotypes. It's all so sloppy. Or is it intentional, because the writers think they're so enlightened but don't realise they aren't?
Does anyone else notice how they shoot Michael and Tilly's bodies? Tilly's got a chubby face, hard to avoid. Yet most of the time the body isn't shot. Then there'll be an oof shot which is really bad of her body. Her walking next to Saru and it looks awful. The costumes aren't designed for people of her size.
With Michael, it's almost like they'll never give you a clear shot of her body unless they have to. They shoot her sitting down, or a shoulders and head shot. She looks fine. Yet whenever you get a fuller body shot, it's kind of surprising how short and plump she now is.
You feel they're actively trying to shoot around it. This week I'm going to try and pay particular attention to the shots of the thin female cast. See if they're shot more flattering of their bodies.
Below is a post I had typed but didn't post that was still in the text box. I'll leave it.
It does make you wonder if the show meant to imply that the most evil minority woman is still better than a decent white dude.
It is fucking strange how they approached her character. Some reverence for the actress trumping the fact they made her space Hitler. Actually worse than a space Hitler. Yet we're meant to forget that and like her? What was that about? She's a minority and so she's just doing what she has to. Is that the point?
"Oh well, she just ended up running an evil empire and eating sentient humanoid species. That's just what happens to people by circumstance."
Never at all got why they tried to rehabilitate the character.
The show is anti-white dude. Pike's been the only white straight male character who isn't evil. I'm sure they'll gay him in his own series. Be pan/bi whatever. It's not even anti-white dude. It's anti-male. When it comes to the side characters, we get more from the women than the men. I guess Michael's boyfriend isn't an evil male, but he's not white. After her previous boyfriend was literally a monster inside.
I am totally expecting the guy from The Mummy who runs Starfleet to be revealed as gay. The way they said, "your family" in a recent episode made me wonder.
