I've been watching for years, but this is the first sgdq where I haven't made an effort to watch whenever I was home. The runs this year are totally lackluster, the games being ran are trash (?? no mario maker? where is tasbot? legend of zelda in the middle of the night?), too much PMG and friends.

I dunno, I want to have hope that they'll get their shit together by agdq but I'm not optimistic.

Lord notch donated 10k, people really were celebrating but by old traditions the celebrations doesn't last long to help the runners concentrate, the feefee brigade believed that they were ignoring Notch on purpose for being a memelord

Of course Notch doesn't give a shit and is planning to donate more dosh

I can only dream to achieve his level of fuck you sincerity.

I sadly have to agree with you here. Usually I keep up to date on the schedule and plan out which runs I want to see. This time there was only a few I was interested in watching with long gaps in-between them. And the lack of a TASbot block is probably the main reason why. That's one of the best and most interesting blocks in the entire marathon. I understand if they're still working on a run that will blow our socks off in January, but their absence is very noticeable. At least there's Pinball Done Quick...

TL:dr Not the best marathon, hope AGDQ 2018 makes up for it!

I didn't stay up to watch the finale for the first time in years. I want to blame the late Tetris block for that, but I'm reluctant.

Autopsy: Setting aside Prototranny, I just wasn't feeling this GDQ. They smashed their donation record, but the runs weren't standout, the scheduling was poor, the crowd was half-empty most of the time and nobody seemed terribly excited to be there. They had multiple long, dull JRPGs filling the schedule (not a coincidence, I think) while the Super Metroid race wasn't on the final day (breaking tradition) and things like TASbot were nowhere to be seen.

It's been five years for me. Guess it had to lose its shine eventually.

BotW run stunk with deaths and other fuck-ups of that nature. I was also half asleep watching it so your mileage may vary. Any percent is also a boring run that basically skips over the whole of the real game in lieu of running straight for the end boss. This is a game thats only interesting when doing all guardians.

It also doesn't help that the runner submitted this run last minute despite the BOTW community universally agreeing NOT to do it on the grounds of fine tuning the speedrun for next year.

Talk about stabbing the community in the back.

It still doesn't top the disastrous Majora's Mask 3D run from SGDQ 2015. The runner was visibly inexperienced, didn't make safety saves (which all runners do in any marathon unsafe run except Super Metroid, which is why SM is always a race in case multiple runners die at Phantoon) and then botched several big tricks that cost him ungodly amounts of time and had no idea what to do. This left his couch in an awkward silence that endured for almost the entire run. He ended up going over estimate by several minutes. Poor kid.

The AGDQ 2018 games list is out.

For the first time ever, they've cut Super Metroid completely. God knows how this will turn out. I'm seeing a lot of surprise and disappointment. No SM64 either, which is also pretty huge.

Protomagicaldiaper isn't on the schedule, but I expect he'll be on the mic. (He submitted a tiny 10 minute run and was declined).

Also: If anyone's wondering why no Cuphead, the deadline for submissions closed before the game was released.

Huh... there's a lot of really not interesting games on that list. A couple with potential, but I'm not hugely impressed

I'm partial to OOT 100%, SMS, the L4D2 co-op run and MGS3 E-EX. It's also interesting to finally see a Burnout game in the mix after years of rejections.

Also, I didn't notice this: Mike Uyama himself is doing a run of Earnest Evans, that shitty platformer game Retsupurae fans might remember:

I can't find anything on the SDA forums about his return. The GDQ website still says he's on medical leave.

Oh yeah, both CavemanDCJ and Chibi are attending this event too.

I never really watched the Super Metroid runs, but it seemed like tradition to have it.

Regardless, I get less and less interested in watching these live anymore.

Yeah, the bidwar between saving and killing the animals at the end of the game traditionally had a huge turnout for donations.

The game list still seems decent enough and worth checking out though even with some of the mainstays removed. I'll still probably end up watching it when I can.

Uyama did commentary at SGDQ this past year, I think he just quietly came back without any big announcement or explanation. He commentated Prince of Persia, at least.

The two small-time runners I really like are skipping this year (Azorae's the main one), so I was already kind of meh. Funcannon doing Dying Light co-op and alexh0we doing Opfor will probably be what I 'look forward to'. Right after that might be a bad games block, which is usually fun. The Ori race and Owlboy'll probably be neat as well.

I want to see how the Metroid thing goes down. Worst (best?) case scenario would be that people see the reason (You might die and fuck up the run!) as being sort of against the speedrunning ethos and see GDQ as being overly produced and corporate now. I don't really care much either way on the merits of it.
