Forspoken is being published by Square and is made by the same studio that made final fantasy 15. It's directly in line with what they put out previously with the open area combat, sony had zero to do with the art direction for the game. It's literally going to play like a more elaborate final fantasy 15 because they're using the same stuff that they developed for 15.

Yeah, and FF15 had a bunch of J-Rock boys on a road trip. Suddenly with a Playstation Exclusive™ they're putting in some negress from New York who is a sassy, gritty and street smart young woman who persevered regardless. Yeah, that sounds like something the Japanese would be interested in making and totally not Hollywood types like Sony.

Either way the FF15 combat sucked so that can't save the horrible narrative.

It's not a playstation exclusive though. It's also launching on PC same day there's no timed exclusivity deal it seems.

I'd say this is Square Enix trying to copy Capcom a bit. Resident Evil did well with it's very realistic renditions and you also had other games like Dragon's Dogma which were very western inspired.

Honestly I thought the MC was a pajeet, then again some of the hair stuff for her and the cat look unfinished. There's some shots where it looks like the skin textures need a few more passes.

As previously announced, Frey is performed by Ella Balinska, so I hope you enjoyed a longer look at her performance in the trailer. I’m excited to reveal more characters from Forspoken and some of the fantastic actors behind them too:

  • Jonathan Cake plays Frey’s companion “Cuff.” Cuff is a magical, sentient bracelet of uncertain origin who helps Frey navigate through the sprawling landscapes of Athia.
  • Janina Gavankar plays Tanta Sila, the strongest and most formidable Tanta in Athia. While she once protected Athia with her unparalleled prowess in battle, Tanta Sila is now a dictatorial despot who is mad with power.
  • Keala Settle plays Johedy, the hard-nosed archivist who provides Frey with guidance during her journey in Athia.
  • Monica Barbaro plays Auden, a kind and open-minded young woman who prioritizes the needs of others before her own. She is quick to accept Frey in Athia and sees more in her than Frey does in herself.
It is exclusive to PS5 on consoles because both parties finally recognize the PC market as no threat and are the kinds of people who wouldn't buy consoles anyways. Also, you are faceblind as fuck, Ella Balinski is half Jamaican black and half white -- if you consider a Polish Anglo to be white:

And the villainess looks like a white woman - honestly this one is hard to tell from - which matches up with the present twitter narrative of how white women were allies, but are now oppressors:

I genuinely don't like race sperging outside of shitposting, but you are so fucking blind because Sony is involved. Capcom never pulled shit like this even with Resident Evil or Dragon's Dogma -- and Mercedes was my waifu.

She still looks more Dravidian than mulatto, I mean she could probably be subject to some Sicilian jokes. But she's not really looking like the trope of how black women are traditionally portrayed by western developers.

It really doesn't look any better or worse than what Capcom did with Resident Evil 5.

The villain definitely looks more inline with what Square makes their big bads looks like though. Like you have Edea, Eve, Scarlet, maybe Seymour(he was a real big bitch).

I mean what they showed from the gameplay it might be good if they are honestly refining established systems. But I don't think we'll be getting a anything big agenda driven. Especially since all the NPCs seem to be european medieval types.

Is it wise to read too much into Forspoken? SQEX bled so hard on Luminous Engine they couldn't have left it with only FF15 as the only one. So they spin off a team to use it to make something, anything, that might recoup even a bit of its development costs from the money pit that was Crystal Tools to its final incarnation. Which is probably still not as good as UE5, or Decima or whatever else.
To be fair I've got the hardware to run FF15 with the 4K textures at a minimum average 90fps/4K and while it is gorgeous, it is still pretty boring. And I can't help but think that's why the Forspoken trailer still looks like a tech demo.

The only good thing to only come out of FF15 was that square got it's act together and stopped dragging out development for future projects so a shitshow like 15 wouldn't happen again.

15 had promise but it's execution of many things was greatly flawed and entire sections like the bad survival horror-esque section were later patched out. But even in it's current state it's still pretty obvious it's an unfinished game.

So if they're somehow able to take the lessons they learned from 15 and apply them to another game and really nail the combat I think it's worth a shot.

It's not just the appearance, I actually don't mind the appearance at all, it's how they present her and all the other characters. She is absolutely supposed to be black because her face model is probably Ella Balinska, who is half-Jamaican black and a Polish Anglo. Also I don't think Dravidians find themselves in New York as often as black people do. Even if they did? Some consider them to be Sudanese/Ethiopian Indians. As for the other characters? One's an activist, the other is an open minded non-racist in a - presumably because why else would this matter? - xenophobic world and the villain is... well I already said the Twitter narrative.
Frey is a directionless, gritty yet street smart young woman who has persevered despite her rough upbringing in New York City. And her life hasn’t really gotten any easier now that she’s about to turn 21. Things take a turn for the unexpected when she’s magically transported to Athia, a land where fantasies and nightmares are suddenly very real.
Resident Evil 5's Sheva wasn't insufferable; maybe this bitch won't be either, but the way they market her and the characters at present absolutely is. Reeks of the same shit Volition is spewing.

Ironically enough your statement only reinforces my belief. Desperate companies always reach out to wokespeds in an attempt to recoup costs.

Honestly it doesn't sound any worse than any current isekai story setup.

It makes me wonder if they'll pull a "she was dead all along" thing though as a story twist.

This is 100% absolute horse shit.
Indeed, God of War was a critical and commercial hit back in 2005.

God of War went from having an awful last installment on the PS3 to 2018 which I personally thought the reworked game mechanics were well done.
Ascension was hardly awful, it was the game that showed the old formula was getting stale and needed a shake up, but it was not at all a bad game.

I just remembered though, Ascension teased a plot point at the very end with the oracle telling Kratos that his family being in that village "did not happen by chance" which has yet to be followed up on.

The series has so many plot hints that have yet to be followed up on it's pretty frustrating.

Yup. God of War did very well, especially since it came out in early '05, shortly after the release of GTA San Andreas, and shortly before the release of the Xbox 360. That was a time where even great games could easily get lost in the shuffle, but, it pulled through and made a name for itself.
Games like Haunting Ground *sigh*

In the years since Haunting Ground has managed to amass a pretty noteworthy cult following, but at the time it was so wholly overshadowed by RE4.

Japan making a game starring a black woman is indeed pretty worrying, but maybe she'll actually be a well done character and not a bland Current Year Mary Sue.

You know what Forspoken weirdly reminds me of? Secret of Evermore.

Dude Japan has done tons of brown girls in games at this point in all varying styles.

DMC 5 had them, Monster Hunter, Legend of Heroes, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc.

I think these might be western writers or at the very least westaboos. The fact one of the prominent characters is a fucking activist is too obvious.

I don't know much about isekai shit, the ones I've watched recently took the piss with the concept.

That said a fair few do have concerning undertones.

Ainu are not black, though. Most brown/tan characters in anime tend to be Ainu, right?

lol no, they are mostly Osakan. But there are definitely Japanese games with black men and woman in leading roles. (Ainu is a really strange thing to pool)

Dude, you wouldn't believe how many people think Ainu characters are black.

I haven't seen games from Japan that had black men or women in leading roles. Like maybe supporting cast, but nothing leading.

I can see why you read it that way. But as someone who works in software dev (not games thank fucking god)... there was a HUGE cost to developing Luminous Engine. FF15 was such a shit show there was no way they were going to claw that back, and indeed it was always FF14 that carried SQEX through that era. There was always going to be some new project, since FF15 wasn't it, that tried to recoup those costs. The very, very earliest teasers of Forspoken were just as much of an engine demo as the recent game trailers. Nothing woke about it at the root... just a corporate need to Cover That Cost.

I had a bit of a retard moment so I was thinking more anime. But I would consider a "side character" like barret as a leading role, especially in the remake.

I had my own retard moment, I thought the Ainu were more southern in Japan. Not entirely sure why I thought that, but still I've seen people claim Osakan characters are black because of their tan. I've seen some claim Ainu because they tend to be more gruffer, but honestly I can't say I've known many characters to be Ainu after all.

EDIT: And again, I don't care that she's black. I care that they're going for Hollywood tropes and Hollywood leftist bullshit in their marketing.
