I'm enjoying all this console war debate, feels like 2006/2007 again.

It's been a long time since people took console wars seriously because circa 2013/2014 it was plain as day obvious who was the winner and who was the loser, now there's more actual room for debate.

For Xbox this is a generation of QoL first and foremost it seems, which is fine by me. I never really cared about the exclusives past the 360 era anyways.
Last time a Microsoft exclusive was really interesting was Alan Wake, that marked the end of their creative peak.

But who knows what the future holds, they have some stuff that's been dormant since the original Xbox era I'd love to see them bring back like MechAssault or Crimson Skies.

They're making a new Fable, which is interesting to me (I always liked that series even though it never lived up to Molyneux's absurd hyping)

Wrong. It's a corporation-thing in general.
Microsoft was also afflicted by the same "3rd console curse" of arrogance after their 2nd console was a big hit alongside Nintendo, Sega, Sony, & Atari.

It's simple really, when a company sees the army of consoomers they've accumulated embrace their brand as a lifestyle and their logos as religious iconography, it's easy to understand why they think they can serve their congregation shit and get away with it.
Yeah, now that you point it out it does seem like a console company always fumbles with their third one.

It's funny you think Nintendo doesn't please woketards even though they donated millions to BLM and bent the knee multiple times to the DNC as far back as the 90s.
Those anime titties though, dude.

In all seriousness it doesn't impact the games themselves much, who cares if the US PR types toe the line? What matters to me the most as a gamer is the actual games.

>tfw a subscription service and Switch have more value than owning a Sony PS5

Yes, I'm aware PC exists but I'm speaking in context with consoles.
lmao, you picked the perfect facial expression.

This age-old maxim will always be true:
Nintendo × PC Master Race
The PS2 was absolutely worth owning too, although a lot of it's stuff did also come to PC, but not everything (MGS3 Snake Eater for one key example)

I think the original Xbox was also worth owning for some of it's exclusives.

But yeah, you're right, fundamentally a Nintendo console and PC is the best way.

PS3 was the shittiest era by far imo, by and large the worst Sony has ever done:
- a console that was absolutely shit to develop for
- by and large abandonment of their classic series (crash, spyro, jak, etc)
- super expensive without a lot to set themselves apart from the rest.
Frankly the only thing that makes the PS4 not as trash by comparison are that they didn't make the thing so damn complex that nothing games could be made for it and they brought back a lot of classics to it, along with better price points. None of that would've mattered if Xbox wasn't content with fucking up everything at every turn tho.

This generation is almost certainly going to be another huge fuckup for sony tho. Xbox out the gate is swinging hard with the Series S as an option and made a massive power play by swallowing up bethesda. Meanwhile, Sonys getting rid of a ton of legacy content by taking down the PS3 and Vita stores, and pissing a lot of people off in the process. Nevermind a lot of promised games (7R parts and Beyond Good and Evil 2) almost certainly coming out on PS5 exclusively
It was, PS3 stank and ruined a certain momentum video games as a whole were on that it never really fully gained back, Sony dropped the ball, no way around it.

But the PS3 did have a few highlights, namely the Uncharted series, God of War 3 and The Last of Us.

I dunno Spiderman outsold most of those titles, and that doesn't really fall into movie game. You also have Ratchet and Clank coming up that's a 3d platformer.

They actually pushed God of War Ragnarok back a full year because it wasn't finished and they made the world more open than the previous one. I think cutscenes are going to be done away with because they put emphasis on next to zero loading times so cutscenes will no longer be used as a mask for loading shit.

The one thing I can't stand is cinema walking where they intentionally throttle your movement speed to make it more dramatic. But like Yakuza, Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider and a bunch of others all do it. It's especially annoying when you're trying to get a collectible.

Don't forget The Order: 1886.

Sony needs to embrace the likes of Crash, Spyro and Jak again. Well, Jak is a bit dark even then. Go back to having mascots.

I feel that last point is a bit of a stretch.

The series S is basically the Microsoft equivalent of the PS5 Digital. Bethesda are an infamously shit company so two shit companies making it clear that they deserve each other is nothing new; and if we're being honest, people are making a bigger deal of that PS Store thing than they should. This is why you buy physical copies of games, people. I'm eternally grateful for being able to play the legacy MGS games on PS Now, but that's not the same thing.

Otherwise I definitely agree about the PS3. It was a massive mistake and considering Microsoft were making absolute power moves in the 2000s with their releases, it's hilarious that the console that could, back then, support true HD (Yes the XBOX 360 had HDMI too but games were still stored on DVDs) was not exactly what pushed gaming forward.

I'll never forget feeling ripped off buying a PS3 just to play MGS4. What a massive pile of shit that was.

They are, part of the whole Activision deal they're getting with exclusive COD game modes is that they're also getting exclusive deals for Spyro and Crash.

Sony always sucked, let’s be real
I'm gonna have to agree with you on that. Yes, even the PS2. That overpriced, overhyped, ugly little black box with its two controller ports compared to the chad 4 rocked by the Gamecube, Dreamcast, hell, even the OG Xbox had 4 controller ports out the box! Want that for the PS2? Gotta pay $40! You guys complaining about how the PS5 has "no games" keep forgetting that your pwecious PS2 (and arguably the PS1) had the exact same problem during its launch window.

All the reasons that everybody hates on Sega's Saturn could also apply to the PS2! It was reportedly a nightmare to develop for. It was twice as expensive as the competition ($300 compared to the $150 of the Dreamcast). Sony had shipping difficulties and couldn't even keep them in stock, and the few that were on the market kept failing! "ThAt StUfF OnLy SuCkS WhEn SeGa DoEs It! BoW DoWn To ThE EmOtIoN EnGiNe!" Granted, Sega kinda deserves the blame for their own downfall, but you cannot tell me that the hype for the PS2 didn't at least accelerate the Dreamcast's swift death. Fuck Sony.
Nintendo's rereleases are of generally okay quality and they want me to pay $10 more for a game I got for my eighth birthday. It's taking the Mick.
It's even worse than that. They want you to pay full goddamn price for a few games that you can emulate in better quality for free. No fucking thanks.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA
I actually watched Serial Experiments Lain for the first time early last year. While some of it is unquestionably dated, other parts of it are extremely prescient for their time:
If people can connect to one another, even the smallest voice will grow loud.
Astro's Playroom is one. Lol.

Did you miss that they're being investigated by the DoJ because they now own too much anime?

I don't think ever in history that this has happened where one has exceeded the legal limit of anime. I mean Jim Ryan wasn't lying, for all intents and purposes.
OK, DoJ, where in the ever-loving FUCK were you when Disney bought up Fox, hmmmm? Or is owning 40% of the film market not enough of a monopoly for you?
Bloodstained is exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about, I want to see all those noteworthy Japanese devs come back and make their own Bloodstaineds, in particular the masterminds behind Team Silent, a "Bloodstained but it's Silent Hill" would be faaaaantastic.
That already exists:
lone-survivor---button-000-1546996701122.jpg

Seriously, play this game if you haven't already. Is really gud.
To be fair in point 13, we could round up a list of Konami and Capcom IPs that they have willingly sat on for years without but a mention in some horrid gacha or the mandatory pachinko cameo. Still doesn't excuse them.
Don't forget Sega! Jet Set Radio, NiGHTS, Vectorman, Ristar, etc.

ALSO WHERE IS MY SKIES OF ARCADIA REMASTER, YOU LAZY FUCKS
Only Xbone exclusive that was really worthwhile was Sunset Overdrive. A game that now has a PC port. I can dress up as a member of a crossover thrash band and kill energy drink monsters while listening to punk rock and doing parkour. What's not to love?

Seriously, Sunset Overdrive is awesome. If you're running a CPU with a higher boost clock speed than it's stock clock speed, ignore the warning that pops up when you start the game. It runs fine once boost turns on. Hope Insomniac can make another game like this one day.
Ayyyyy, my nigga! Sunset Overdrive, funnily enough, when looking at it and the Spider-Man game side by side, feels like a practice run of sorts for that game. Except this is one of those rare cases where the practice run is a billion times better in every way than the "real thing".

I feel inclined to defend the PS3 somewhat if only for pure nostalgia. I was in my early teens when it finally started getting games, and those years were some of the most fun I ever had with video games. It felt exciting. I adored the games that were coming out like Uncharted, Infamous, Metal Gear Solid 4, God of War III, and the Ratchet and Clank Future games. The technology started to feel like it was marching forth from the PS2 and into areas that were not possible in the sixth generation. It certainly helped that the PSN had the PlayStation Classics section which not only allowed me to revisit my early childhood with Spyro but also allowed me to experience games I was too young for like the classic Resident Evils and Silent Hill. 2010 to 2013 was one of the most fun times of my life. If there was any time in my childhood where I felt the most happy in terms of gaming, it was that. Hell I'm still using my PS3 for stuff like Netflix because my PS4's Internet connection is so lousy it almost never loads in Netflix most of the time.

Thing is, I'm not blind to the sheer problems the system had. Even as a kid I felt the sheer dearth of games those first few years; about the only games that really stood out were Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and LittleBigPlanet. There really wasn't much of anything until 2008 or 2009. There's also the fact that most of the multiplatform games that made it to PS3 were optimized like ass. Constant framerate issues, downgraded graphics, endless audio problems, if you went PS3 to play games like Grand Theft Auto IV and Mass Effect you got gypped pretty hard. Ever since I got a gaming PC, I've been re-buying most of my library from that era because, quite frankly the PS3 ports were garbage most of the time. Not to mention, the later models of the PS3 removed backwards compatibility, which really ground my gears when my old fat PS3 bit the dust and I got a Super Slim. And speaking of not being built to last, the controllers took a huge hit in durability; I went through like three or four of the damn things throughout the entire seventh generation, while my PlayStation 1 controller from like 1998 is still working.

Don't get me wrong, I totally get why a lot of people didn't like the PS3, and looking back it did start a large number of gaming trends I'm not fond of (I love Uncharted but I fucking hate the cinematic gaming genre it spawned). It's just when I think back to that time in my life and what the PS3 offered I can't really bring myself to hate it. It's probably the last console generation I enjoyed, or at least the generation where I enjoyed the exclusives enough to justify the console itself.

You know what I just fucking remembered out of nowhere while out of it as hell right now? Playstation Home.
For those that have no clue what the fuck I'm talking about, Playstion home was essentially a weird glorified chatroom f2p game thing Sony made that also advertised other companies games via worlds you could go to, but there were cool built in minigames in some of the worlds, and sometimes shit like a replica of the cantina from star wars as the lucasarts world. No idea if there's any surviving footage of these worlds or pirated backups but there was a hudsonsoft one that had a bomberman game where it was literally just bomberman multiplayer with your weird player avatar as the character instead of bomberman. People would probably still be exploring that weird little game if it wasn't killed when the ps4 came out.
The game also had dlc and micro-transactions which is like a double burn of sorts now that the things just no longer accessible. Some of the shit was like 100 fucking dollars. As in, Sony was charging 100 dollars for some fucking DLC for a game they killed off when the next console came. No refunds.

A list of games that led sony on the path to fuck over everyone except their precious "games as movies" initiative: Uncharted series, God of War and the last of us.
I'm going to admit, I like the "games as movies" thing, I wouldn't want every game to be like that but I think it's perfectly fine sometimes, it's just another way of making a game, if it's not your cup of tea that's fine but there's nothing objectively wrong with making a game like that if that's what a developer wants to do.

Just think of it as the modern version of "cinematic platformers" ala Prince of Persia, Flashback, Another World etc, I don't know why so many gamers react with pure hostility towards the very concept of a game *gasp* evoking the feel of a movie, as if they fear that every game will become like that but that's never going to be the case, there's always going to be "game" games too.

They actually pushed God of War Ragnarok back a full year because it wasn't finished and they made the world more open than the previous one. I think cutscenes are going to be done away with because they put emphasis on next to zero loading times so cutscenes will no longer be used as a mask for loading shit.
Wait, what? That's not coming out this year? It's not coming out until fall of 2022? Fucking hell, that's the main reason why I wanted a PS5.

Guess it's really not something I have to worry about getting anytime soon.

Don't forget The Order: 1886.

Sony needs to embrace the likes of Crash, Spyro and Jak again. Well, Jak is a bit dark even then. Go back to having mascots.
It's lonely being an The Order: 1886 fan, I just don't get why people were so hard on it, it's the only game to briefly fool me into thinking I was watching real footage, that's cool, why don't people think that's cool?

It wasn't perfect but I can guarantee you had a sequel been made it could have been something really special, like the leap from Uncharted 1 to 2 was, instead people just freaked out about it for some reason and sunk what could have been a great franchise, I just don't get the weird hostility towards that game.*

They do need to bring back mascots though, I think Jak ended on a high note but I'd love to see a new Sly Cooper.

I'll never forget feeling ripped off buying a PS3 just to play MGS4. What a massive pile of shit that was.
I wouldn't call it a massive pile of shit but it was disappointing considering I was convinced it was going to be the best game ever and it was absolutely the main reason why I bought a PS3.

But there's just something about MGS4 that's lacking when compared to 1-3 and I couldn't even tell you why exactly, despite a few cool moments I mostly just look back on the game and cringe, too much hype and too high expectations I guess.

Folklore needs a remaster just to remove the loads everytime you open a menu
I tried to play it in 2015 and all I could think was how much I wished it was sharper looking, because I believe it's upscaled 720p and the art style was begging for at least 1080p, it would be a great candidate for a remaster, but if that never happens I still definitely plan on going back and finishing it one day because wow, what a unique game and one of the only PS3 games that carried on the high spirit of creativity Japanese games during the PS2 era had.

The PS3 is old enough now that my attitude has softened and there's definitely some nostalgia for it now, but it still doesn't change the fact that Sony hyped the thing up as the biggest thing to ever happen in video games and they just did not come close to delivering at all.

Remember things like the flat out lies of that Killzone 2 "trailer"? Arrogance is the word and their arrogance killed a certain momentum video games were building that never really came back or at least it either took a long time to come back or never came back for Sony.

*I still hold out a vague hope for a sequel but I'm not at all counting on it, especially after RAD got bought by Facebook.

PS3 is a mess, it was a bitch to program for, they rushed many games out in the early days such as Lair which could have been good with extra time it needed, sold it at $599 while still losing money. And that is just a few of the issues, but by the end of it's life, got to say PS3 had a great line up, full of so many gems. It's a shame so many big ps3 games like Infamous, the Ratchet games, Killzone and the such will be stuck on the ps3 but also so many other games that are lesser know as well.

A few of the great ps3 only gems, which never got ports.
The Last Guy

Puppeteer

3D Dot Game Hero

Siren Blood Curse

Tokyo Jungle

Folklore

PixelJunk SideScroller

Sad to think you won'te able to buy these games due to being digital only or they will cost an arm and a leg to buy for the retail ones, Bright side can always mod the PS3 and pirate them.

some other great ps3 games
Rain

Yakuza Dead Souls (okay this one is super janky but still enjoyable)

Drakengard 3 (and this one runs like 20fps most of the time)

Trash Panic

Echochrome

Afrika

Katamari Forever

Initial D Extreme Stage

Dark Mist

only reason i remember it is because the one time i used it, i was talking with a suicidal Italian guy.

Man people really slept on the Killer Instinct reboot huh? I would say they will definitely make a sequel but they're kinda screwed on doing that since the developer of Season 1 got bought by Amazon, and Double Helix doesn't seem interested. Not really any other FG devs in the west that are available, and as good as the game would probably look if it was made by ArcSys they probably wouldn't understand how to make a good KI game.
Doubt they would ever make another MechAssault since if I remember correctly it's a rights nightmare due to a bunch of factors, not to even mention Harmony Gold being dickheads.

Siren Blood Curse
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the only made in Japan horror game to follow the PS2 formula that ever came out or at least the only direct follow up to a PS2 horror game on the PS3, right?

RE5 and RE6 do not count as survival horror, The Evil Within did later come out on PS3 but it was an all new game and was pretty different too, I'm talking survival horror similar to what it was on the PS2 or sequels to PS2 horror games on the PS3, as far as I know Siren Blood Curse is literally the only one, right? Other series like Fatal Frame jumped ship to Nintendo.

That right there is a perfect example of why the PS3 was a massive downgrade over the PS2, all those great horror games on the PS2 and we get a grand total of one on the PS3 with the cherry on top being it's a remake and not even an all new game (though from what I understand it's fairly different than the original)

Forgot about this one, thanks for the reminder.

While I haven't played the full game and it's not a horror title, Folklore is the only Japanese game that I'm aware of on the PS3 that reminds me of something like Rule of Rose.

The PS3 damn near killed the Japanese game development scene though thankfully they did survive, but still in a crippled state thanks to the PS3, thanks Sony.

What's the status of this game in NA? How expensive are copies and can you buy it digitally?

I didn't care about the Killer Instinct reboot because it was one of the first times they stripped the sexy women out of a series, as a very casual fighting game fan I don't care if there's no hot girls, B Orchid was so lame in the reboot = I don't care.

That's just my personal view on the matter, people can feel free to disagree.

Doubly true for big companies, if I remember correctly a huge percentage of Japanese companies are basically zombies being kept alive artificially through some kind of government interference.
That is correct, the ties between big business and the government are even more strict and corrupted than in the Western Hemisphere. Also, keep in mind that the worst that could happen to someone in authority in Japan is "losing face", even by proxy. So no, I'm afraid Sony will be kept alive until the bitter crash of the industry.
