I don't see how they're really competing with Steam since they're releasing their first party games on Steam at the same time. Could that change down the line, yeah. I personally don't see it happening though. You don't really own any kind of digital game anyways unless it's a GOG copy or something. The exclusive version are seemingly because they paid for the port like with Nier Automata, which is on Square Enix being lazy shitheads and letting a decent chunk of their playerbase have to install a mod for the game to function properly. The Evil Within was stuff that was seemingly already in the game in the Bethesda Launcher version and they just ported that version over instead of the Steam version because why not port the version that has more content. All of this could obviously change down the line if Spencer retires or something but the second in line would probably be Matt Booty who has a history actually developing games and has a history of being hands off with mandates and stuff like that.
I dunno it's pretty much mirroring what Microsoft has done on the PC front for decades.

They are competing with Steam because if they weren't they wouldn't be making their own online storefront with a launcher and with improved versions of games to draw people from other storefronts. They're trying to fight a corporate war on two fronts, long term I dunno how that could work out. But they're mostly geared towards service based stuff which would draw people away from new releases on Steam than anything else. Online Only Multiplayer games are hard to predict people people will need to leave the established ones in droves or there would have to be a new FOTM ones like Fall Guys and Among Us. For example games like Monster Hunter never took off on Xbox itself.

I don't think anyone with a brain is actually buying shit from the Microsoft store since it's a coin flip if it's gonna be a pain in the ass. The people using the Xbox launcher on PC are pretty much only doing so for gamepass, which is typically a different kind of customer. With stuff like Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 4 being in the top sellers on Steam I don't see them abandoning Steam or even trying to compete with it, just trying to cast a wide net, the same way they aren't making the windows version of Office compete with the Mac version of Office. Could be wrong but it doesn't seem that way to me.

They're essentially changing their network set up from the ground up. Xbox Network is greatly expanded from Xbox Live and stuff that's grandfathered may be difficult to sort through. They may make it that any users outside their ecosystem will need to log in through an Xbox Network Account just like many other companies that use steam like Ubisoft. Just how how when they bought bethesda it took them about a year to sort out all the pre-established contracts. It's the start of a generation so there's really no better time to do it, Just like how Epic Store and Bethesda's own launcher revoked and changed shit after the platform became more established, it's usually better to give these things time to sort them out before you fully commit. Similar to how you don't just don't get on the ground floor of every MMO and usually let it develop to see if it's worth investing in.

Microsoft as a whole has become very dependent on service based stuff so it's really no surprise that their game division is pushing it.

Honestly though I'm still going to be buying physical so I have zero interest with anything online service based(I'm not going to trust stuff that's not saved to disc), since the Bethesda purchase usually means any and all remasters will remain exclusive. I've been wanting to go through Oblivion again with the Shivering Isles expansion and the Xbox 360 version is the only one with achievements and it's looking like it's going to stay that way.

As far as them trying to fucking slap Sony and Nintendo around over backwards compatibility support, they're a billion dollar company. Don't use twitter and shitty journalist articles in an attempt to bitchslap the competition. Buy out some fucking airtime and youtube adds if you're fucking serious, make a fucking behemoth of an add campaign, because that's how the 16 bit era became so ingrained as the foundation of games, was due to the back and fourth advertisements that bombarded everything game related. Make up some bullshit ling like blast processing, put some fucking effort into it.

I dunno, I heard that over the course of many years having a console, as an adult, in Japan sort of suggested you were a perv and having a PC absolutely suggested your were a pervert. So mobile or portable became the norm. That's why the mass-migration of nip games happened. Please be kind, I was told this 15 years ago or so, it's part of why console development shifted to the western audience.

Yeah PC became the stomping grounds of porn games and in japan that's still very much true.

Now in China it's much different but it's become less about the games and more about showing off the hardware and a bunch of retarded shit like 6 foot tall PC speakers and a 70 inch screen. There's some real weird shit in China like having their motherboards come with plastic guns grafted to them. Honestly I'm kind of hoping western youtubers start picking this shit up instead of ordering garbage from wish.com. Chinese computers are like DekoTora.

Couldn't think of a better thread to put this in so I'll just post it here since I thought it was fucking hysterical. It was just announced that MLB The Show 21 is going to be launching into gamepass on Xbox on day one. So Sony is charging their customers $70 to play a game by one of their first party studios, while the competition is getting that same Sony first party studio added to a service most people on the console side already probably have. MLB is also seemingly publishing the Xbox version so MS probably payed the MLB and not Sony for it. If that isn't funny as shit I don't know what is, and if Sony fans aren't pissed at Sony for it I don't know what would make them.
Paying full price for a sports game is a ripoff in and of itself.

Isn't the Xbox Network thing just a brand name change? I would say that wouldn't really make sense since Xbox Live is a known brand and Xbox Network is a shit name but this is the same company that named their consoles Xbox One S, Xbox One X and then named their next gen console Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X.

I’m actually more disappointed that Sony’s higher ups made the studio that created Ape Escape shut down. Personally, I loved that game a lot.

If there is some silver lining to the whole Sony situation, it at least made me learn and appreciate more of the idea of jailbreaking the old handheld consoles of its time.

It's not just a brand change, they've already made changes to the Xbox Game bar on Windows 10 for better back end integration with the new Microsoft store.

The main goal is to push Microsoft as an ecosystem much like Apple does. You get their service bundles as a package which on the software end means you yourself don't actually own anything and are reliant 100% on their digital cloud services. You can already see the tiered system in place with the xbox game pass. They're pushing their most expensive one as the cheaper better deal currently. It's the same stuff they do with their business programs and plans.

I love Ape Escape but I do feel like it's possible the third game took it as far as it could go, I would rather a series end on a high note than keep going and become shit.

At least we didn't need a PS3 Ape Escape, I do think it might have been interesting to see it return on PS4, but now the PS5 might be a little too advanced? Like maybe the window has closed?

I don't know but I do know it sucks they shut the studio down entirely instead of have them do something for the PS5, there was a rumor they were in fact working on a new Silent Hill which I guess was bunk and that's really sad, I think it would have been cool to see a new Siren at least.

Despite Ape escape being generally popular, Sony has seemingly done everything in it's power to just fuck over the releases. Ape escape Million monkeys Was supposed to have A global release, then was changed to a UK exclusive release, and then just kinda quietly canned without any announcement IIRC. Instead, they released some of the less intense spinoff games and that on-rails shooter reboot attempt thing. This was like back in the PS2-PS3 era. A more modern example would be how they kept teasing us with a new ape escape for years only for the official ape escape account that was made for the anniversary and was clearly leading up to SOMETHING went quiet and then more or less left a message saying "we're sorry we didn't suceed in all our goals this year maybe we'll see you again sometime" or some shit like that. After the announcement that studio that makes ape escape is now fucking kill it seems it may very well be a situation similar to megaman legends 3 Where the game was well into development but the higher ups stepped in and shut it down for some dumbass reason. That's wishful thinking, I know, but I also hope sometime Megaman legends 3 Leaks, considering that game, unlike the constantly looming PS4 ape escape game, was far enough in development that they had a Demo for it with like the prologue chapter on the JP 3ds Eshop. If there IS an unfinished/axed ape escape 4 I want to see that too but yeah wishful thinking.

Speaking of Ape escape and Sony Bullshit stemming back god knows how many years Why in the hell did the 2 english reigon lock releases of the games have completely different voice casts despite having the exact same english scripts, and why in the fuck did the UK one randomly stop using the localized names after the first game? Shit always bugged the hell out of me and seemed like a result of frivolous corporate spending and incompetence even a a kid.

So wait, if the servers of the PS4 shut down and the internal battery runs dry, then also all the fysical games con not be played anymore? How likely is it that it can be jailbroken/patched out and does the PS have the same problem?

That sucks to think if they really were trying to bring it back for PS4 but it was canceled.

Some stuff Sony has done
1. No bc for ps1. ps2, psp and ps3 games, despite the PS5 hardware being more than capable for it, going off how emulation is for PC with lower specs than the PS5. They did have PS2 emulation for the ps4 but that shit was so half assed no wonder it flopped.
2. Closing down PSN for older console with not even a farewell sale
3. Not letting Vita devs who are still making games know that they would be closing the vita store down.
4. Fucking over Sony Japan, no marketing for their games, poor release timing such as Puppeteer, which is an amazing game but they left to it die coming out a month before the ps4 as a ps3 exclusive.
5. Making it hard to green light games for Sony Japan, the creator of Silent Hill could even get a horror game green lit after Gravy Rush 2.
6. Closing so many studios which did have talents behind them, Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge and Studio Liverpool, it really sucks with the last two because they made vita games which of course flopped because vita.
7. Only a handful of PS4 Pro / PS5 patches, some many games that really need them such as Bloodborne.
8. PS Now stil awful for streaming and capped at 720p
9. Lack of diversity in types of games, they used to be very good at this, now mostly cinematic games with a rare platformer and racing game thrown in.
10. Money hatting 3rd party games to stay off Xbox and sometimes PC for a year, instead using that money fund games that weren't going to happen with out the money.
11. So much bloat in many of their games, you could cut 10 hours off the Last of Us 2 easy and have the same shit story but least it would flowed better.
12. Game prices going up, up to over $90 depending on countries.
13. Letting so many ips to just rot and die
14. The PS1 Mini, they used a open source emulator for it which was shit, you could even modded the thing and install a better emulator on it which is just crazy. Also had 50hz pal games instead of 60hz ones for some crazy reason.

13. Letting so many ips to just rot and die
There really are quite a few that have either been dormant for a while or are obscure but have a load of potential for a second chance.

Some obscure examples that come to mind are War of The Monsters and Ghosthunter, I can so clearly in my mind's eye see Ghosthunter adapted to one of these modern over the shoulder "cinematic" third person shooters but it's so incredibly obscure Sony didn't even bother to actually publish it in the US, Namco did.

I also see potential in bringing back Siren, maybe a "new translation" style remake of the second game at least since that never came out in the US, but they closed the Japan studio.

And there's also Folklore, which I haven't played in full but definitely looks interesting.

For less obscure but still dormant there's Twisted Metal and SOCOM, Sony has been needing an online killer app for ages and it's already been almost a decade since the last Twisted Metal, seems like a prime candidate for revival and I was always bummed I never got to play SOCOM online.

Then there's the platformers and while I feel Jak ended on a high note and doesn't really need to come back, I would like to see another Sly Cooper.

Folklore needs a remaster just to remove the loads everytime you open a menu

I've been a snoyboy for life but I got an Xbox Series S and I'm loving it. Backwards compatibility is sweet and it can emulate nicely too.
Xbox is killing it on services, value and features right now, crazy how far ahead of Sony and Nintendo they are in those areas, just a shame they don't do many first party games that are my cup of tea.
