Wait which one of you fucks replaced my copy of Get Fit with Mel B with the absurdly valuable Pokemon Colosseum Bonus Disc, a disc that just has a couple of trailers and gives you Jirachi in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and that is the only way to do so without hacking tools so therefore this stupid disc goes for $160 complete in box because Pokemon fans will seriously pay three figures for a single pokemon, because they genuinely believe hacking the save file of a 19 year old game is a serious moral wrongdoing?

WHICH ONE OF YOU REPLACED THE DISC?!?!?! NOOO NOW IM GONNA GET FAT AGAIN
I didn't think the colosseum disc was that expensive. I remember getting it for a couple bucks because I wanted to collect demo and promotional discs.

It's been worth a mint for a while now. It was a preorder bonus for Pokemon Colosseum, which is also now a very expensive game.

Speaking of which, why don't you post images of them?

It looks better in hindsight since PS4 was mediocre at best, and PS5 is a joke so far.
I wouldn't consider the PS4 mediocre. It was leaps and bounds more accessible and consumer friendly compared to the PS3. You can argue the eighth generation was underpowered compared to their PC counterparts, but do not underestimate Sony's advantage from the Xbox One.

It also was a step down from PS2. Still good but has an obviously inferior library. It looks better in hindsight since PS4 was mediocre at best, and PS5 is a joke so far.
I think PS4 was in some ways a breath of fresh air when compared to the PS3, but it still paled in comparison to the PS2.

PS3 certainly wins when it comes to games with "The Last of Us" in the title though.

I could see an argument for either PS1 or PS2 as the pinnacle. I prefer PS2 because the games have mostly aged better, but for its time the PS1 was a juggernaut. Tough call.
PS1 was a juggernaut, PS2 was an even bigger juggernaut, I dare say almost every single person who played video games via touching a controller owned a PS2, it was an incredibly ubiquitous part of life in the 2000s.

I'm late to the discussion of retro games but I wanted to add something: in recent years the price of and interest in retro games (NES to N64 era mainly) went waaay up in part thanks to a few guys who own trading/grading businesses. I don't recall the specifics but one of them pulled this same crap with comics a few decades earlier.
Karl jobst made two videos on it

This shit is also why otherwise common games have ridicolous prices.
While I am aware that some NES or SNES games went for 80 to 150 dollars around 2011 and there was some whining in forums about used game shops selling carts in terrible shape without box or manuals for ridicolous prices, it wasn't this bad.
So it is not just obsessive fans and posers wanting to display their sealed copy of mario, it is a bunch of speculators and "investors" trying to make a profit.

Edit: I am rewatching the videos and I was reminded that some of these investors buy "shares" on a game, this is far worse than I remember

Or that fact that investors own the Grading companies. Think its the second video that had a game that sold for a lot and was graded high, but from pictures you could tell its grade was fake due to tears on the seal. They be rigging the shit outta the industry now.

The fact the PS5 has yet to reach an estimated 1 million game software units, after nearly 18 months in the japanese market, is really worrying.

Doesn't the Switch have it beat? Of course, you have to account for the pandemic as well.

There was a week in December 2021 where the Switch alone made up 98.5% of all consoles sold in Japan. https://www.vgchartz.com/article/45...-for-nearly-99-of-all-consoles-sold-in-japan/ PS5 was barely a year old, and Switch had been on the market for over four and a half years.

I'll bet if I dug around, I could probably find a week where even the Ouya sold better than the PS5 at the same points of their lives

I'm giving Sony the benefit of the doubt with the PS5 because of the pandemic. Although, Nintendo has more influence in Japan in the video game market than Sony.

I am just judging by its library. If you look at the number and quality of exclusives for PS4 it's worse than PS3, especially if you don't count the reboots, remasters, and remakes. In terms of wholly original games that are any good, it's pretty low.

A decent chuck of their AAA exclusives were woke trash like TLoU2 and Uncharted 4. Abby and Nadine are two of the absolute worst characters but the game sold and reviewed well regardless, I know, but they're still trash. Others were just regular non-woke trash/mediocrity like Knack 1 & 2, and The Order: 1886.

For every Bloodborne there was a Days Gone or two. And before the system even kicks the bucket a number of their games are heading to or are already on PC.

Many of PS3's good games remained exclusive, and there were more of them. They didn't lean as heavily on remasters, reboots, and remakes in that generation yet either.

I think that makes PS4 at least comparatively mediocre, previous Sony consoles were better. If you look at the entire history of consoles then PS4 is still probably near the top, I'm not going to pretend it's Jaguar or CD-i levels of bad. Still, PS4 is no PS3.

In terms of being more accessible and consumer friendly, I guess so. It has its advantages, I'm sure. It has disadvantages too though, like requiring PS+ to play online. I also personally prefer PS3's controller. Backwards compatibility was also nice.

I think PS4 was in some ways a breath of fresh air when compared to the PS3, but it still paled in comparison to the PS2.

PS3 certainly wins when it comes to games with "The Last of Us" in the title though.
Was is really though? I was underwhelmed especially at launch. Even little things like the UI were inferior, PS3 & PSP had a very good user interface.

Part of this isn't Sony's fault but a lot of games, especially in established series, put out trash sequels on PS4 like FFXV and SFV. I know people liked Resident Evil VII & VIII but they're just spinoffs as far as I'm concerned, they don't resemble the series I'm used to at all.

So, to a degree, it's a matter of personal taste, I admit. There just wasn't much for me to be excited for.

PS1 was a juggernaut, PS2 was an even bigger juggernaut, I dare say almost every single person who played video games via touching a controller owned a PS2, it was an incredibly ubiquitous part of life in the 2000s.
Yeah, everybody had PS2, it was crazy. Those were the days.

Sony abandoning the Xcross media bar was a mistake. It needed modernization, but it would of been better than what the PS4 has.

Not really, Japan's game market is dominated by mobile which make up 75% of the market, you're talking anywhere around 5-8 billion in total for consoles which would put it around france or germany when it comes to console sales. Sony kept their Mobile studios that were associated with Japan Studio. Those were not closed because they were making money.

Fuck elden ring made 11 million sales outside of Japan. The Japanese sales were not the driving force just like how most JRPGs sell in western countries.

You keep pushing this nationalism bit that japan will suddenly wipe out/banish the Liberals/SJWs from all media. But it's not going to happen, that whole scenario is a fantasy because it ignores the larger picture. The only loyalty these companies have is to money, they will adhere to anyone who pays them with exclusivity deals.

If you want a direct comparison the PS3 wasn't even at 10 million units sold globally at this point. Sony was in panic mode back then. They're not in panic mode right now because the playstation isn't in any trouble. It's the corner stone of the One Sony Policy and if shit was fucked it would be all hands on deck.

5-8 billion what?

5-8 billion what?
Japan game's market is listed at 20 billion but the vast majority of it is all mobile games, consoles are the minority. Mobile games are what pull double digit billions over there.

Japan makes up a third of all mobile purchases globally, that's where they put their spending power. If you strip away the mobile purchase the console purchase fall in closer to singular european countries.

It's size, America's game market in comparison is around 40 billion in total. They have a much larger user base when it comes to consoles. It's why companies like Sega/Atlus, Square, Capcom, and other Japanese developers target the west primarily at this point. The west was the reason why JRPGs exploded.

India and China have the most potential to be even bigger, but it's not there yet.

Well, hey, if the logic is that console games sell terribly in Japan so it was right for Sony to shutter their Japanese studios, then the death of physical media is also good. After all, the majority of people who play video games buy them digitally.
