ok. next sonic game im gonna talk about is one of the worst.

Sonic Free Riders. Released exclusively for the Xbox 360 on November of 2010 to promote the Kinect.

761470

Story: dr eggman makes a disguise and make another EX gear tournament with money as the reward and sonic and his friends enter it. it turns out to be a plot made by him for metal sonic to copy all the racer's data.

characters:
Sonic
Tails
Knuckles
Amy
Cream
Vector
Shadow
Rouge
E-10000B
Jet
Wave
Storm
Silver
Blaze
Dr. Eggman
Metal Sonic
Xbox Avatar
Super Sonic

the game was met with mixed but mostly negative reviews, it was considered to be one of the worst and most broken kinect titles. why was it bad?

the kinect is the only mandatory controller. nothing else works.
the controls can get really unresponsive, making the game unplayable
because of the broken motion controls, its even hard to navigate through the menu. even the tutorial.
grabbing rings and flying through air can cause frame rate drops.
playing in multiplayer is really awkward, because both players have to hold hands and the controls are even more worse and unresponsive.
characters wont shut up when riding their ex gears, they keep saying their quote when getting ready to boost.

the good points.
its one of the first sonic games alongside sonic colors to introduce the new voice cast like kate higgins for tails, travis willingham for knuckles, etc.
bike gears are more functionable
good graphics
the hang on gear is back and plays the hang on theme when used.
Metal City from the first sonic riders is a stage.
the soundtrack is awesome. especially its main theme Free

yea. game is shit. its a prime example why motion controls were losing popularity and why the kinect was one of the worst accessories for the xbox 360.

I played the previous version of this once at college when someone brought it into the gameroom. I immediately hated it when I saw Sonic running as slow as molasses when he got off the board. Fuck that heresy

alright. next sonic game. gonna rewind a bit back to the classic era.

this is one of the worst sonic games.
Sonic Labyrinth. released for the Game Gear

776162

the Story: Dr. Robotnik replaces sonic's shoes with Slow Down Boots. causing sonic to lose his ability to run and jump, but he still has his spin dash ability. sonic must now go into eggman's labyrinth and fight him, get the chaos emeralds, and get his original shoes back.

the game was met with negative and unfavorable reviews. why was it bad?

the game is the most sluggish sonic game ever known. its a sonic game that plays slow.
the game can get boring really quickly.
shit plot. eggman basically sneaks into sonic's house and instead of killing him in his sleep. he replaces his shoes. wtf?
the spin dash is hard to handle.
the game can get too competitive.
the final boss is pathetic.
the game can be beaten in less than half an hour.
every stage has a short time limit.
flashing effects that are obnoxious.

good points:
you can beat this game in less then 30 minutes, which is good because you cant really beat the other game gear sonic games before the game gear's short battery life runs out.

gotta go fast? more like gotta go slow. what in the world was sega thinking? :/

For the longest time I thought Sonic 1 and 2 on Game Gear were the original Sonic 1 and 2, and that's largely because the games were included on Sonic Adventure DX, and when you're a little kid in the 2000s with zero knowledge of Sega's output in the 90s, you don't realize that just because it is called Sonic 1 doesn't mean it was the Sonic 1 everyone is familiar with. I didn't realize there was a difference until I stumbled across the Genesis games. Hell even after that I still had no idea what the hell the Game Gear games were because I had no idea what a Game Gear was.

That being said, I liked Sonic 1 on Game Gear because it was a neat little platformer even if it was limited by its hardware, such as the inability to pick rings back up. Sonic 2 not so much because the game was brutally difficult and not fun. I've played the other Game Gear games but I don't remember anything about them other than that they were fun but somewhat bland.

I had the Wii version. It was a very good Mario Kart competitor, but weapons were a little weak. Don't know why they just stuck to Sonic characters in the latest one, when keeping it as a celebration of Sega characters is a much better plan in my opinion.
...Probably still gonna get the new one since the last two were good though

in my opinion, the xbox version was better, because they add more characters. including banjo kazooie themselves.

this is their all star theme.

Well it had better hardware, so I would hope so, but the Xbox library doesn't do it for me in any generation, good theme though. Should get into that game sometime, missed out on a lot of Nintendo classics since I was a Sega/Sony guy for a long time

Ps3 version is the same as 360 sans banjo and the avatars

Hot take: this and Colors are better than the Adventure games. While the Adventure games are more creative and ambitious than the “boost” games, they’re also a lot jankier (at least when it comes to Amy, Big and the overworld hub in SA1 and the mech stages and many of the treasure stages in SA2), with earlier 3D platformers like Crash Bandicoot 2, Spyro the Dragon, and Mario 64 often feeling more polished by comparison.

Keep in mind, this is coming from a guy who partially keeps his Wii around just to play SA1 and SA2 on backcompat

The 3DS port was kind of decent, but I was kind of disappointed in how bare-bones it was. Mainly because I was almost done with it after an hour and I was spoiled by how good the story was in some of the previous Sonic games.

great game.
I've probably said this before in this thread, but I really want to like Generations but I can't stand its controls. I've bitched enough about the extremely stiff 3D controls that actively fight you if you go anywhere other than forward, so I'll bitch about something else, namely the 2D platforming. The first half of the game is alright, but the second half is when I lose patience, specifically starting with Crisis City. For some reason, Sonic's jump never works properly for me; I've lost count how many times his upward momentum abruptly stopped and sent me plummeting towards the lava. Sonic's jump feels so inconsistent, it's like a 50-50 shot for it to actually make most of the platforming jumps. And even when it works, Sonic feels like he weighs a ton which makes the platforming feel incredibly sluggish.

I feel like I'm going crazy when I play the 2D sections. Has this happened to anyone? Because it cripples the game for me and it's so bizarre nobody talks about it.

See I'm gonna disagree with you there, largely for the reason I stated above. Yes, the Adventure games are janky but their platforming feels a lot more consistent. At least when I jump in the Adventure games, I don't have to worry about the jump suddenly stopping its upward momentum and unfairly killing me.

In other words, at least the platforming works.
