There's surprisingly little derangement on display, these days. I guess they've all finally buggered off to bluesky, where they won't have their feelings hurt by people telling them men are men and women are women.
I think there's a couple of things at play here.
I think some of them don't understand the joke, sure, and I think some of them do understand it's a joke, and are just deliberately choosing to interpret it in the world possible light in the hopes that they can make Rowling look hateful/unhinged/pathetic.
But I also think you have to bear in mind that a lot of trannies have very little theory of mind, and tend to think that people see the world as they do, I assume because so many of them are some shade of autistic. They
attribute their own thoughts, motives, or emotions to her, because they are unable to properly model another mind as separate from their own.
J.K. Rowling is taken extremely seriously by troons, so they believe that she takes them extremely seriously in turn. They've created a role for her in their heads as the final boss of transphobia who must be destroyed, so to them, it stands to reason that she spends her days thinking up ways to genocide them, like
some kind of bizarre comic book villain.
"I feel X toward you, therefore you must feel X toward me."
This is extremely common in people with low theory of mind, poor mentalisation or weak self–other boundaries. She
can't just be making a flippant, facetious comment, because that implies that she finds all of this amusing - this has to be a sign of her absolutely insane, genocidal hatred of trans people.
