How about finding out that un-id-ed amulet in your inv was a amulet of life saving. I've had it happen before.

:story:

I don't bother ID'ing my inventory because it doesn't help me at all. I mean something you knew you had that would definitely have saved you.

I had that happen earlier today. Found a cursed amulet and figured it was probably something terrible like sleep or strangulation, so I held on to it to j-e-w a shopkeeper out of some gold later on. Died to team A, went through my possessions, and found out it was a cursed amulet of life saving.

:stress:

Also, no joke, my last two runs I've found three magic lamps. I always bless it and make sure my luck is positive, and every single time the djinni comes out hostile. According to the Nethack Wiki, that's a 5% chance. Apparently I'm just the unluckiest motherfucker alive.

Edited to dodge the wordfilter

Bumpin' this because I'm a huge faggot and made a duplicate thread.

On my endless quest to get a 15 rune win with a pure caster. Just finished snake pits, but the other lair branch is shoals, so I decided to dip my head into the elven halls for some more books. Ordinarily I run Sif Muna on conjurers so I can get hold of blink more reliably, but this time around I found Vehumet pretty early, so I went with him. Orb of Destruction and Freezing Cloud are online, Hopefully I'll be able to get Tornado or Glaciate cast-able by zot, then it's smooth sailin'

I've been playing Hades since it finally left Early Access and it looks pretty gorgeous.
After 14 hours of play I'll give my thoughts about the game, but tl;dr "meh".

Hades is a story about Hades's son, I'd be fucked if I remembered his name, so I'll call him Sedah, who is trying to escape the underworld against his father's wishes. Getting help along the way from the Olympian gods. This being the god of death's son, you can't really die and just resurrected upon dying in the lowest depth of hell, where you started the climb.

I'll start with the story, it's barebones. The only real plot is discovering about Sedah's past. Character relations are very much known if you read the first thing about greek gods or from the character introduction and there is no real progression aside from romance sidequests. The end result is that there's nothing plot-wise that really pushes you on, everything is static and unchanging and there's no real world building since you already know the setting by common knowledge.

But this lack of world and interesting character developement be excused with good gameplay, but sadly Hades doesn't really deliver here. The gameplay is that you start each dungeon run with a set weapon and pre-bought abilities and slowly get more abilities/resources as rewards from the rooms you explore, with each god having his brand of skills he can give. There are a few problems with the formula:
1. The biggest problem is the lack of variety. There is only a single dungeon, with the amount of different enemies is very small and the bosses are even more repetitive, with the four stage bosses only slightly changing between runs. Until the game gets an update that adds new bosses and dungeons, this alone makes the game something I would not recommend, since after you cleared it once there is nothing new to see beyond very few unlocks and setting a higher difficulty.
2. The game is not balanced weapon wise. Barring getting some insane combo of abilities from gods, range attacks are just as strong (if not stronger) than melee attacks and are far safer. Add to it that fights can be too chaotic to get a good view of an enemy telegraphing an attack and no standard ability to get healed mid-fight, the gameplay turns most of the time into kiting the enemy to death. This is especially bad on the last floor of the dungeon, where you are fighting in tight corridors against rodents of unusual size that spray poison when you get close, with the poison status shaving your health quickly.
3. The economy of the game is pretty fucked. There are multiple resources in the game, broadly seperated into common resources you can find in random rooms and unique resources you can only get from bosses (sometimes). That sometimes is because there is some insane mechanic where bosses won't drop those resources if you already beat them with the same weapon and haven't died enough times beforehand. By the 14 hours mark I don't have anything to waste most of my common resources on, but a fuckton of things that require unique resources that will probably take me dozens of hours of grinding the same bosses to get through. There is a shop, but getting a method to turn common resources to a unique resource is very rare and pricey.
4. Lack of ability to decide how to advance in a dungeon. The dungeon is linear without ability to backtrack and try other routes, just pick a next room (if you even get that option). So any attempt to grind more encounters to increase your skills are out of the window. You can equip charms to get the RNG more in your favour to get specific gods to spawn, but it comes with its own share of grind.

I don't mind the game all that much, but the material grind is one of the two things that really doesn't sit well with me. Only having six "gimme" opportunities to earn the higher-end materials (that only give you one of each, naturally), then forcing you to either hoard all of your money on a single run in the hope you make it to the last shop that might sell one of them at an outrageous sum, or grind up piles upon piles of common materials over several runs to get enough of a trade chain to get one or two of the mats is, frankly, a crock of shit.

The other is how the devs, and a depressingly large amount of the player base, insist on calling it a roguelike. Risk of Rain 2 might give you unlocks, but you only have one life and start with sweet fuck-all every time; Tangledeep can be turned into a proper ball-buster with permadeath; even motherfucking Dungeons of Dredmor hews closer to the true spirit of "Oh, you died? Fuck you, start over from scratch, suck less next time" than Hades. Binding of Isaac, Stoneshard, Delver, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Barony, Spelunky - you can throw stones just on Steam and bounce off of other games that understand the difference between roguelite and roguelike: "Grind up incremental bonuses over dozens of dozens of runs to secure victory" versus "Learn underlying mechanics (occasionally via getting sucker-punched by them), put your knowledge to use, start back from square one every time you fuck up". When game journos are properly calling it a roguelite on the motherfucking Steam store page, but the devs and fans can't be assed to get it right, everyone who continues to Do It Wrong™ is in need of a fierce remedial dickpunching to erase the shame, at the very least.

caves of qud is the best of the "new" roguelikes

tome is good too for the diable type feel of shredding through lots of enemies and getting a ton of loot, and being able to share items between characters is pretty neat

could never get into gungeon, but nuclear throne is still excellent

There's no rush. When that guy appears or anything else absolutely fucked happens you should immediately get up and go do something else for a bit. My least favorite way to die is with something in my inventory that would have saved me but I was saving it for something else, apparently in the afterlife.

Speaking of Demogorgon, my favorite for this guy is to have a wand of wishing and
wish for a blessed cockatrice corpse.
Just make sure you have gloves on. It's the one more or less guaranteed way of safely disposing of that fucker.

Or you could just polymorph into a cockatrice and lay a bunch of eggs for the same purpose.

My first win was actually with a DECj Vehumet worshipper. Once you get going, you're borderline unstoppable.

Good luck with the Tomb, though. Better hope you find the Necronomicon, otherwise you're in for a rough time.

Does anyone here play The Binding of Isaac? I've abandoned this game after the update, that added Apollyon, because it fucked the balance even more. Has things improved since then or just went further into the shitter?

I haven't played it in years. Ever since you needed to buy DLC in order to play community content.

I tried getting back into ADOM since the move to steam, and I invariably run into a menu crash that loses the entire character by the time I'm finishing up either the village or druid dungeons. Real shame it's broken like this, the new content looks interesting and worth digging through since my single ULE many years ago

I used to play a ton, but I got really burned out when trying to get all The Lost's unlocks and haven't played it in a few years. Fuck The Lost.

Agree 100%, but if you think about it, it's the charm of these games, right? You try, try and try, but then - BOOM - you did it! And feels so good. I still can't forget how I beat Mega Satan with Lost, it was like my favourite team winning.

"What do you want to engrave with? s - a zinc wand"
"You may make a wish. What do you wish for?"

Motherfucker, I'm on D:7! I haven't even found Sokoban yet!
How is this run going to fucking explode?!

I still play the original Rogue, monochrome ASCII... I don't think anything quite beats the aesthetic of the original ASCII Rogue, it gets quite addicting.
