how are you suppose to kill hades with a melee build? the bow and gun makes him easy to chess even with bad traits but too much shit just happens during his fight (worse in phase 2)

Elona is getting a sketchy mobile game spinoff with the original developer's blessing.

Anyone hear anything about it?
I mean, maybe it's not so ba
The community is somewhat mixed considering that it's "Free" compared to the actually free that the original was. It is a fairly faithful recreation of the original game, however, any house fancier than a Cozy Estate requires "Diamonds" (real money) to purchase, allies can be acquired via a gacha system, and shops reset on a real-life timer instead of an in-game one.
aaaaaand into the trash it goes.

Support Fire, careful footwork, and lots of dickpunching.
It gets [better/worse] when you go up with the final rank of Extreme Measures.

I feel the need for ARL but I'm not super excited about the Isaac expansion having played a bunch of it recently. Any other new good ones in the last month or so or in the near future? Loop Hero is the only one I've run into that I've enjoyed and it felt more puzzly than I wanted due to how heavily dependent on metaprogression it is and how once you figure out how to win it's almost 100% consistent.

The answer to this is almost always dashing, especially if you're playing high heat. Get in, hit and get out as fast as possible especially if you've got Doom on-hit or any of the on-dash effects like lightning or drunken fog. Hopefully you'll have picked up a duo that involves one of these by the end of the game as well. If you're playing with a gamepad try moving dash and melee to L/R to save yourself some carpal.

The music is a mixture of MIDIs from the original, and bland and generic new themes that are no-where near as catchy as the original themes, which clash considering the gap of music format quality.

Also, they turned Jure of Healing into a generic magical girl.

Personally, I haven't touched it because I treat mobile games like the plague, nor do I consider it a replacement for fan-made variants like Elona+.

Gacha seems like a weird choice for a pay source given how the original game's companion system works. I guess that was kinda how Scroll of Ally worked but since you can grind basically any stat there isn't any reason to pay for a high-tier companion unless they really screwed with the leveling system (or Speed still matters and since it is always the most annoying thing to grind). Most gacha games need a constant source of new content to keep player's interested, I'm not sure how they'd manage to do that with the Vanilla game's weapons and companions without feeling like they need more even at launch.

Art style looks...maplestoryish I guess? I don't really mind given that the in-game original Jure looked like this

and Mani is best god anyway

I'll probably try it out when it actually comes out and report my findings, since my tolerance for mobile trash is unusually high.

Roguelike players often specialize in specifically choosing to do things that seem completely impossible. I remember one Nethack player in particular who would do ascensions with absolutely ludicrous restrictions like "never eat food ever" (in a game where you die from not eating food). And that wasn't enough for him so he was also atheist (never pray or interact with an altar). My best ascension was an atheist vegan Monk who also never used weapons (Monk is actually the best class for weaponless though). Foodless is for absolute crazy people though.

Monster balls still exist, apparently, though I'm not sure if other sources of allies (Slave Driver, Rod of Domination) still exist, but they probably still do.

As for Jure, I was mostly reporting the community's reaction, as a lot of people don't really care for the new design compared to the original one (Myself included).

But by all means, if you want to try it, go right ahead. Feel free to let me know about your findings.

I could never figure out Elona, even after getting into some of the games it built on, like ADoM. I just find the whole game incomprehensible.
Not sure what it is about Elona you couldn't figure out, although I am aware the game does have a steep learning curve. For instance, the way stats work isn't exactly intuitive and the game never explains it, it just expects you to able to know that "Tactics: 23.529 (149%)" means "Tactics is at level 23, at 52.9% progress towards leveling up, with 149% Potential," Potential being an experience modifier any time you gain experience towards that skill.

Plus, the vanilla game isn't balanced perfectly and thus results in a shit-ton of grinding that fan-made variants attempted to address. Elona+ for instance makes spending platinum coins at trainers much cheaper for a flat increase of Skill Potential, where-as in vanilla the price would've rapidly increased as your skill leveled up with diminishing returns the more potential the skill had. Meanwhile, Omake Overhaul includes such changes as rebalancing many of the perks you start with at the beginning, such as changing stat increases from a flat +4/+8 (which will quickly become obsolete) to making them a percentage-based buff of said skills, which makes them much more useful.

Nah I get it its an entirely reasonable fan reaction. If they don't give you a little girl on entering the first town then what even is the point?

The Wiki is helpful if you're confused and trying to figure stuff out, and the Wiki is also where you download the game in most cases so you know where it is. I guess I just like complex games.

Honestly platinum coin spending isn't really a problem in Vanilla Elona. It only got to be an issue when you reached higher levels, and since the Final Boss wasn't that tough you could clear the game before you had really grind. + and Omake have more high-level content so the grind got ...well it was kinda designed to be a bit grindy but got beyond its specs when you're trying to grind a character that could have killed everything in the base game with its eyes closed.

IMO the newest version of Elona+ kind overcompensated with the Training Days thing. It got too easy to grind :(

Oh trust me, I keep a tab open on the Wiki open at all times when I'm playing, even as someone who has played it for years and has clocked over 500 hours on a single character. It's especially helpful when I'm playing a newer version of E+ and I come across an item or enemy that I've never seen before.

As for E+'s rebalancing, yeah I kind of agree. I always thought the +20% potential to any skill was a fine enough rebalance, but then Ano goes ahead and quintuples the amount of potential you get from trainers. Also, it looks like I'm playing a version that's before the introduction of the "Training Days" you're talking about. Having searched it up, it looks like it's a triple experience modifier to various skills, so I see what you mean when you say the grind has become much easier.

Yeah, I really enjoy roguelikes. I'm probably not the only one who has awaken it's inner gamer during whole corona situation. You know, my company right now literally pays me to watch series or play games because there is no new tasks.

Problem with roguelikes I have is that I really enjoy them, but because they are so niche I cant find people to talk about them. And it is impossible to convince your friends to play them.

So, I've played 3 quite a bit: Nethack, ADOM and Caves of Qud. No wins in nethack, couple wins in ADOM and I don't think that CoQ even has wins. I also played a bit Brogue, but I cant really get into game without even a basic titleset. All ascii is too rough to me.

Of those, I feel like despite being deeply flawed, ADOM is best game. There is something so mesmerizing about this game. Even though some of puns there are physically painful. Lightning lizard has shocking taste and orc tastes as old pork. Thomas, I want you to apologize for that.

So, do you plays roguelikes? Right now I feel kinda washed playing them, but I might be able to stomach one more if I haven't heard about it and is interesting.

Played a bit of CDDA and it's fun despite me not being any good. The best starter is of course to pick blackbelt and pwn all the zombys without a weapon.

As for Nethack, I usually get stuck on the first or second level because the exit doesn't show up. It's also really irritating that your horse is bad at signalling it's hunger level.

Roguelikes rule and there are niche ones but there are also a lot of mainstream modern roguelikes, not sure if you're aware. I'm sure you'd even be able to convince your friends to give them a shot.

Games like Hades and Dead Cells are fantastic rougelike games with great graphics and gameplay, you should totally look into them.

The Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup developers have a fetishistic fascination with gutting out every gameplay mechanic, lately they've replaced the hunger mechanic with a generic instant death timer, after an update that removed ration variation. There must be dozens more games that are being systemically disemboweled by their tranny developers in the same fashion that this board's SS13 players were griping about.
But the player...will forever subvert the developer. ~Sseth on the eternal suffering of those developers who inflict the fate of their genitals onto their video games)

I was pretty into Tales of Maj'Eyal for a little while. I suggest anyone who likes classic roguelikes to check it out.

Edit: Some recommendations for more modern/different roguelikes for those interested: FTL (Faster Than Light) is an amazing roguelike where you control a ship and crew to race to the other end of the galaxy to fight off the rebel menace. So many ways to handle combat or avoid it entirely, ship upgrades, different races, ect. It's a roguelike that makes you feel like a starship captain. You can do shit like divert power from the engine to the weapons systems if your battery is damaged, shit you hear in Star Trek and all that. Loop Hero is a newer game with a twist on the roguelike formula, being a combination of deck builder. The whole world has been consumed by the void and even time and space are twisted beyond recognition. You collect cards that change the layout of the world while your character walks around it to automatically fight and collect loot, great game and very addicting. Noita is a roguelike side scroller where you can basically create your own spells. You can create a lightsaber and rapidly stab enemies with it, summon rain clouds of oil that can be turned into massive walls of fire, or with a combination of certain spells and passives you can become a living bomb running into everything and blowing shit up, super fun.

Wait seriously? Glad I stopped playing that train wreck years ago. You sure it was a tranny dev and not the typical 'indie dev has no idea why his game worked?'

I havent heard about CDDA, but might want to check them out.

As about Nethack, I could help you with a thing or two. There are always exists on each level. If they dont show up, you have to search for them. Press 's' and you search in all 8 adherent cells. Also, the whole room layout always "fills" screen, so you can have good guess where to look for.

I see you are man of culure as well becaues knight is also my favourite class. You chat with your horse with '#" and typing "chat" or I think alt+c, but I'm not sure. Maybe crtl+c. When your horse whickers it is fed, when it is hungry it whinnies. Also big use of pest is detecting cursed items. They wont step on cell with cursed item on top of it, or step reluctantly.

You know, I manedget to show nethack or adom to my friends and they were mindly intereseted, but sheer amount of effort needed to learn roguelike is too off-putting to them. Also I would not call those two games, roguelike, even though they might be decent games!

Havent played a DCSS. I heard good thing, but I watched presentation about it on roguelike celebration. Guy seems to be too smug, probably not too aware about other roguelikes and also pronouns. Rub me wrong way in every way possible and his presentation was plain bad.

ebin reference my Tourist friend

I liked Nethack as of 3.4.3 but dislike the changes they've made post-3.4.3. CDDA is very good, Incursion was promising but never really got finished, Brogue is good for quick pick-up games, Tales of Maj'eyal is fantastic if you are absolutely set on having graphical tilesets.

DCSS is still really good despite the developers best efforts to ruin it. I saw it coming a mile away a few years back when they removed a weapon that had the name "Sword of Jihad" or something like that, because using the word "Jihad" might be offensive to sand people. Then later they genderswapped a bunch of unique enemies because there were too many males and equality in roguelikes matters. And most recently, there was a unique enemy who used to have a bunch of slaves that would attack you, but if you killed him and not the slaves the slaves would become friendly. But a few days after the ol' George Floyd BLM chimpouts, right when all the corporate social media shills were posting #BLM to their twitters, the DCSS devs removed the enemy's slaves and replaced them with generic monsters. I shudder to think about all the faggy changes I haven't noticed.

Despite all this, DCSS still remains one of the best classic roguelikes. For now.
