The anime is kind of what really made the games sell as well as they did early on so for many people all over the world that was their first exposure to the thing and it's partially to blame for Pikachu being the mascot and Charizard getting as much love as it has.
In Japan.
I'm talking about the JP POV purely because over there the series reallly popped off after it debuted
That's not exactly true over in Japan either. Red/Green didn't immediately sell amazing there since it was a new series that was released without that much fanfare, but while it didn't sell particularly high in the first month, it had unusually strong legs and kept selling well month after month. It hit a cool 1 million copies sold in September, which was still 7 months before the anime's debut. Things were also helped by stories of Mew being hidden in the game code and being found via bugs being spread by Coro Coro magazine in April. When Pokemon Blue was sold in October via a special distribution where you had to order through Coro Coro magazine, they got more than double the expected orders, leaving the magazine's publisher Shogakukan swamped with order forms they were struggling to process and getting claims from people about not getting the game they ordered. Used copies of Pokemon Blue were getting sold on the second-hand market at the time for as much as $100.

All of that was before the anime was released in April 1997, and it only started pre-production in August 1996. It certainly helped blow the franchise up to even further heights, but it was already building up momentum fast even before it came out. In fact there was some argument at the time over whether to make it, since one side thought it would capitalize on the game's success at a good time to blow it up further, while another side was worried it could kill the momentum they already had if it was bad or if people thought Pokemon as a whole was over once it ended.

Mega Hawlucha revealed. NGL, looks way better than what the leaks said. Bro got buffView attachment 7842244
I like it, but then again I like Lucha Libre so I'm a bit biased in its favor.

I have mixed feelings on Mega Victreebel though. If Scolipede is getting a Mega like some leaks are saying, I hope it's a good one like Hawlucha's, since Scolipede is a personal favorite (Bug types are awesome).

The problem is that (as confirmed by that massive leak), GF is trying to implement a realistic art style into the games which is making Pokemon look like those weird 3D Disney movies as opposed to stylizing like they used to do back in the day.

I think if they try to stay true to that early anime style they had things would have aged a lot smoother IMHO
I'd like to see them make a mainline game that had the watercolor style of the early gens, but in 3D.

The list hasn't been wrong yet. This was posted to the thread in May:

Hawlucha is 100% accurate, down to the midsection feathers being gold like its boots.

Also Anonitolia clearly just didn't like it since I know he's grown pessimistic of Pokemon recently...oh come on, have some enjoyment. It ain't that bad.
I don't dislike it, I just think it's meh. The main thing that irks me is that the mega looks way better from the back.
1756407954491.webp

From the front, it just looks like Hawlucha with a funky mask on. If they'd colored the arms black or made the feathers under its arms completely golden (instead of just golden-tipped in the back), it'd be pretty great. As it is now, it's got Shiny Helioptile syndrome.
1756408073908.webp 1756407579612.webp

It looks better in fanart, as always. Look at this:
1756407657002.webp
See? This looks pretty neat. It's still a perfectly fine design. Just got irksome colors.

Anyways, I disagreed mostly because it's nearly identical to the leaks. The only difference is that this design has more bits on it. The muscles aren't even very pronounced, to the point where I had to compare head sizes to confirm that, yes, the mega's body is indeed bulkier. I found the leaked design pretty boring. This is still pretty boring. Therefore:

NGL, looks way better than what the leaks said. Bro got buff
Disagreed on both fronts.

@Retarded Weeb what I was trying to say is that the perception of how the anime portrays certain Pokemon influence game freak after they saw the way the anime bought them to Life.

Morimoto said after he saw Pokemon the first movie he teared up and it for the first time made him realize that they (GF) had succeeded in creating he lived in world and from time to time the staff at olm will request certain things to be done to make things easier on them and sometimes things they do creep into the games.

Ask for hawlucha, I think they did a really good job with him, but I do know that single stage mons getting a Mega evolution over a traditional Evo will be an eternal debate.

I always kind of pictured the hawk as being kind of a underdog, so I think a mega evolution in this case is a happy medium for him.

It also seems like we could be getting weekly Megas so I wonder who they're going to show next?

Haunter for design aesthetics, Gengar competitively

Whatever generation Noivern is from, that thing is kinda cool too.

Also, a fansite called the Johto Times did something similar to this, they held two polls, a preliminary poll where you could choose your top 6 Pokemon from each Region, and a second one where you can choose 3 from the top 10 of each region combined. The preliminary voting ended in mid August, but the final poll is still up and will close on September 30th (link).
Here are the preliminary poll's results:
KantoResults2025.webp JohtoResults2025.webp HoennResults2025.webp SinnohResults2025.webp UnovaResults2025.webp KalosResults2025.webp AlolaResults2025.webp GalarResults2025.webp PaldeaResults2025.webp
And some factoids about the results at the bottom of the first page I linked:
  • The Kanto poll was the most popular poll that fans engaged in, with 86,868 votes, cast by 14,478 participants.
  • Umbreon received the most votes of any Pokémon in this stage of the poll, with 4,412.
  • Silcoon was the least voted Pokémon out of every Pokémon at this stage in the poll, with just 12.
  • Paldea received the least attention, receiving only 55,524 votes, made by 9,254 participants.
  • Every single Pokémon in our poll received votes, not a single one was overlooked!
To absolutely no one's surprise, the top votes include Gardevoir, Lucario, Eevee, Gengar, Charizard, Pikachu, Umbreon and Greninja, and I bet 100% that one of these will be the winner. To my surprise, Corviknight is the second most voted Pokemon despite being recent and coming from the least voted generation.

I guess you underestimated the badass appeal of a GIANT FUCKING RAVEN IN BLACK ARMOR! That's almost like something a grimdark story would do heh.

If we're going by "Mons I love" rather than "Mons I thought are most useful", then (excluding legendaries):

Gen 1: Pidgeot, Ninetails, Persian, Golem, Hitmonlee
Gen 2: Crobat, Feraligatr, Umbreon, Tyranitar, Houndoom (honorable mention to Misdreavus)
Gen 3: Swampert, Linoone, Shiftry, Spheal, Metagross
Gen 4: MISMAGIUS (hence the earlier honorable mention), Empoleon, Luxray, Gallade, Lucario
Gen 5: Zebstrika, Krookodile, Joltik, Haxorus, Oshawott
Gen 6: Noivern, Florges, Aegislash, Delphox, Hawlucha
Gen 7: Rockruff/Lycanroc (all forms), Kommo-o, Rowlett/Decidueye, Salazzle, Vikavolt

I see you stealing prompts from /vp/'s catalog :tomgirl:

anyways, instructions unclear. Ended up doing a top 10 because it felt less restrictive and for reasons you'll read about later.

For gens 3 and 5, this is basically irrelevant. I really like over half of their dexes and outright love a good lot of designs in them. Ask me tomorrow and I'll give you a different top 10 for them, probably. Same goes for pretty much everything pre-7, to a lesser extent.

Alola onwards I was really struggling to come up with 10 designs I even liked, to the point where I had to toss out my original idea of "10 for original designs, 10 for regionals/other gimmicks" and stick to 10 outside of Kalos. It's also very important to clarify that from Alola onwards, designs stop representing entire families and start representing individual designs. For instance, I love Hypno and Drowzee near-equally but slightly prefer Drowzee. I'm a big fan of Walrein's entire line, but Walrein is my personal favorite of that line so it gets to represent the whole thing.
None of that applies from Alola onwards. I passionately dislike everything past Litten. Hisuian Arcanine blows, as does Galarian Rapidash. Floragato has a shit first stage, a shit final stage, and an even shittier fanbase. Etc. The only real exceptions are Type: Null, Applin, Armarouge, Espathra, Hattrem, and Galarian Corsola.

Also worth noting that the only reason gen 3's roster has starters in there is because I didn't want it to come off like I didn't like the starters. I love the starters. If you asked me to pick a favorite I would murder you and then cry. I wanted to make that known without choking out more than 1/5 of the top 10, so I just stuck to the absolute two best designs of the original trio and forced myself to leave it there.

Last time I did this was on January 15th, 2023. Before the Scarlet/Violet DLC, about three months out from the game leaking, and during a time when I was still formulating my opinions on generation 9 (beyond the instant dislike that has yet to pass). I figured it might be interesting to see how my tastes had changed between then and now...
top_10_of_each_gen_1.15.23.webp
...quietly ignore that I forgot to add a separate top 10 for megas in generation six here...
...only to notice that they'd barely changed at all, outside of growing more resentful of the Paradox forms and ditching them entirely (with one exception). For reference: this basically never happens with generations I actually like. If you compare 2023's top ten generation 2 mon with 2025's, for example, you'll notice a huge amount of discrepancies. Same goes for generation 5, generation 3, etc. My top 10s can never properly solidify for these generations because I just like many of their designs too much to ever properly decide.

There are some exceptions to this, of course-- I don't exactly love Sinnoh, but my top 10 is basically unrecognizable save for the top 3. I'm not a huge fan of Alola, either, but its top 10 is pretty different too. The latter is mostly due to a weird phase where I had Xurkitree, Nihilego, and Blacephalon pegged as a "headless trio" that I didn't want to separate for some reason; otherwise, the top 10 would look pretty much identical to now (save for maybe the subtraction of Alolan Sandshrew).

Generation 8, though? Pretty much identical, with some mix-ups in ordering and more Hisuian rep. Generation 9? Half-identical, with the only real loss being Quagsire's cooler older brother and the lazy rehashes I said while putting Paldean Tauros in my 2025 list. And that's after two rounds of DLC.

Anyways, you can probably see why I'm not entirely enthused for the Z-A megas. To say the least.

red = personal favorite; top 10 design of its generation
yellow = top 20 of its gen
blue = top 30 of its gen

And the only designs I outright dislike here are Barbaracle, Dragonite, and Hawlucha
fun times ahead

I don't see Pikachu anywhere on those images, which is surprising but nice to see. Even as a kid I remember being annoyed at how much they insisted on shoving it down everyone's throats.
