chat, what are your top five mons from each gen?
I had to think about this a lot, since there's generally like 2 or 3 really obvious picks in a gen and then like 10 other Pokemon I would say I'm fond of but aren't sure if they'd be top 5. Overall, I think Gens 1, 2, and 5 were the hardest to pick only five from.

Gen I
Bulbasaur, Ninetales, Lapras, Eevee, and Mew
Honorable mentions to Sandslash, and all the eeveelutions which Eevee is partially standing in for.
Gen II
Typlosion, Furret, Mareep, Umbreon, and Suicune
Honorable mentions to Espeon as it and Umbreon are the best eeveelution set, Raikou and Entei because the beast trio are the best minor legendary set, and to a dozen other Pokemon
Gen III
Sceptile, Blaziken, Mightyena, Skitty, and Milotic
Gen IV
Mismagius, Purugly, Garchomp, Porygon-Z, and Giratina
Gen V
Serprior, Lilligant, Zoroark, Chandelure, and Mienshao
Honorable mentions to Samurott, Archeops, and Garvantula
Gen VI
Delphox, Furfrou, Dragalge, Carbink, and Noivern
Gen VII
Primarina, Lycanroc, Lurantis, Mimikyu, and Lunala

top 5 Megas (because they need their own section)
Ampharos, Mawile, Manectric, Banette, and Absol

top 5 regional forms (because they also don't really fit in a single generation)
Ninetales, Typlosion, Samurott, Lilligant, and Zoroark
Honorable mentions to Growlithe (but Hisuian Arcanine is kind of meh), Marowak, Rapidash, and Moltres
Looking through them, I feel like Hisui has the highest average quality in regional forms. Maybe it's cause they had some kind of art direction in making things look old Japanese in some way, or maybe just cause of who was art director. Too many of the Alolan and Galarian forms just feel like dumb jokes.

I haven't really played SWSH and SV much, but I can make a prelimary list of Pokemon from those gens just based on the designs.
Gen VIII
Thievul, Frapple, Appletun, Polteageist, and Frosmoth
Gen IX
Meowscarada, Skeledirge, Chien-Pao, Hydrapple, and Raging Bolt

I guess you underestimated the badass appeal of a GIANT FUCKING RAVEN IN BLACK ARMOR! That's almost like something a grimdark story would do heh.
Apparently so. It's an awesome design and one of the better gen 8 Pokemon, but I never expected it to surpass popular mons from earlier gens like Eevee, Gardevoir or Garchomp.

I don't see Pikachu anywhere on those images, which is surprising but nice to see. Even as a kid I remember being annoyed at how much they insisted on shoving it down everyone's throats.
I'm so used to seeing Pikachu in popularity polls that I didn't even bother double checking :sighduck:

But yeah, I never much cared for Pikachu, but I love Raichu and seeing it get left in the dust despite (or maybe due to) being the series mascot's evolution always annoyed me.

The Farms had very varied taste for this one! No surprises, I guess, given Kanto's reputation and general popularity. Cloyster was a surprise favorite. I've never seen anyone profess their love for it, and yet...

For the sake of clarity: families include evolutions added in following generations, including mega evolutions, but not regional forms. I figured it was just less messy this way, because otherwise I'd have to split the results in a way that led to Porygon showing up in three different generations and the Snorunt family polluting every third generation. Also, Charizard would be fucking everywhere. Megas will have their own section in generation 6, as will regional forms later down the line. Not Gigantamax forms, though, becaues nobody likes those lol.

Save for the lack of Cloyster on the poll and Arcanine on the Farms, I'd say it's accurate enough. No surprises that basically nobody here mentioned Charizard, it's the most normal-person favorite ever. And us Farmers are probably as far from normal as you can get without reaching concerning levels of immorality.

Hilariously unanimous in comparison to Kanto. Even with only 2/3 the amount of Pokémon that gen 1 had, I think the amount of answers here got cut in half. There's some actual competition for the top spots, but opinions seem to be pretty unanimous: the starters, the legendaries, the psuedo-legendary and eeveelutions reign supreme. The Mareep and Zubat family are pretty much the only exceptions, and that's probably because you find them very early on and they're useful throughout the campaign. Somewhat poetic that the top two spots belong to a Johto starter and a Johto evolution to a Kanto Pokémon.

I'm very surprised that not a single soul here mentioned Scizor in any capacity. It's way more popular than Scyther usually, but nobody here even gave it an honorable mention. Kleavor got more love. Very strange!

A nice mix of the above two generations! Votes definitely clustered around a certain few, but there was a pretty wide breadth of Pokémon mentioned here. No surprise that Flygon tops the lot, but Ludicolo got a surprising amount of love and a lot of "fan favorites" get to share their spots with forgotten interests like Grumpig and Skitty. The starters still reign supreme, though, which I guess is to be expected given their (rightfully earned) popularity.

...the Farms is a weird halfway point. It's definitely got Flygon, the starters, Aggron, Absol. However, Rayquaza is completely absent; Gardevoir doesn't even make it into the top 10. Metagross' family is significantly less popular, as is Sceptile's, and the starter love is mostly concentrated in Swampert. Pretty weird! Glad to see Armaldo and Ludicolo getting more love over here, though. They deserve some appreciation from time to time.

In a grand rejection of the "Sinnoh team" meme, the Farms gave at least one vote to almost a quarter of Sinnoh's dex! This generation is by far the weirdest, taking popular conceptions of Sinnoh and turning them on their heads. Mismagius won the popular vote, for god's sake, Staraptor never stood a chance. Interestingly, Staraptor is also absent from the Johto Times poll. I wonder why? It used to be insanely popular. Maybe the overexposure from Legends: Arceus, BDSP, and SV all in a row soured a lot of people on it.

Come to think of it, cross-generation evolutions absolutely dominate this poll. Another subversion of Sinnoh stereotypes, given how controversial they were on release! I wonder if that's just because a lot of the people here seem to be older fans who started with generations that got a lot of love in Sinnoh? Who knows. It's fun to speculate!

Compared to the Johto Times poll...

...it's night and day. Johto Times' poll overwhelmingly favors original designs, with the eeveelutions being the only real exceptions, while the Farms is almost exclusively cross-generation evos. On top of that, Johto Times gives the starters way more love than they got on the Farms. In fact, Kiwifarms picked the only final-evolution starter not to appear on the poll-- Empoleon-- to give all its starter love to. Interesting!

8 participants (9 in honorable mentions)
This is where the polls are going to start thinning out, because the already-small pool of participants starts shrinking even further from here. I guess it shouldn't be surprising, what with how controversial Unova was, but I'm including this heads-up anyways just in case you notice the shrinking rankings.

All that aside-- this is the first generation with an absolutely definitive winner in the individual designs category! Congratulations to Haxorus for taking the top spot! From being maligned as a "#NotMyPokemon" overdesigned dinosaur on its debut to being unanimously beloved four generations later, this underdog's got a story worth celebrating.

Corny shit aside, this poll was surprisingly condensed. The bugs got a lot of love, as always, with a heavy slant towards the rounder bugs as opposed to sharper designs like Leavanny or Escavalier. Zekrom, too, which was surprising. I never really hear it mentioned, but it got a lot of love here. I'm guessing because Reshiram has certain connotations on this particular site that are best avoided. :story: Lubby chudder's bigger brother stole all its love. Sad!

It's not too far off? Reshiram is completely absent on the Farms I wonder why :story: but this isn't too far off otherwise. Zoroark get significantly less love, presumably because most of you aren't diehard furries, while the Johto Times poll prefers starters more than bugs. Haxorus is also far more beloved here than it is over there, though Chandelure, Serperior, and Krookodile still get lots of love.

8 participants (9 in honorable mentions, 3 in Megas only)
Okay, this is where things start getting really messy.
With the addition of Mega evolutions, I'll be making a separate poll for just those. They'll still be included in other polls, alongside their existing evolutionary families, but they'll get some spotlight too just for fun. I'll replace them with regional forms for all the following generations, with regional form status taking precedence over cross-generation evolution (eg Cursola would be in Galarian Corsola's family, not Johtonian Corsola's). I'm leaving them out of the "individual designs" poll simply because everyone except me seems to have stuck only to original designs for their rankings, and left Megas completely separate (if they were included at all).

Headaches of modern Pokémon aside... considering the size of Kalos' dex, this is a shockingly diverse turn-out. Lots of love for less popular designs here; Dragalge and Clawitzer don't get mentioned much in more mainstream discourse, and Delphox discussion is almost always trumped by Braixen coomers. I'm glad to see Delphox finally getting some love. More than Greninja, even. Poor Chesnaught is still left out to dry, though-- not a single member of its family could even secure one vote. In the same poll that gave Carbink and Pumpkaboo some attention. Jesus.:story:

Yeah, that seems about right. Save for the wildly different levels of popularity (Greninja gets a whole lot less love here, while Goodra, Sylveon, and Zygarde are completely absent), this is pretty close to what we've got. Notably, Dragalge is completely absent from the polls while absolutely dominating here. Interesting. I wonder how this would have changed with Megas involved in the ranking? Or maybe they were involved, and just didn't get enough votes to dominate?
...nah, I have a hard time believing Charizard X wouldn't show up on here if it was an option.

8 participants (3 in regionals only)
Regional variants are going to be treated like Megas. Left out of the individual designs poll, given an exclusive poll, included in the family-specific poll.

What a... useless poll. Barely any designs got more than one vote. There was barely even enough for a top 5. :story:
I guess this is kinda where a lot of people started falling off. Starters, legendaries, all the shilled stuff gets a lot of love here. Mimikyu is the only exception, as usual, and maybe the bugs if you want to be generous. Hell, even saying that any design save for Lunala got "love" might be stretching it. Really dire showing all around. At least the evolutionary family poll makes the site's tastes a lot clearer.

A-Ninetales dominates in the regional form poll. I guess you could say it got some love, too.

I guess they're similar? Mimikyu gets significantly less love here compared to the poll. Same for most of the answers, really. Lunala is the only stickler, taking the top spot here but not even making top 5 in the Johto Times. I'm sure regional variants being included here would have skewed the results more in favor of Alolan Ninetales, honestly, given its pretty universal appreciation.

Oh, boy, alright. I'm not grouping Hisui separately. In the regional forms poll, its forms will be added alongside Galarian regionals without distinction. Regional cross-generation evolutions, like Sirfetch'd, will be counted under regional variants. Usraluna and Kleavor do not count as regional, despite being mostly exclusive to Hisui, because they do not evolve from a regional variant.

With that out of the way: no surprises as to the winner here. Corviknight takes the crown by a country mile. Interestingly, Rookidee and Corvisquire don't get anywhere near as much love. Not a single mention in the individual designs pool-- only visible in the family-specific poll thanks to its final stage. I don't think many evolutionary families can claim such a lopsided fanbase.

...wow, there really are only 10 or so lovable Galarian designs, aren't there? Save for the starter love (ew) in the Johto Times, their poll is pretty much the same as the Farms', even accounting for popularity. Corviknight got twice as many votes as the second-place mon in both cases. Zacian is probably more popular with the Johto Times for its meta dominance. Otherwise, not too much difference between these two.

Paradox and Convergent forms are getting lumped in with regional variants for the sake of both my sanity and sticking to the Johto Times poll (which seems to exclude them). Koraidon and Miraidon are the only exceptions because they're box legendaries. Kind of sucks, since Walking Wake would probably take a top 5 spot otherwise, but oh well.

Fat fuck takes the cake here, blowing Ceruledge out of the water, claiming the top spot that got super split up between evolutionary families this time around. It's kind of funny how there are basically nodesigns past the first two areas of the game that get any love, excluding legendaries. I think Kingambit and Greavard might be the only exceptions. Otherwise:
  • Ceruledge, Espathra, and Garganacl's families are found in the first area to the east
  • Cyclizar, Squawkabilly, the starters, Annihilape, and Dachsbun are found in the first area to the west
  • Dipplin and Cetitan can be found in the first areas you go to in the DLC
Interesting. :story:

Anyways, I'm surprised at how much love the alternate forms got this time around. It practically made an entire parallel list. One with a lot less concentration of favoritism, too. I had no clue this many people liked Paradox Pokémon in general, let alone more controversial members like Raging Bolt. Funny how 2/3 of the top 3 are just the Paradox Beasts when people spent so long complaining about or being confused by them on release. How the turns table.

...it's way off. Ceruledge is far less popular, Tinkaton doesn't appear at all, Fuecoco is far less beloved and the entire list is pretty wonky in terms of popularity. There's no telling what it would've looked like with Paradox Pokémon included, though something tells me that Iron Valiant and Roaring Moon would be pretty high up there.

Take all these groupings with a grain of salt; given the extremely small pool of voters here, some generations (like the first) basically just amount to top 3s with a make-your-own podium. I just thought this would be a fun waste of time and wanted to share it with you all. :)

chat, what are your top five mons from each gen?
Transparency/clarity: I'll include regional variants as the gen of their initial region, but I'm disqualifying other forms like megas/G-Max etc. for their temporary nature. In no particular order:

Gen 1: Ivysaur, Raichu, Vaporeon, Dragonite, Mew
Gen 2: Furret, Togepi, Mareep, Heracross, Ho-oh
Gen 3: Mudkip, Mightyena, Flygon, Milotic, Jirachi
Gen 4: Infernape, Luxray, Froslass, Cresselia, Shaymin
Gen 5: Victini, Oshawott, Audino, Lilligant, Volcarona
Gen 6: Gogoat, Tyrunt, Sylveon, Goodra, Diancie
Gen 7: Golisopod, Mimikyu, Magearna, Raichu-A, Vulpix-A
Gen 8: Appletun, Cramorant, Ponyta-G, Ursaluna, Zorua-H
Gen 9: Dachsbun, Farigiraf, Slither Wing, Koraidon, Ogerpon

I'm very surprised that not a single soul here mentioned Scizor in any capacity. It's way more popular than Scyther usually, but nobody here even gave it an honorable mention. Kleavor got more love. Very strange!
Scyther is just cooler than Scizor. I think everyone knows this, Scizor just gets more love a lot of the time because it's better in gameplay.
Wooper is for wholesome chungus appreciators
Hey, Quagsire is a loveable dope like Psyduck or Slowpoke. Something being cute in a dopey way isn't quite what gets into my top 5 though. Maybe my top 10 if we were going that far.
However, Rayquaza is completely absent
It almost was in my honorable mentions, but I was cutting those down as best I could so my post wasn't too unwieldy. It's pretty much the perfect Pokemon representation of an Eastern dragon. I bet a lot of us were subconsciously avoiding putting it in our top 5 so we looked more unique, especially since it's a box legendary.
I had no clue this many people liked Paradox Pokémon in general, let alone more controversial members like Raging Bolt.
Raging Bolt looks silly, but I think it has some interesting ideas justifying it to where it's not just a joke. It plays with how the beast trio have manes representing wind or clouds by having Raging Bolt's mane be up around its head with its long neck and patterns on it giving the impression of lighting striking down from thunderclouds. And the fact that it resembles a giraffe can be a play on how the Japanese word for giraffe is "kirin", named after the mythological creature which fits with the original inspirations behind the beast trio (there's a few animals not native to Japan but were introduced to the country by word of mouth from China hundreds of years ago that were given mythical creature names because they were described as being sort of like that creature).

Walking Wake looks pretty cool, but it doesn't have any real interesting play on the original's design to justify it more. It's at least interesting for being rather feral looking, in contrast to Suicune being the most graceful looking of the original trio. I think Gouging Fire is the loser of the three. It basically just looks like Entei wearing a funny hat. Whoever designed that one was slacking off.
...it's way off. Ceruledge is far less popular, Tinkaton doesn't appear at all,
I get why Tinkaton is popular since it's a pretty unique idea, but I think there's something awkward about the execution of its design. Like it's kind of fat and blobby, and I can't imagine what it would feel like to touch it.
Ceruledge and Armarouge are cool, but they very much look more like Mega Man characters than they do Pokemon.

Agree, I purposely excluded stuff like Paradoxes and Legendaries in my list, but if I'd thought it through and added an "extra" list to include the Paradoxes I definitely would have. So: Roaring Moon, Walking Wake, Iron Valiant, Iron Moth, Great Tusk.

These lists are fun to actually force yourself to review the stuff you did in the games and explore why you'd like certain Pokemon yet not end up with those on your team when you played. Heck, some of these gens were HARD to narrow down to just 5 I liked, which kinda surprised me, because despite me loving them I just didn't use them much in the game itself. Even for games like Sw/Sh which I didn't play, I just picked stuff based off my initial love of the design and then say to myself "Yeah those aren't gonna be used at all, right?". Hypocrisy at play lmao.

Cloyster was a surprise favorite. I've never seen anyone profess their love for it, and yet...
I used it to great success in the Battle Maison and it's got a unique design, it's a smug clam with spear-like spikes on its shells. It's only issue is that it kinda resembles a vagina.
Lugia is for the mentally unwell
Based.
Zekrom, too, which was surprising. I never really hear it mentioned, but it got a lot of love here.
I'm glad. I mentioned not too long ago that it's my favorite Pokemon.
With the addition of Mega evolutions, I'll be making a separate poll for just those.
Wait, was I allowed a separate poll for Megas and Regionals? Fuck, gimme a moment.
Megas - Charizard Y, Salamence, Gyarados, Lucario, Ampharos
Regionals - Zapdos (already in my gen 8 faves), Decidueye, Braviary, Rattata, Samurott
Done!
Congratulations to Haxorus for taking the top spot! From being maligned as a "#NotMyPokemon" overdesigned dinosaur on its debut to being unanimously beloved four generations later, this underdog's got a story worth celebrating.
I was one of the people who said Haxorus' design was too tryhard, then I chose Axew in Gates to Infinity and now it's a favorite. Playing as a Pokemon can really change your opinion of it.
There's no telling what it would've looked like with Paradox Pokémon included
You could vote for them, I voted for Walking Wake in the preliminary polls. Apparently the Johto Times voters just weren't too fond of them.
Funny how 2/3 of the top 3 are just the Paradox Beasts when people spent so long complaining about or being confused by them on release.
Back when they were revealed I saw everyone here complaining about them and kept quiet, but the truth is I love dinosaurs.

I think I have used most the Pokemon I picked in an in-game team at some point, even if it was in Colosseum or XD, or as an HM slave. I also used Skitty as my main character in Explorers of Sky, that can count. A bigger thing to me was how many Pokemon I've used before and respect their design and what they can do, but I found I wouldn't say is a favorite Pokemon of mine.

Looking through my list, other than the obvious Mew, the ones from the first 7 gens I've never used are Mightyena, Purugly, Porygon-Z, Furfrou, Carbink, and Noivern. And there's some clear reasons for all of them.
・Mightyena has a clean design and I like that it started the trend of Route 1 Dark-types, but it's an underpowered Route 1 Pokemon in a game (RSE/ORAS) where you have a lot of strong options before the first Gym. Maybe I'll use one in my next playthrough of AS. The game is so easy that using an underpowered Pokemon might makes things a bit harder, and I hacked the game to be only Doubles so maybe I can get more mileage out of Intimidate.
・Glameow only shows up in Pearl halfway through the game (between the 5th and 6th Gyms) and is otherwise near nonexistent in the rest of the series. And it's not exactly super strong either, especially being a Normal-type.
・Porygon-Z I kind of want to try using, but team slots are competetive in Platinum. And looking it up, literally the only games where you can get a Porygon and Dubious Disc early enough that using a Porygon-Z in-game is at all reasonable are Platinum and PLA.
・As for the Gen 6 Pokemon, I've only seriously played through XY with a full team once and there were quite a few Pokemon fighting for team slots in that game, including older Pokemon like Azumarill so I could use it after it's part Fairy, or Mienshao because you can catch a Mienfoo way earlier in XY than you can in BW or B2W2. Carbink is cute, but just plain bad in gameplay. And Noibat shows up way too late, just before the 8th Gym. The game is almost over by then. I almost used Furfrou, but again several stuff fighting for a slot and it's a Normal-type. Maybe I'll use one in Z-A. Like how I used PLA as a chance to finally use a Glaceon since it's almost impossible to use in any other game.

Y'know, something a few of these Pokemon have in common is being Normal-type. So are the couple Pokemon I've only used as HM slavees (Furret and Delcatty). It's really hard to justify putting a Normal-type on your in-game team since you usually just want be OHKOing things with super-effective STAB moves if you can, and Normal-types can't really do that since nothing is weak to Normal. At best they can spam STAB Return while maybe having a couple decent coverage moves. They can counter a Ghost specialist by being immune to Ghost, but Ghost-types are also immune to Normal attacks, so they can't do a whole lot unless they learn Shadow Ball for coverage (which is a bit awkward in Gen 4 onward since the best Normal moves are generally physical).

The only Normal-types I've seriously used before were Ursaring in XD and Stoutland in Black, and something they have in common is that XD is Doubles only and my playthrough of Black was a Triples only romhack. It's easier to justify a decently bulky Normal-type in that case because while they might have no resistances except Ghost, they have no weaknesses except Fighting, so unless you're specifially battling a Fighting specilialist, it's a safe and easy option to fill out an active team slot with a Normal-type who can tank some hits and support their partner(s) who's throwing out the super-effective moves for big damage.

Zekrom, too, which was surprising. I never really hear it mentioned, but it got a lot of love here.
As a Reshichad, my default assumption growing up was that Zekrom was more popular because I couldn't find anyone else who preferred it to Zekrom and then I learned about JustinRPG.

As for favorite Pokemon, honestly I'd have a hard time nailing them down. I was pickier as a kid than now, there's stuff I like about so many of the old mon that I can't really decide now. That said I can't really say the same for any Pokemon past Gen 5, I don't think I even remember liking so much as five Gen 6 or Gen 7 mon.

" It was'nt made for you, let People enjoy, you're old"
I'm seeing that argument a lot, where they will bring up the "old man yells at clouds" line as if depending on your age, and in this case it's the older you are, your opinion means nothing... you know, even though you were around gaming from the beginning and realize WHY it's continuing to shit the bed. It doesn't even have to be about gaming and they will still use this argument.

And i'm sure a new NPC line will be made once this argument fails to work, as they continue to bury their heads in the sand while the rest of us see the writing on the wall for what it is.

mGBA, melonDS, and Citra.

Of course, Citra was taken down as collateral damage when Nintendo took down Yuzu, so you have to find a mirror of it, I think it's on Internet Archive. I know there's at least a couple groups who have technically made Citra forks to continue working on it, but I haven't heard anything about them doing anything substantial.

I'm pretty sure by most metrics you can dig up (polls and fan art numbers) Reshiram is actually the more popular of the two. I know some parts of the franchise kind of pushed Zekrom more (I think it was more prominent than Reshiram in the anime, and it was used as the main character's Pokemon form in that shitty ReBurst manga) because it was the "cooler" of the two, but I imagine people generally liked Reshiram's more graceful fluffy dragon look than Zekrom's kind of weird humanoid dinosaur look.

As one bit of evidence, here's an old Japanese magazine poll for favorite BW Pokemon which has Reshiram in 3rd place and Zekrom in 11th.
