I don't remember ever really struggling with any of the gym leaders minus the fuckin normal one that was weirdly annoying cuz of her mod form lilipup. Scolipede is one of my personal favorites. love that huge centipede man.

It gets worse: The new pokemon were based off the original 151. Sure, they were not 1-1 replicas but many played the same role with a twist or different stats.
These pokemon NEEDED to be just like the ones from Kanto, nothing new will do. Geodude is the only rock type allowed and Zubat is the only bat pokemon allowed, we don't want variety when we can feel the fuzzy wuzzies from nostalgia instead.
The ice cream cone/garbage bag argument is also hilarious on it's own, when you consider that Gen 1 had a pokeball with eyes(evo only flipped it on it's side and added a smiling mouth) and a literal pile of sludge(whose evo is "it just gets bigger and meaner"). Those pokemon are good because they came from Kanto, ice cream bad because it's new.
Kanto shills/genwunners could have their own lolcow thread here, I'm sure enough content could be found to justify it somehow. Definitely one of the worst parts of the community, hands down. Myself, I actually enjoyed what BW2 did by mixing new pokemon with old, but I did respect the hustle of BW1 for forcing you to adapt to newer pokemon. In theory, that SHOULD have replicated someone's very first playthru of red/blue, one where they didn't know what they were doing and were learning everything on the fly, but even better since the game mechanics were much further evolved than they were on the gameboy and had much more nuance. What happened in reality was, and I know I sound like a broken record, genwunners getting mad because the game felt *too* new and unfamiliar, despite the game being mostly the same thing as every other Pokemon game just with different Pokemon. The "radical departures" were minimal but still too big for the target audience to bear.

I can only imagine where the franchise could have been today if nobody took these people seriously and Masuda tried to make XY another Magnum Opus to top BW1. Imagine if the first 3D mainline game was actually optimized, finished and had some thought put into it, rather than just pandering to genwunners and being a bare-minimum technical demo and a base for Z that would never come...well, until now I guess

BW2/Platinum/Emerald deserved better though, it’s tragic how the best games in the series all sold the worst.
When you consider how bad BW were the Sequels not selling made sense. It’s not like they did anything to fix the starters. Heck, even the anime for BW got shit on for resetting Ash hard.

D/P had a lot of issues. I can see why Platinum did not sell well.
Same with R/S and Emerald even if they openly and obviously fixed their base games. Too little to late.

The starters all being kind of bleh hurt BW as well. Let's look at the previous generations:

1.) Charmander wins this one full-stop. A somewhat awkward middle stage doesn't hurt it at all. The Bulbasaur line is kind of nice too and in other generations would win out. The Squirtle line is hurt by Blastoise always feeling out of line with the others, and the Kanto Renewal Project mod gives Totartle which would have been good competition for Zard.

2.) The Cyndaquil line was also the clear winner here - there's a reason Whitney is the brick wall for everyone. The Totodile line is also pretty solid competition, but it's hurt in gen 3 until gen 6 by physical being its main stat and its appearance asks for it to have a part dark type. While I like the Chikorita line aesthetically nobody can deny that Johto in particular is cruel to the line.

3.) This is the first generation where all the starters can have some argument for being best. The Treecko line was admittedly let down by Sceptile not really meshing with the looks of its prevos and an odd movepool that wants it to go mixed, but it gets a lot of help by staying relevant through the whole game (in Sapphire and Emerald). Mudkip's line is also fairly good and when it starts evolving it gets one of the best ingame typings in Water/Ground. It becomes especially good in Ruby thanks to all the fire types around. The Torchic line, despite not having a team it's good against, has a lot to work with. Its weak points in the gym challenge (besides Roxie) all hit late enough that you should have other team members to cover up, and it started the Fire/Fighting meme by being really good with it.

4.) This generation is won so damn hard by the Chimchar line that it's not even funny. Infernape is somehow a better Blaziken and this is a generation that in the vanilla games has a massive lack of fire types. The Turtwig line is a little unfortunate since the Ground type makes it neutral to water types which does rear its ugly head and it overall comes off as a worse Mudkip line, but natural Earthquake is a very nice thing. The Piplup line looks really good and it has a smooth transition into Empoleon (with one of the best typings around) but it has one of the most unfortunate learnsets of all time and it demands TMs and Surf to come into its own.

Generation 5? Aesthically Snivy is a nice line but it is let down by the final evolution being a fast defensive mon with a horrible movepool (there's a reason Blaze Black gives it Contrary and the secondary dragon typing, it needs that much help). Oshawott is hurt badly aesthetically by a really bad looking first stage and its final evolution drops the ball by going to all fours. Its stats and movepool are all kind of average and it would have benefitted from a lot more speed. Tepig is also where the Fire/Fighting typing turned into a hard meme and its stats are just awkward. A lot of HP, higher attacking stats... and poor defenses and speed. This generation has no really good starter that stands out and it hurts it a lot, while every other one had one people could rally behind.

They already soft retconned it with the sun/moon Dex entries making many Mega evos body horror or something that makes the Pokémon go on mindless rampages. Maybe the point of that was to say the power of friendship is so strong Pokémon will endure that for their Trainers, but edgy retcons already have their foundations.
Gen 7 is about when things started to go to shit in my mind, so that about checks out (don't get me started on Lillie)

Basically, all of this.

Gen 5 might be the best overall gen, but it's definitely the gen with the worst starters. Which is a shame because they don't really need much to fix them besides a few stat, typing, and appearance adjustments.

Idk personally I don't mind the edgy grim Pokedex entries. In fact I wish there was more grim and edgy things in pokemon. Like the worm portal that takes you to the post apocalyptic town with the reversed music. Straight out a creepypasta. Same for the ending of SV pure poke pasta territory with actual death. I would not mind them making full on spooky shit either. The whole final fight in PLA against male Cynthia guy was amazing especially when Giritina showed up.

I don't mind the dark stuff but it needs to be well thought out, else it comes off like shitty fanfiction. Like, BW has N being an abused brainwashed child, but he actually grows beyond that and comes out of the story with an expanded view of the world... More recent games just come off more as pointlessly meanspirited in a lot of ways.

I blame whoever decided Eviolite was a good item to add to the series.

Yes, they can easily just not add it to a game, but that single item is, imo, likely the reason why they slowed down on giving older Pokémon new evolutions and pivoted to Regional Forms whenever they want to give a Pokemon a new evolution.
It has nothing to do with Eviolite. The reason new evolution stages don't happen often is because the moment they do that, they have to go back and give a bunch of Pokemon the same treatment. Plus, they have to rebalance the entire game around it. New evolutions carry the same problem as Megas I listed above.

Regional variants are better in every way. Why? Because I can spew them out endlessly and never have to deal with them again if I fucked it up. They buff out the Pokedex, there's no balancing or scaling issues, and most importantly there's no pressure if they suck because I can just do it again.

Eviolite made unviable Pokemon useful and gave previous evolutions some meta use. If anything, they should do MORE items like Eviolite.

I'm talking mostly about Scyther if I'm being honest, and I don't think you'd argue with me that it with eviolite is a bit cracked
Scyther is a special case and it has one of the worst typing combos in the game. There's nothing wrong with Scyther. Scizor gets the benefit of being a Steel type, one of the best types in the game.

It doesn't help in BW2's case specifically that it released in the last year of the DS lifecycle, right before the release of 3DS.
It wasn't just a year, it was only a couple months beforehand.

the fucking GOAT that is Ferrothorn, having fun with Archeops / flying gem / acrobatics nukes. I remember the bridges as transitional set pieces very vividly.
It says a lot that Ferrothorn is still arguably the best Wall in the game to this day.

Archeops while not as great, is still scary. Archen is pretty good in LC due to it's massive base attack stat for a pre-evo.

One big lesson Gamefreak did learn there is that they absolutely could not risk fucking up on the starters because they make the first impression on anyone playing the game. It doesn't matter if the game has Darmanitan as an insane fire type if you set the game down before you get to Lenora. Having Lilligant get insane later thanks to Quiver Dance and Own Tempo Petal Dance on does nothing if you drop the game at Burgh.

Every generation after worked hard to not fuck up starters again. Gen 6 had Fennekin and Froakie for winners (RIP Chespin, your middle stage was horrible). Gen 7 had Rowlet and Litten (though I don't like Incineroar's design). Gen 8 had Scorbunny and the Sobble line, though I do like Rillaboom. Gen 9 has Fuecoco and Sprigatito (Quaxley is ruined by the final evo).

You can mess up in the midgame as DPP shows - even that laughable lategame where Flint only works as a Fire type E4 member in Platinum is a meme because people cared enough about the game to point out how absurd it is. Fuck up the start and people won't be invested enough in it to make it to the end.

I mean he basically was in a cult and actually got his viewpoint challenged. It makes sense he goes from spouting the propaganda he was taught to being a free individual who wants to better the world.

I always love some good old Lillie hatred. You wanna explain your problem with her? I love the character and Alola, but unless its the anime, I never want to see them again.
Still annoyed USUM weren’t sequels with Lillie returning from Kanto and being League Champ.

If there was another time to do direct sequels with you being able to get more stuff it you had save date it was then.

It’s about the one time people were going ‘please sequel’ and unlike BW people liked and bought SM.

BW/2 not landing robbed us of the obvious sequel we should have got.

tfw Smogon cucks and bans the offensive version of Eviolite (probably called Evolatile) within weeks of its release in its debut game.

Pokemon is also one of the few franchises in the world for children that's for the most part, completely untouched by the Woke Mind Virus. So for the parents that do have kids, it's a "safe brand" for now. If Japan ever lets ESG into it's media and it creeps into GF, I promise you Pokemon would virtually die overnight.
In Japan they are.

In the West if you walk into a game store or a big enough place that sells toys Pokemon stuff usually takes up a shelf or two.

And then there is still the anime marketing all the cute stuff.

It also helps that the things people care about are the mons. No one actually cares about the games. Do the mons look like something I want a plush of? Yes. Good game.

SV was made to get some ESG/DEI points from Blackrock and Vanguard. That's why Paldea was an ugly, Brazilian shit hole with some of the ugliest, most unappealing character designs out there (I know Paldea is supposed to be based off Spain or Mexico, but I felt like I was in Brazil aka Hell). Arwen literally gets shit on by everybody including your character for being a guy who cares about his dog and missing parents while the games forces you to feel bad for that Antifa bitch Penny and her faggot friends (she's an unlikable bitch in the very end). I could go on autistic rants about Nemona. It's not as blunt as the other woke/ESG games we've seen, but it's in there. The Japanese were trashing the character designs, and tbh I expect Z-A or this new Switch game to be even uglier than SV. I know they're going to half-ass it.

Oh yea, I noticed they made merch for other generations besides the more popular ones. I'm not gonna lie: the dolls based off Paldea Pokemon are really cute like Greavard.

Piss off. You're reading too much into what's honestly just a bad game. The only soy thing in SV aside from the character customizer crap was the MoistKrit reference and that's only because he's a Soylent laced faggot. Other than that, it presented what I person think is probably the best round of Pokemon in over a decade from a design perspective.

Again, Arwen got pissed on by everybody, and was treated like a dumbass even though he cared about Pokemon and people in his life. Penny was just a spoiled Antifa bitch, but you're supposed to be cool with her and her faggot buddies never mind they exploited and harmed Pokemon like the Fire member. Aside from a few Pokemon like King Gambit, Greavard, and Primape's FYAD Ghost form a lot of the Paldean designs were kinda shitty (Pawmo is discount Pikachu with a 3rd form). It's not my fault the Japanese hated all of the human character designs like the manly female hikers and the Elite 4.

Yea, the Moist shit was really lame as fuck.

My god, I knew SV was shit based on what I'd seen of it but I had no idea it was that bad. I mean you might be making shit up but it sounds so exactly like what GF's been doing since gen 7 (male characters get treated like the scum of the Earth for the slightest of transgressions, female characters (plus Drayton I guess) get to be outright assholes and the audience is somehow gaslit into thinking they're good because muhwaifu) that I have to believe. At least Arven's treated mostly fine in his part of the plot I guess (that's basically the one thing I've seen, lol), but I guess that's just because there was literally no one else there to fuck things up; I knew Penny decided to be an asshole while Arven and Nemona were airing their actual problems during the finale; when else does Arven get shat on? I want to see it so I can get mad and add it to my autistic record file on how GF's writers room needs to be purged with fire.

In SM Gladion does get respect from his sister but he was always kind of an outsider, and his butting heads with Hau was nice. SwSh does have Hop with a rough arc, but it's an arc I honestly like as he surpasses his brother by getting the other Box legend. Bede getting his own little humbling arc is off, but they clearly wanted one jerk rival there. I will say Peony deserves better daughters though.

I still stand by Arven deserving a better game though, and half of the shit with Kieran would have not even happened if his sister hadn't been such an overbearing bitch to him.

The Mochi Madness sequence makes him out to be a clingy bastard which came out of nowhere.
