You get Totem pokemon of your own. While they don't have stat boosts, they're huge and weigh more (impacting moves like Heavy Slam and Grass Knot), and most seem to have their hidden abilities. Gumshoos was given to me in Ultra Sun at level 20 for 20 stickers, which is pretty solid at that point of the game. US and UM both have their own unique totem pokemon to trade for, so its just a fun method of distributing gift pokemon.

Also of note is that the 7 Totem Pokemon that were in the original games(Gumshoos, Alolan Raticate, Lurantis, Salazzle, Vikavolt, Mimikyu, and Kommo-o) can actually be traded to Sun and Moon(Wishiwashi wasn't a gift because the totem one was literally just a normal wishiwashi with an aura, no larger-sized model or anything).

Basically how they decided what abilities they got was simple:

Do they have more than one non-hidden Ability?

If no, they get their normal ability
If Yes, they get their hidden ability

It's to prevent players from changing them around via using the Ability Capsule.

The story is trash yes. Unless they changed some bits (which they did in the Totem fights) I can understand this perfectly.
Meh the story is still much better than most of the other games in the series. Yet again nobody really plays Pokemon for the plot anyways. I still think Gen V had the best balance of story and gameplay though. Plot was good for a Pokemon game while not railroading you so much.

I spent the last 30 minutes trying to SOS chain an Oricorio before taking on Hala before I realized they changed how SOS calls work. Unless you use adrenaline orbs, wild pokemon will now only call for help once (if successful; if not they'll keep calling until an ally shows up and stop calling forever afterwards). I was angry over wasting so much time, the original rate didn't make it that hard to catch pokemon and yet they changed it.

I'm a little disappointed in the pokemon variety so far; all it seems like they did was add 1 new mon per area and add in existing mons to earlier areas. They also made the RotomDex even more annoying by it chiming in every time you find a mon you haven't seen before in the wild.

Also like how the game forces you to do the Mantine Surf tutorial; if you don't follow it, it'll keep repeating the tutorial bits until you do it. And the frame rate drops in the cut scene when you get to Akala and talk to everyone is really bad.

What model of 3DS are you using? Because I'm using a New 3DSXL, and I haven't experienced any drops in framerate so far.

I've been taking Ultra Moon slowly, started off with Jawhn Centa cat this time, though got a female. I just got through the Fire trial, with a Gyarados. Gonna try to hold off on the totem stickers til post-game, so I can just do a collection bumrush for them.

You meet Colress earlier in the game. An indirect meeting in the hotel Lillie's staying at, in one of the 3rd floor rooms. Then after the fire trial, after clearing that tunnel, you get a proper introduction to Colress, who's assisting the UB Recon Squad.

I'm loving some of the new Pokemon added in, including Inkay. Caught a Contrary one early on, which has been brutal with SwagPlay shenanigans, on top of bumming all attempts at lowering stats from the AI.

Certainly not a New 3DSXL, mine's one of these ones.

I'm currently breeding Contrary Fomantis myself before I start doing Akala's trials; Was half tempted to breed for a Natural Cure Comfey, but I think Triage will work fine. I'm also wondering if I should try using a Spinda for giggles since I've never used one before.

I'm currently enacting a smeargle genocide trying to get a growlithe.

Then I'm gonna go get one more thing and complete my coverage.

Sadly, that's the problem. Gen 7 buttfucks the older 3DS models.

I wasn't expecting my copy of Ultra Moon to arrive until the weekend, but it came in today, so it gets to compete with The Punisher for my attention. I just completed the part that's basically the tutorial, and they definitely seem to have shortened it in relation to the originals, which is good. So far, I'm happy with it, but we'll see where things go.

Ehhhh I can see where this is going but I was merely agreeing with Ido about why she quit playing after playing the basic same story again when I know for a fact she doesn't even competitive or anything. I'll still hold my ground on the characters here being mediocre even compared to previous titles.

Bank is open now btw.

I'm still powering through... I just managed to beat the second kahuna last night. I'm having a devil of a time though.

One of my favorite things has been the addition of move tutors early on. As someone who likes to do Nuzlocke runs, the additional moves and easy, early BP access really opens up some fun options for me. There's also so many side quests that I don't remember from the original, like the haunted school or the wandering Vulpix. I feel like Alola has a lot of personality, although I still feel like this game would have been more interesting as a sequel instead of as a 3rd version. I'm mashing through a lot of the cutscenes, but I'm only up to the 3rd island.

Also, I just got my shiny charm last night, woo. So if anyone needs help trading stuff for to complete their dex, send me a pm.

Inkay/Malamar(which is now available on the first island) is pretty good in USUM for Totem battles. Topsy-Turvy reverses the totem stat buffs.

It also works well for the battle with
Ultra Necrozma, who has all of its stats boosted 2 stages, effectively doubling the stats of a Pokemon with a higher stat total than Arceus
You still need give it a way to survive a hit though(Focus sash is the best bet but you'd need to trade with another Gen VII game that's reached the post game, so you'd have to use Focus Band and/or high Affection and pray to the RNG gods.

Also note to anyone Nuzlocking, the above spoilered battle is often a game-ender without the right countermeasures, it can tear apart most level-appropriate teams like paper, it can easily outrun and one-shot many level 100's.

I'm currently at Melemele Meadow. Favorite new feature so far that I haven't seen anyone mention--Wonder Trade not sending you back to Festival Plaza after every single trade.

Good. That got a bit annoying after a while.

The fuck, what level is that spoiler mon at if it can kill lv. 100s in a go? Did they beef up the difficultly level?

It's level 60, has an aura that doubles all of its stats, coverage moves to hit its biggest weaknesses super-effectively, and has a stat total only beaten by Primal Groudon/Kyogre, Mega Mewtwo X/Y, and Mega Rayquaza with a very large bias towards offenses and especially speed. I heard stories of it one-shotting a level 100 Marshadow someone used to test the mechanics of it.

Damn. This is during the main story right?

Looks like I'm gonna need to beef up my team.

I mean, I've not progressed at all, I'm catching everything in every area BUT STILL.
