I wonder how Mustafa Kemal Atatürk would feel about modern day Turkey and the cult around him decades following his death if he was alive today. While I'm sure Atatürk would appreciate that Turkey cherishes him as a leader and his efforts to modernise the country today, he'd defend the right to openly criticise aspects of his legacy or poke fun at him. Like other uses on this forum, I also get the sense that he'd be pretty disgusted with what Erdoğan and the AKP have been doing over the past 20 years.
At least Turkey has some level of both hard and soft power. The Turkish army ranks pretty well in global military strength and Turkey itself is a member of NATO. Turkish dramas and music are quite popular in many Middle Easterrn countries that don't particularly like Turkey. Almost everyone loves Turkish food too. Nobody consumes Bollywood or Indian music except Indians and the Indian army is a laughing stock. I suppose Indian food can be delicious if cooked well but the internet videos of Indian street food vendors have destroyed its reputation. Then again, other NATO members sees Turkey as a poor and unreliable ally. Its neighbours don't like it for historical reasons and its current government sucks. Also like jeets, Turks online are nationalistic keyboards who love Turkey so much that they live abroad. Both Kemalist and Islamists are guilty of spewing ultra-nationalistic talking points from their apartments in Europe. There's an actual branch of the Turkish ultranationalist Grey Wolves in Europe by the way.
Also, how untrustworthy and disliked do you have to be that not even BRICS, the shithole summit, wants you as a member?
